As a student researcher in the Francis Lewis High School Science Research Program, I conducted an independent investigation on the effects of natural compounds on tissue regeneration and behavior in the planarian Dugesia tigrina. Over a 12-week period, I designed and executed a controlled experiment with 100+ planarians across multiple treatment groups, performing daily assessments of eyespot reformation, head and tail tissue regrowth, locomotor activity, and touch responsiveness. I quantified regeneration using a standardized ordinal scale, measured tissue length changes, and analyzed locomotor behavior from 30-minute video recordings. Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA with Tukey's HSD post hoc tests revealed significant regenerative effects at specific time points. I authored a full-length research manuscript with 12 figures and submitted it for peer review. This experience strengthened my skills in experimental design, laboratory technique, statistical analysis, and scientific communication.
