Titanium Matrix Composites are very interesting for aerospace applications. These materials typically present higher Young Modulus and resistance than conventional titanium alloys. The ceramic reinforcement can be continuous or discontinuous (fibers or particles). Main advantages of discontinuously reinforced TMCs are the isotropic mechanical properties and the lower production costs.
This work presents the development of discontinuously reinforced TMCs with TiC as reinforced particles. The reinforcement was obtained by Combustion Synthesis and the final consolidation by Spark Plasma Sintering. Main advantage of this PM process is the short processing time.
Regarding the thermos-mechanical characterization, the material presents higher stiffness and resistance with higher thermal conductivity than conventional Ti-6Al-4V.
This work also presents the scale-up of the SPS process to obtain aerospace demonstrators. Machining and joining issues are also considered.

El tipo de refuerzo puede ser continuo o discontinuo. Normalmente el refuerzo continuo está formado por fibras cerámicas largas y el refuerzo discontinuo por partículas. Las principales ventajas de los materiales con refuerzo discontinuo son que presentan propiedades mecánicas isotrópicas y menores costes de producción que los materiales con refuerzo continuo. </span>

En definitiva, se trata de un procesamiento pulvimetalúrgico, cuya principal ventaja es el reducido tiempo de procesado.</span>

 La densidad de los materiales se midió mediante el método de Arquímedes. La microestructura se caracterizó mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido MEB (microscopio Jeol JSM 5910 LV con EDS Oxford Inca 300). Los ensayos de tracción se realizaron con probetas standard usando la norma ISO 6892-1:2016. El módulo de Young se calculó a partir de la pendiente de los ensayos de tracción. El contenido de oxígeno se midió con un analizador LECO. El coeficiente de expansión térmica se midió por dilatometría y la conductividad térmica mediante Hot Disc (TPS2500 S). La resistencia a la corrosión bajo tensión se midió bajo la norma S-Q-ST-70-37 (ASTM G44-94). Las muestras estuvieron sumergidas en cloruro de sodio bajo tensión durante 30 días.

 La unión de los materiales compuestos a otros materiales también es un aspecto a tener en cuenta. Ciertos procesos de soldadura pueden dañar los refuerzos cerámicos, produciendo el fallo en la unión. En este caso, se ha realizado la unión por braseado del material compuesto a una aleación de Ti-6Al-4V (ver Figura 4). Cómo material de aportacion se empleó una lámina de TiCuNi con un espesor de 100 micras. La temperatura de braseado fue 950ºC. Un sección metalográfica de la union nos muestra una zona de unión homogénea sin la presencia de grietas. Todo parece indicar que el braseado sería una alternativa apropiada para la unión de este tipo de materiales compuestos a otras aleaciones metálicas de titanio.
