This paper proposes a methodology for resource&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;consolidation towards minimizing the power consumption in a&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;large network, with a substantial resource overprovisioning. The&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;focus is on the operation of the core MPLS networks. The&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;proposed approach is based on a software defined networking&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;(SDN) scheme with a reconfigurable centralized controller, which&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;turns off certain network elements. The methodology comprises&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;the process of identifying time periods with lower traffic demand;&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;the ranking of the network elements, based on their utilization&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;and criticality; the rerouting of the traffic off the least utilized&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;elements; and finally, the switching off of the appropriate nodes&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;or links. An algorithm for traffic rerouting, based on the MPLS&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;traffic engineering techniques is proposed and its performance is&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;evaluated in terms of the achieved energy efficiency in&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;accordance with predefined connectivity and quality of service&amp;lt;br/&amp;gt;constraints.&lt;br /&gt;
