La mitología permite a Calderón la construcción de las más intrincadas piezas dramáticas para ser representadas en el Palacio del Buen Retiro. Casi siempre estas fiestas mitológicas no seguían fielmente la historia de los mitos clásicos. Calderón transformaba y manipulaba los argumentos y las acciones para ajustarlas a su interés dramático circunstancial. Así sucede muy claramente en el caso de Los tres mayores prodigios. La pieza recoge los mitos de Hércules, Jasón y Teseo, mezclando las aventuras de los tres héroes para trazar una historia que no exigiese una escenografía tan compleja y arriesgada como la anterior fiesta El mayor encanto, amor. Para este año de 1636, Calderón prefiere centrarse en la historia y la acción y olvidar la compleja escenografía de la fiesta anterior. Con ello, se evitarían los problemas sucedidos en el año 1635 y, además, relegaría la función del escenógrafo Lotti a un segundo plano. La clave de esta interpretación se encuentra en la Loa que introduce la pieza.
The mythology allows Calderón to build the most intricate dramatic pieces to be represented in the Palacio del Buen Retiro.
