<br />
While Internet traffic has received a lot of attention, little is known about enterprise traffic. In this paper, we shed light on the basic characteristics of modern enterprise networks using a 24-hour long packet trace captured in a mid-size academic network. Our approach is to contrast the external and internal activities of the enterprise network under study. We demonstrate that these two types of traffic differ along several dimensions of our analysis, especially traffic composition, symmetry level or RTT. Overall, such a study provides valuable insights for traffic engineering in enterprise networks and could pave the way towards the design of specific workload models for enterprise networks.<br />
