Sustainability meets innovation: Translating circular economy imaginaries at the urban scale.

Ideas of a circular economy are central to the European Green Deal and have become ubiquitous in policy, both at the European and at the national level. First formulated as an improved waste management strategy, the circular economy became the economic growth strategy of the European Commission in 2015. Following the mainstreaming of the circular economy in EU policy, ideas of a circular economy are applied to all sorts of economic sectors and territorial units. The objective of this paper is to assess how the circular economy imaginary is translated and implemented at the urban scale. I follow the approach used by Volker et al (2024), who argue that the process of “implementation” of broad policy concepts is better understood as a process of “translation”. Concepts are understood as emerging from specific configurations of actors and relationships. Translation is the process through which new actors are identified in a different context, relationships and roles are negotiated, so that imported concepts can be adapted to the local context.

Urban areas are “linear” par excellence, as they often function as logistic nodes and as end-of-line consumption of final goods produced in urban and industrial areas. Moreover, European urban and peri-urban areas have suffered a process of de-industrialisation as economies have shifted towards the service sector. Innovation has become a driver of urban development (Zukin 2020), through the establishment of innovation districts, and a driver of economic growth in urban areas. Hence, importing the concept of “circular economy” requires a process of translation. I study this translation through ethnographic research, based on 20 interviews with key actors from public administration (city councils, provincial and regional governments of Catalunya), consultancies, and non-governmental organisations. The geographic coverage includes the cities of Barcelona, of el Vallès area, and of Maresme. The Barcelona region is of particular interest because it is emblematic of the process of deindustrialisation and shift towards the service sector. Barcelona is a leading example of the innovation complex, being the first city worldwide to establish an “innovation district” in Poblenou in the year 2000.

Results show that ideas about the circular economy are translated to the urban context through the logic of innovation. Circular economy policies materialise through (i) the creation of circular economy districts (such as the Circular Park of Mataró-Maresme), aimed at attracting business to urban and peri-urban areas, (ii) the channeling of public funding towards innovation, by favouring pilot projects, start-ups and digitalisation, and (iii) an autarkic turn that aims at re-territorialising industrial activities and that equates sustainability with improved self-sufficiency.

Eutrophication affects 65% of coastal and 53% of freshwater regions in the US but no scalable cyanobacterial degradation methods exist. Piezocatalysis harnesses mechanical energy to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in water, which degrade organic pollutants by oxidation without generating toxic residues. This study designed a novel hydro-turbine using bluff bodies that maximize kinetic flow energy available for aquatic remediation via piezocatalysis. MoS2-doped films exhibited first-order ROS chain reaction production when agitated in Anabaena (20 μg/L), and has potential to inhibit cyanobacterial positive feedback growth by converting nitric products into reactive nitrogen species. The inverted piezo-active flag model was computationally optimized to enhance polarization with turbulent energy and ensure rapid charge dispersion with flow-induced vibrations. The 90° upstream triangle yielded maximum coefficients by effective flow separation (12.6 drag, 18.6 lift) and a flag length ratio of 0.75 was optimal while avoiding canceling zones. The optimized piezocatalytic hydro-turbine design yielded 78% remediation under 800gph for 60s (p=0.032). A minimum flow speed was identified by energy/order to be 0.5m/s, with 0.7W/(1g MoS2). Application depth of 0.3m-2m was identified with cyanobacterial concentration, turbulence needed for crossflow effectiveness, and speed; conditions are within industrial scalability standards. Chain reactions allow the remediation of still-water and high-volume downstream regions through tributaries. In the future, the device can be studied in environments with varying meander speeds and upstream ROS exposure times. The device presents a potential industrial eutrophication treatment applicable in ~93% of fluvial environments.

Generative A.I. Shaping Social Dynamics and Competitive Landscapes: Insights on Augmentation and Automation

The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) marks a pivotal moment in the reconfiguration of economic and social structures. As we observe the early stages of this technological revolution, the potential for generative AI to reshape the dynamics of competitive markets is becoming increasingly apparent. This study proposes a comprehensive exploration of how generative AI is influencing social patterns and transforming the competitive business terrain through its dual capabilities: augmentation and automation.

In March 2023, Geoffrey Hinton, one of the godfathers of Generative AI, when asked what careers younger people should be planning for, gave a one-word answer: plumbing. Hinton's remark hints at the underlying tectonic shifts in labor markets that generative AI could precipitate. This paper endeavors to scrutinize the breadth of generative AI's societal repercussions, particularly in the realms of innovation, job market, and market dynamics.

This paper aims to delve into this impact through an analysis of the dual and mix effects of generative A.I. on tasks: automation, and augmentation, on both output and the job market, considering market elasticities and the creation of novel tasks and expertise.

So far augmentation is the most remarkable effect of generative AI. In fact, we can observe a multiplicative effect resulting on 30%-75% increase in productivity in areas such as programming, together with the creation of new jobs and expertise, such as prompt engineer. There are however many trials directed to automation that promise higher multipliers and transformative effects.

The job market's response to generative AI remains a complex phenomenon. In sectors like software development, where AI tools are widely adopted, there are emergent trends that may offer predictive insights for broader occupational categories. Our research aims to extrapolate these trends to forecast future economic contours.

We anticipate a discourse on the competitive landscapes emerging from the integration of generative AI, emphasizing the potential emergence of power-law distributions within markets. This metamorphosis, driven by AI adoption, poses critical questions about market consolidation and the balance of economic power.

By presenting this analytical framework, our work aspires to shed light on what could be the most profound technological disruption in recent history. It is an exploration of how generative AI is not merely a tool for economic advancement but a catalyst for a comprehensive reimagining of our social and competitive fabric. Through this lens, we aim to contribute to a nuanced understanding of generative AI's role in shaping the future of work, competitiveness, and societal evolution.

Carbon reduction path and economic analysis of seawater desalination in China under the “dual carbon” goal

This paper proposes a self-filling exhaust-type natural vacuum solar distillation system for seawater desalination, which aligns with China’s “green, low-carbon, and efficient” strategy and its “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” goal. The system’s structure and working principle are described, and an experimental apparatus is built to test its water production at different temperatures. The results show that the water production and performance coefficient increase with the water temperature. At a seawater heating mass flow rate of 0.1 kg/s and a temperature of 60℃, the unit cycle water production is 13.77 kg, and the performance factor is 1.80. The paper also analyzes the economic benefits of the system, which aims to improve the desalination speed and rate of seawater, and enhance the wind power generation efficiency.

Robustness plays a relevant role in the capacity of a structure to sustain abnormal loads
or to deal with unexpected events with large effects, such as explosions and terroristic
attacks. Such situations on dams may have extremely large consequences. For buildings,
the design approach that best implements robustness concepts is represented by the so
called “Consequence Based Design”: even if nothing is known about the cause, selective
element removals and extreme load on the structure are modeled, and their effects are
determined with respect to progressive collapse and damage arrest.
In the paper we try to set-up a “Consequence Based Assessment” of a typical example of
a gravity dam built between the ‘30s and ‘40s of the last century in the northwestern
Italian Alps. A simplified model of the structure is adopted. Removal of parts of the dam
cross-section is assumed to occur: the effects of the extent of damage is discussed on the
bases of the tension generated within the body of the dam

Research on the synchronization control of fractional-order complex networks based on switching topology

In the contemporary epoch, bolstered by information technology, the quintessence of networks is ubiquitously manifested, with a plethora of network types—ranging from the Internet, vehicular traffic frameworks, electrical distribution systems, cellular communication matrices, to social interconnection webs—being intricately woven into the fabric of societal functionality and quotidian existence. The domain of complex networks has burgeoned into a fervently pursued research vector, magnetizing an eclectic cohort of investigators from disciplines as variegated as mathematics, biosciences, and engineering. Notably, fractional calculus has eclipsed its integer-order counterpart by offering enhanced precision in the depiction of real-world systems and phenomena. Consequently, the infusion of fractional calculus into the modeling of complex networks, to dissect their dynamic attributes and attendant control paradigms, has crystallized as a research nexus of burgeoning interest, eliciting scholarly discourse at both national and international echelons. [Purpose] This inquiry into the synchronization control of fractional-order complex networks, predicated on switching topology, endeavors to harness said topology as a scaffold for probing the synchronicity inherent within fractional-order complex networks. The objective is to augment the operational efficacy of these networks, broaden their sphere of applicability, and fortify the synchronal linkage amongst fractional-order complex networks and their counterparts. [Method] Predominantly, this exploration is underpinned by a synthesis of bibliographic scrutiny and analytical modeling, employing an extensive compendium of model equations to elucidate the subject matter. The spotlight is cast upon the Caputo fractional-order differential equation, with a focus on assaying the stability traits of its equilibrium junctures and formulating more expansive and pragmatic conditions for stability. In addition, to facilitate the precise estimation of elusive topologies within complex networks, a supplementary network—comprising isolated nodes and a regulatory protocol—is conceptualized. [Results] The findings posit that the investigation into synchronization control, anchored in switching topology, propels the advancement of fractional-order complex networks and holds substantive referential merit. It serves to substantiate, to a certain degree, the postulations of antecedent theorists and chart a trajectory for ensuing scholarly endeavors in cognate domains, thereby perpetually amplifying the pragmatic utility of fractional-order complex networks.

Utilizing BERT for the Detection of Depression in Social Media Messages

Depression is a global mental health issue generalized by a decrease in mood and satisfaction. Treatments for individuals afflicted with depressive symptoms include prescribed medications that require diagnosis to acquire. The purpose of this investigation was to accurately assist psychiatrists in diagnosis procedures to prevent both false positive and false negative conclusions by utilizing machine learning on social media messages. This was done by training a machine learning algorithm which accurately predicted and detected depressive behaviors and communications. As social media messages encompass individual’s general communications among long periods of time with high consistency and frequency, I hypothesized that social media messages could be used as a method to both train an accurate and consistent machine learning model for the detection of depression. Social media dataset messages rely on self-reported diagnoses. Based on F1 accuracy normalization across machine learning HyperTuning, average accuracy indicated 97% [+/-0.5%] among a ~7600 sample dataset. Utilizing generalized sentimental analysis has shown less accurate results (~80%) but needs further research.

Can Plants Learn? – Auditory Conditioned Learning on Cucumis sativus Plants

Previous studies show that plants can recognize and respond to different sounds, such as insect-chewing and running water. Prior research demonstrated that plants can learn and respond to stimuli like touch; it is unclear if plants can have a conditioned response to sound. Our former study found that plants can recognize the sound of stream water (SW) and continue growing throughout drought. Experimentation aimed to investigate if Cucumis sativus plants can grow throughout drought when conditioned to associate non-water sounds to the sound of water. The hypothesis was that cucumber plants would respond to sounds besides SW after auditory conditioning. Some groups were given a training phase (TP) to help them develop an association between their chosen sound and watering session, while others were not given a TP. After the TP was concluded, all groups went into drought stress, while still being exposed to sound. Control groups had no exposure to sound at all. Shoot lengths, leaf lengths, and chlorophyll contents were collected throughout and at the end of the experiment. Overall, groups with rock music (RM) and TP and the sound of water with or without TP had a visible increase in growth, while RM without TP had comparable results to control. Future research will determine if the ability of plants to respond to auditory conditioned learning is altered depending on the time of training relative to the stages of a plant’s life cycle, similarly to a person’s capability to learn and develop at different stages of life.

The new economic security paradigm

For decades, the benefits of expanding international trade and foreign direct investment seemed unquestionable. However, the COVID19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine (and its economic and energy implications for Europe) and the growing geostrategic rivalry between the US and China have been displacing the "neoliberal" paradigm with one that emphasizes the importance of economic security and warns of the dangers associated to the weaponization of interdependence. This article analyzes the implications of this new paradigm for the future of globalization, trade agreements and multilateral trade governance. It focuses, in particular, on how the European Union is attempting to incorporate elements of economic security without adopting protectionist measures, as part of its drive for strategic autonomy.

Salari mínim, productivitat i mercat de treball

Ha passat de 736 € l’any 2018 als 1.134 € l’any 2024.

Construction Project Management and Green Building

'''This thesis studied the definition of a green building and the elements associated with the construction of sustainability. There are many rating systems available across the country both private and public. The most well-known is the LEED rating system developed by the United States Green Building Council. LEED has several rating programs now available. In this thesis, I will discuss why Green Building is more significant than conventional building and methods of Green Building like construction Phases. Conventional buildings produce high amounts of greenhouse gas, a large quantity of construction and demolition debris (which decrease landfill capacity), disturb natural resources, and consume much energy and water. Implementation of various simple and sustainable techniques practiced individually can help in many ways to create an environmentally friendly structure, consume minimal natural resources and at the same time be economical. This paper tries to study the Green Building construction method and innovative technologies that enable us to create a sustainable structure. It also includes design concepts of Green Building, methodology and materials requirements, and ideas and suggestions to create a checklist for a builder to refer to the various suggestions in every phase of construction of a general structure. '''Key Words: '''Green Building, Construction of Sustainability, LEED, Minimal Natural Resources, and Sustainable Structure.

Structural analysis is conducted by the displacement method for evaluation of the stress-strain state induced by static loads. The analysis is conducted by the modal analysis and acceleration response spectrum method for the evaluation of the stress-strain state induced by dynamic loads (including seismic loads).
Structural analysis is carried out using the finite element method. The above method is based on the schematization of the structure into elements connected only at a set number of points called nodes. The nodes are defined by the three Cartesian coordinates in a global reference system. The unknowns of the problem (within the displacement method) are the displacement components of the nodes referred to the global reference system (translations according to X, Y, Z, rotations around X, Y, Z). The solution of the problem is obtained by a system of linear algebraic equations whose known terms consist of the loads acting on the structure appropriately concentrated at the nodes.

ANALYTICAL INTERPRETATION OF HYDRODYNAMIC PRESSURE ON DAMS

Earthquakes pose a significant threat to dams and other reservoir structures. Beyond the ground shaking itself, the dynamic interaction between the earthquake ground motion and the water in the reservoir creates a phenomenon known as hydrodynamic pressure. This pressure can significantly exceed the static hydrostatic pressure that the dam is typically designed to withstand. Understanding and accurately predicting hydrodynamic pressure is crucial for ensuring the safety and stability of dams during seismic events. This paper provides an excursus on the literature present on this topic and delves into the formulation included in the Ministerial Decree of 1982 developing in detailed calculation steps and thus determining in closed form the resultant of the pressures and its point of application.

We present a framework to investigate progressive collapse and robustness of 2D framed structures, subjected to multiple column removals. Progressive collapse is first simulated with an algorithm based on the Discrete Elements. The possible collapse mechanisms emerging from the simulations constitute the input for an analytical model. The model takes into account the dynamics of the response to the sudden initial damage and, under the hypotheses of ideally plastic or perfectly brittle ruptures, provides upper and lower bounds for the collapse loads and for the progressive collapse resistance. Closed form expressions are obtained, that can be valuable for robustness-oriented design. A novel concept of hierarchy in robustness capacity design emerges, which partly conflicts with anti-seismic capacity design. Strategies of compartmentalization and the influence of the position of the initial damage within the frame are discussed, also taking into account the impacts between falling rubble and horizontal floor slabs.

(When) Should a Company Have Purpose?

Organizations in Catalonia and elsewhere are facing mounting pressures to embrace social, environmental, and governance (ESG) goals beyond profit maximization. Yet, these objectives are rarely aligned in ways that create value for shareholders ''and'' society. I use an organizational economics lens and survey recent evidence to answer the question: when should a company have purpose? I focus firms’ ability to attract talent and finance via social activities, contrasting the experiences of smaller, younger organizations and those of larger, established ones. This review does not aim to be comprehensive, but simply to interpret poignant recent evidence. Beyond superior ESG performance’s inherent value, observers often claim purpose enhances productivity by motivating employees. Besley and Ghatak (2005) paved the way for this logic by theoretically showing how workers enjoy working for a firm whose mission matches their social preferences, exerting higher effort and allowing firms to save on monetary rewards. In Burbano’s (2016) field experiment, this is indeed the case: by highlighting corporate social responsibility (CSR), ''large firms'' attract additional workers at lower pay. So long as CSR activities are not too costly, motivated employees can improve organizational performance. Yet, start-up job postings data and experimental data on start-up recruiting reveal this insight does not apply to ''young firms'': espousing a social vision leads job candidates to perceive lower career advancement prospects and rewards (Tarakci and van Balen, 2023). Unless economic performance is strong, purpose is unlikely to attract talent. Even when purpose – pursued alongside profits, as in social enterprises (Baron, 2007; Besley and Ghatak, 2017) – does attract workers, it may induce an undesirable effort allocation. In a multitasking model with motivated workers, the absence of incentives renders mission the only motivation tool and leads social enterprise employees to exert effort on social, rather than commercial tasks (Vladasel et al., 2024). Since this threatens organizational performance, they show that low-powered incentives can redirect employee attention towards commercial tasks and attract additional workers. Yet, this solution is imperfect: prosocial workers experience cognitive dissonance when bonuses encroach upon their moral values, slowing down response times (Vladasel, 2024). If firms value agility, pursuing profits and purpose jointly can prove counterproductive. Finally, while CSR can improve public firms’ ability to raise external finance (Cheng et al., 2014; Hawn et al., 2018) things are different for start-ups that desire to signal their engagement with ESG practices. Popular third-party ESG certification – e.g., ‘B Corp’ – may hinder young firms’ ability to sustain economic performance (Wang and Bansal, 2012; Parker et al., 2019). ESG certification may thus ''lower'' their success in raising finance from traditional and impact investors (van Balen and Vladasel, 2024). Both investor types view certification as beneficial if a start-up has already proven its business model: only then can consumer appeal begin to create economic value. Altogether, young firms should be reluctant to embrace purpose, as reflected in the difficulties associated with attracting talent and funding: not all firms need to be hybrids that maximize shareholder profits while addressing grand societal challenges (McMullen and Warnick, 2016).

Dynamics of Catalan International Trade a Gravity Approach

Since the Middle Ages, Catalonia has been an open nation, keen to trade internationally. In recent decades, the region's commitment to commerce has yielded remarkable growth, with data from the early 1990s revealing a dramatic surge in Catalan international trade. Notably, in 2023 alone, Catalan exports increased by over 6% compared to the previous year.

Over the past 15 years, Catalonia has consistently maintained a positive trade balance, often exceeding 10% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Impressively, exports have emerged as being one of the most important Catalan economic activities, accounting for nearly a third of the nation's GDP in 2023. Such figures clearly outstand, especially when compared with neighboring countries like Spain, France, and the broader European Union.

This paper embarks on a comprehensive examination of the evolution of Catalan trade, focusing on both its primary trading partners and leading sectors in the international market. Utilizing cutting-edge network analysis techniques, the study aims not only to compute informative metrics such as density and connectedness but also to offer clear visualizations of Catalan trade dynamics.

Furthermore, the paper will dive into the determinants of Catalan imports and exports, employing a Structural Gravity approach. This analytical framework deconstructs Catalan trade into three distinct components: Catalan-sector specific, “foreign country”-sector specific, and a bilateral Catalan-“foreign country”. While the former components can be easily retrieved using fixed effects in regression models, the latter, bilateral, component is explained through traditional gravity controls such as distance, Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs), Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs), among others. This bilateral component will shed light on how Catalonia leverages trade and investment agreements to foster international trade.

Moreover, given the interest in the Catalan side, the study will try to unpack the Catalan-sector specific fixed effect by leveraging on firm-level data sourced from Bureau van Dijk’s ORBIS dataset. By aggregating this data to match sector-level specifications, the analysis seeks to explain sector characteristics such as investment intensity, specificity, and competition, and their impact on Catalan trade flows.

Overall, this study aims to, first, provide a detailed description of the evolution of Catalan international trade and, second, explain its main determinants both at a bilateral and at a Catalan level. The research aims to offer valuable insights into the driving forces behind Catalonia's trade performance, thereby informing policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders alike.

This study explores the novel methodology AI-Readiness and Market Dynamics Disruption Index (AIM-DDI) Framework. This framework assesses an organization's preparedness for artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and its capacity to navigate AI-driven market disruptions. AI's rapid evolution has made it a crucial driver of business transformation and competitive edge. However, organizations face challenges in understanding their AI integration readiness and potential AI-driven market disruptions. The AIM-DDI Framework evaluates an organization's internal capabilities, such as AI strategy, infrastructure, talent, implementation, and ethics. Additionally, it examines external market dynamics like customer expectations, competitors' AI maturity, industry disruption potential, regulatory landscape, and AI talent ecosystem. The AIM-DDI Framework offers valuable insights by providing a comprehensive view of an organization's position and potential strategic directions in the AI-driven landscape. We will present the initial survey results validating the framework and demonstrating its practical application and effectiveness in assessing organizational AI readiness. The AIM-DDI Framework is willing to serve as a holistic toolkit for organizations to identify strengths, areas for improvement, and strategies to leverage AI for sustainable competitive success.

Landslide control in the excavation of a shallowly buried tunnel with a large front slope

The tunnel with a large front slope is a common type of entrance in mountain tunnels. Excavation of this type of tunnel disrupts the original balance of the slope, which can easily lead to landslides or collapses. It is therefore important to choose suitable support for early reinforcement. This paper presents a case study of landslide control during the tunnelling of a shallowly buried tunnel with a large front slope. Three types of pre-support, including anti-slide pile, pipe roof and surface grouting, were used to control the landslide. In addition, a three-dimensional analysis was carried out to investigate the reinforcing effect of single and multiple pre-supports on the landslide and tunnel structure. The results showed that the deformation of the landslide and tunnel structure at the end of the entrance was the greatest, that is, the most dangerous. In tunnel structures, the arch area was the most prone to instability, while the bottom area did not experience significant deformation. The horizontal displacement control effect of the landslide body was ranked from strong to weak as surface grouting, pipe roof, and anti-slide pile, while the vertical displacement control effect of the landslide was ranked from strong to weak as pipe roof, surface grouting, and anti-slide pile. The reinforcement effect when three types of pre-supports were applied simultaneously was basically equal to the sum of the reinforcement effects when each pre-support was applied separately. This is mainly due to the different reinforcement mechanisms and areas of the three pre-supports, resulting in better overall effects.

Balancing the load and scheduling the tasks using zebra optimizer in IoT based cloud computing for big-data applications

Task scheduling is one of the major problems with Internet of Things (IoT) cloud computing. The need for cloud storage has skyrocketed due to recent advancements in IoT-based technology. Sophisticated planning approaches are needed to load the IoT services onto cloud resources professionally while meeting application necessities. This is significant because, in order to optimise resource utilisation and reduce waiting times, several procedures must be properly configured on various virtual machines. Because of the diverse nature of IoT, scheduling various IoT application activities in a cloud-based computing architecture can be challenging. Fog cloud computing is projected for the integration of fog besides cloud networks to address these expectations, given the proliferation of IoT sensors and the requirement for fast and dependable information access. Given the complexity of job scheduling, it can be difficult to determine the best course of action, particularly for big data systems. The behaviour of zebras in the wild serves as the primary basis of stimulus for the development of the Zebra Optimisation Algorithm (ZOA), a novel bio-inspired metaheuristic procedure presented in this study. ZOA mimics zebras' feeding habits and their defence mechanisms against predators. Various activities are analysed and processed using an optimised scheduling model based on ZOA to minimise energy expenditures and end-to-end delay. To reduce makespan and increase resource consumption, the technique uses a multi-objective strategy. By using a regional exploratory search strategy, the optimisation algorithm may better utilise data and stays out of local optimisation ruts. The analysis revealed that the suggested ZOA outperformed other well-known algorithms. It was advantageous for big data task scheduling scenarios since it converged more quickly than other techniques. It also produced improvements of 18.43% in several outcomes, including resource utilisation, energy consumption, and make span.

Numerical modeling of progressive damage and failure of tunnels deeply-buried in rock considering the strain-energy-density theory

Exploring the rock failure mechanism from an energy perspective is crucial for ensuring the safe construction of tunnels under complex geological conditions. In this study, a progressive damage and failure model of rock elements is established using the strain-energy-density theory based on the thermodynamic theory. Specifically, the rock elements are considered to have failed when the strain energy density absorbed by the element is greater than the critical strain energy density. Besides, the damage evolution of rock elements is reflected through the reduction of elastic modulus, until the element only has a certain residual strength. Based on the above theory, the calculation program of rock damage and failure is developed in FLAC3D using the FISH language. The validity of the method for simulating the process of rock damage and failure is verified through the numerical simulation of Brazilian splitting tests. Finally, the model was applied to the overload test of the geo-mechanical model of the Liangshui Tunnel on Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway. The comparison between the numerical simulation and the test results has not only confirmed that the feasibility and accuracy of the model in simulating the progressive failure process of tunnel surrounding rock under high ground stress, but also its ability to visually display the damage degree, failure scope and evolution process of the surrounding rock. The research findings are of great significance in ensuring the safe construction of tunnel and will promote the efficient development of the underground engineering construction.

The effects of opening parameters on the bending behavior of fixed open-web steel beams under static loading were experimentally investigated using six specimens of different opening length-to-height ratios, area ratios, and distributions. The experimentally obtained failure modes, bearing capacities, and load-displacement curves of the specimens were compared with those extracted from numerical simulations performed via Abaqus finite element analysis software. The results revealed the following: (i) The typical failure mode of the fixed open-web steel beams was plastic failure at the opening corners in the shear-bending sections, with compressive corners experiencing flexion and tensile corners experiencing tearing. (ii) For a given opening area ratio and opening height-to-beam height ratios, decreasing the opening length and increasing the number of openings significantly increased the bearing capacity of the open-web beam (by more than one-fold) when the openings were appropriately configured, compared with beams with a small number of large openings. (iii) Increasing the opening height and length had similar effects on the bending behavior of the open-web beam.

A fully distributed algorithm for dynamic economic dispatch of cross regional power systems based on alternating direction multiplier method

In the present study, a novel approach to dynamic economic dispatch for power systems spanning multiple regions is introduced, utilizing the alternating direction multiplier method (ADMM) as its computational foundation. The proposed economic scheduling model is designed to optimize the operational costs of the system comprehensively, while adhering to a spectrum of operational constraints. Employing the ADMM, the study achieves a distributed resolution of the model by severing the inter-regional interconnections, thereby partitioning the overarching optimization challenge into manageable sub-problems specific to each region. This methodology facilitates the attainment of the system’s global optimum through the iterative resolution of these regional sub-problems. Furthermore, the algorithm obviates the necessity for a centralized data repository for multiplier updates, thereby endorsing a fully distributed scheduling paradigm. Concurrently, the study incorporates a multi-period optimization technique within the economic scheduling model to accommodate the inherent temporal dependencies of the power system. The culmination of this research is the empirical analysis of a tri-regional interconnected system, predicated on the IEEE standard test system, which substantiates the efficacy of the proposed economic dispatch strategy.

Research on the influence and characteristics of ocean waves on the stability of near-surface UUVs

Existing experimental methods or traditional numerical methods struggled to separate the resistance caused by a vessel's movement and the impact of waves. However, the impact of waves significantly affected the stability and safety of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs). To summarize the influence of different attitudes and sea conditions on ocean wave impact, this work first proposed a method to separate the influence of ocean waves. This method used the unsteady finite volume method to analyze the forces on the vehicle in both wave and calm water environments. It also employed a separation formula to isolate the wave impact based on a separation equation. Then, this work selected a specific UUV as the research subject and applied this method to separate the wave impact under various attitudes and sea conditions. The results were then reconstructed. Finally, the effects of various factors on wave impact were summarized, including wave height, wave period, pitch angle, heading angle, velocity, and diving depth.

'ADVANCEMENTS IN HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT TECHNIQUES FOR HEAT SINK AND RELATED DESIGN METHODS: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW'

The effective dispersal of thermal energy from mechanical and electronic devices is a critical function of heat sinks, especially in the dynamic electronic industry. The convergence of rising power efficiency and the need for miniaturization has underscored the significance of creating heat sink configurations that are not only efficient but also capable of maintaining performance without necessitating expansion. This review article provides an exhaustive examination of recent developments in heat transfer enhancing methods, with a specific emphasis on a range of heat sink configurations and design approaches. Thermal efficiency expressed as a pin termination circular and pin fin square is assessed in the present research, Pin Fin Elliptical, and Channel Heat Sink designs. Comparative results indicate that Pin Fin Circular exhibits good performance, while Pin Fin Elliptical shows better results. The numerical analysis includes considerations of thermal performance, surface area, manufacturing complexity, and 2D models. Pin Fin Circular, with its efficient heat dissipation and moderate complexity, emerges as a promising option. The paper evaluates the applicability of additional manufacturing processes, including EDM, etching, casting, extrusion, and machining, for prototyping and mass production. A detailed investigation of manufacturing methods shows that, contingent upon the method used, Pin and Channel designs possess unique merits and demerits. In addition, the study emphasises the importance of cost aspects during the design process. Also, the assessment examines the current status and potential future advancements of heat sink technology, placing particular emphasis on the necessity for unique designs, materials, and versatile manufacturing methods. The incorporation of Nano fluids technology and the exploration of structural design perspectives are identified as potential avenues for future research. This work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent developments in heat sink technology, offering insights into thermal performance enhancement and guiding future studies in this critical field.

The theoretical model of bobbin tool friction stir welding (BT-FSW) structure and dynamic process is established. Because of the great differences in properties of different materials, the mathematical relationship between material stress and deformation will be expressed based on 3D transient heat conduction equation and J-C constitutive model. The BT-FSW process of 7075 and AZ31B was analyzed by finite element method, and the field distribution, thermal cycle curve and stress distribution characteristics of different welding areas of the welded material were simulated. To predict and control the non-equilibrium distribution of welding temperature and stress field, the influences of different Rotating speed, welding speed, offset and other variables on the BT-FSW process of 7075/AZ31B aluminum magnesium dissimilar alloy were studied comprehensively. Finally, the reliability of the model is proved by fitting the experimental and numerical analysis results. The research results show that the temperature of BT-FSW presents an “hourglass” symmetrical distribution, and the stress distribution on both sides of the plate is uniform when the aluminum alloy is placed on the advancing side, the stirring tool is offset to the aluminum alloy by 2mm, and the rotating speed and welding speed are 700r/min and 180mm/min, respectively.

The structural nonlinear aeroelastic analysis of folding wings is conducted by integrating the modified Doublet Lattice Method in this paper. Firstly, a modified Doublet Lattice Method is investigated to relax the aspect ratio limitation of aerodynamic elements, and its correctness is verified through numerical examples. Secondly, the rational function approximation method is discussed, and the modified Doublet Lattice Method is approximated using the minimum state method to obtain the unsteady aerodynamic forces in the time domain. Finally, the aeroelastic characteristics of a folding wing with free-play and friction nonlinearity are studied by integrating time-domain unsteady aerodynamics with the nonlinear structural dynamics model. The results show that the modified Doublet Lattice Method, which relaxes the aspect ratio limitation of aerodynamic grid elements, is feasible and effective; Friction can suppress the influence of free-play nonlinearity on aeroelastic response.

Design and structural analysis for a camber-morphing wing with deformable truss

A camber-morphing wing based on a deformable truss is proposed in this paper. And then the structural analysis of the proposed camber-morphing wing is achieved. Compared with the existing concept of camber-morphing wings, the deformation mode of this wing is easier to manufacture and implement in engineering. Due to the fact that the wing is driven by multiple motors, it has the characteristic of multiple degrees of freedom in camber-morphing, which can achieve various deformation controls. Establishing corresponding finite element models, the deformation ability under different driving conditions is simulated. The results indicate that compared with driving short metal wires, driving long metal wires results in a greater degree of trailing edge deflection due to a greater driving force. Based on finite element analysis of deformation capability, the camber-morphing wing exhibits satisfactory deformation capability. Furthermore, based on the analysis of load-bearing capacity, it is indicated that the camber-morphing wing has sufficient load-bearing capacity.
