Gender representation in Spanish prime-time TV series (2017-2018)

This research analyses the current state of gender representation in Spanish prime time television series broadcast by the main generalist channels. For this purpose, an analysis of the content of 21 television series produced in Spain in the second half of 2017 and 2018, of 514 characters (n = 514), has been carried out in order to determine whether there is an unequal representation of male, female and non-binary characters. The main findings indicate that there is an under-representation of women; non-heterosexual sexual orientations are under-represented, as are non-traditional gender identities; women continue to be associated with less qualified professional occupations and, in particular, with domestic work; there is a statistically significant relationship between female characters and less ambitious, more personal work objectives and personalities associated with the world of emotions and motherhood. However, no statistical link was found between gender and narrative weight, gender and hypersexualization, or gender and violence.

Public relations ethics. A comparative study of the professional codes of conduct in Spain and Portugal and the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management code

Deontological codes are a moral reflection centered on the duties and rights of a profession, which set the minimum moral standards required for its activity and which function as a self-regulating mechanism of professional praxis. This article analyzes the Public Relations codes of ethics of the public relations professional associations of Portugal and Spain to understand the common values that guide this activity. The purpose of the research was twofold: 1) to describe comparatively the public relations codes of ethics in force in the professional associations of two countries - Portugal and Spain; 2) to analyze and compare these codes following the global principles of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management. Through a qualitative comparative content analysis, guided by the Global Alliance’s 16 global principles, 7 core values were identified: (1) Working for the public interest; (2) Honesty, truth and fact-based communication; (3) Integrity; (4) Transparency; (5) Deal with the public with fairness and respect; (6) Behave in such a way as to magnify the profession; and (7) Act with professionalism. Although there are nuances in the regulatory framework of the local professional associations, there are global principles of practice that stand out and demonstrate the possibility of a global code of ethics for public relations.

In the context of the socioeconomic crisis of recent years in Spain, in which NGOs and social movements have had to face significant communication challenges and opportunities, this paper analyzes the case of Las Kellys, the organization of hotel maids created in 2016, which has used storytelling in its Public Relations actions with the media to successfully transfer to society its claims to improve its labor rights. A qualitative and quantitative methodology has been combined to evaluate the communication tools used and the impact of their actions, making useful contributions to maximize the communicative effectiveness of other organizations, especially NGOs, through first person narratives, with a close and colloquial language full of authenticity.

Journalists and Public Relations professionals: from influence and dependence to journalistic disintermediations

Relations between journalists and Public Relations professionals have been the subject of various investigations. In a context in which great precariousness in the media coincides with an increase and professionalization of communication agencies, we propose to study their informational relations. Our objective is to determine the perceptions of journalists and Public Relations professionals regarding their work and profession, identify how the influences between these two groups of professionals are established, and evaluate their routines and interactions. This research has been carried out using the qualitative discussion group technique (n = 43). Among the results, the media’s weakness stands out in the face of Public Relations that is experiencing a golden age, capable of exercising not only a relationship of influence that fits with the “determination model” but also aspiring to journalistic disintermediation.

Internal communication and happiness and wellbeing management in Spanish companies

The management of internal communication in organizations has undergone extensive development in recent years through the use of various tools, many of them associated with technological advances. However, in many organizations, it continues to be linked to human resources departments, based on the understanding that it is linked to the relationship with workers. In this context, characterized by the tendency to promote the experience of employees in order to increase their involvement and enable management change, the concepts of staff happiness and well-being have been introduced into organizations. This work delves into the relationship between internal communication and the happiness and well-being of employees using a questionnaire completed by internal communication managers in 82 Spanish companies that have been recognized for their actions in this area by the Great Place to Work consultancy firm and by the Internal Communication Observatory. The results indicate that the link between happiness and internal communication is strong, despite the fact that happiness management is implemented very little in Spanish organizations and in most cases is the responsibility of human resources. In Spain, the term most commonly used to designate this position is that of Wellbeing Director, followed by that of Happiness Director and less so Chief happiness officer, as occurs in other countries.

Half a century in the evolution of the Concept of public relations (1970-2020). Review article

This review article offers an exhaustive epistemological work on the evolution of the concept of public relations during the last half century (1970-2020). For this purpose, the most referred definitions from the academy, manuals, books and scientific articles focused on public relations have been explored and summarized. The objective is to verify how the concept of public relations has evolved and how it has been modeled with the successive definitions set forth by experts, academics and researchers. Thus, as in the decade of the seventies of the 20th century, despite the clear dissent on the conception of public relations, which goes from organized effort to art or social science, there is already a common recognition of its nature persuasive and its foundation in the social sciences. In the 1980s, public relations, influenced by business management, are identified as a managerial and directive function of communication. And, starting in the 1990s, socially responsible public relations are moving towards goals of mutual understanding with the public. The latest definitions that reaffirm the managerial nature, coexist with others that conceive them as a strategic communication process. The study confirms its managerial nature, in its objectives of mutual benefit and mutual understanding between the organization and its public, along with its socially responsible nature. It is therefore finally a concept away from the commercial and economic objectives of marketing, with which it is sometimes mistakenly confused. Finally, in the conclusions, this article considers the defining elements of current public relations.

The degree of maturity in the digital transformation of the Public Relations and Communication agencies that were associated with the Spanish Association of Communication Directors-Dircom is analyzed. The model for digital transformation proposed by Westerman; Bonnet; McAfee (2012; 2014), based on the vectors of leadership and digital capacity is applied. For this purpose, a questionnaire was sent to those responsible of this type of agencies. Our results identify that 75% of the Public Relations and Communication agencies are at an advanced stage of this transformation, conditioning the demand for new profiles, the reorganization of work and the offer of new services. 80% of these agencies have an integral vision of digital communication, although they recognize that they must automate many of their processes.

Grounded in the framework of the relationship management theory, this study examined the effects of employees’ perceived transparent communication on their relational trust and satisfaction with their organization and how the relational perceptions influenced their information sharing on social media in problematic situations. This study conducted a national survey of 449 employees working for large organizations in the United States. It found that employees’ transparent communication with their organization positively influenced their relational satisfaction and trust. Employees who trusted their organization were more likely to share positive information about organizational problems on social media. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.

Dialogue between organizations and publics in the digital era: the “unfulfilled promise” of new media and the consultancy discourse in Spain

The expansion of digital communication technologies has been accompanied by the development of a “dialogical theory” of Public Relations, a theory that saw in new media the potential to implement ethical principles about dialogue to communications between organizations and publics. This article studies the current situation of the subject from two points of view: a critical literature review and discourse analysis of the 40 largest public relations consulting companies in Spain. As a result of the first component, “the unfulfilled promise” of the new media is highlighted. The analysis of the consulting discourse, on the other hand, shows the preference given to conversation and engagement as alternative concepts, the persistence of the discursive connection between digital technology and dialogic processes, as well as the existence of three basic forms this connection assumes. Theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed.

Digital transformation in the advertising industry from a gender perspective: an analysis of the top agencies

This research departs from the strategies debated in an international framework for the achievement of gender equality through digitization and education, focusing in particular on the advertising industry. The advertising sector is immersed in a process of technological transformation that is precipitating substantial changes in companies, viz. advertising and media agencies, which are now demanding new professional profiles and adjusting traditional ones to the new media ecosystem. At the same time, and despite the feminization of the studies and workforce in this field, there is an unequal vertical and horizontal distribution by sex in Spanish agencies. Despite the previous evidence on the implications of the digital transformation for the work processes of agencies, no studies have explored this aspect from a gender perspective in Spain. In this context, this study investigates the roles and services of the leading agencies in the advertising industry more deeply, with the aim of evaluating both the digitization process and tasks close to R+D+I, and the roles of women therein. The results reveal parity in the sector and that the Digital and R+D+I areas play a central role in the agencies. There are no significant differences by sex, either in Digital profiles or in the area related to R+D+I, but women occupy fewer positions on management boards and in the Creative area. In short, this study provides evidence regarding the professional reality in the advertising sector, in order to delineate actions in the educational field to respond to the needs of the economy and society in line with the gender equality project.

Influence of gender in electoral debates in Spain: Analysis of the social audience in #ElDebateDecisivo and #L6Neldebate

Television debates during electoral campaigns constitute a central element within the political communication sphere. This research examines the digital conversation on Twitter on the broadcast of two television debates during the general elections campaign in Spain in April 2019: #ElDebateDecisivo of Atresmedia (among male presidential candidates) and #L6Neldebate of La Sexta (among female political candidates). The research provides a renovated perspective regarding the progressive feminisation of politics, establishing a correlation among key variables, such as the gender of the political leaders participating in the debates, the role of television as the main means during elections, and the influence of the public interaction on Twitter. Methodologically, the study pays attention to 313,343 impacts generated by 101,510 users or nodes. As pointed out in the conclusions, in the masculine debate (#ElDebateDecisivo) the active audience’s contribution to the public and political debate is defined in a more banal way, in contrast with the women’s debate (#L6Neldebate), in which a more political consciousness is perceived.

The political agenda in the Spanish election of April 2019: Electoral programs, Twitter, and electoral debates

The series of issues for debate which our public representatives consider important is normally referred to as the “political agenda”. This agenda, when compared to the priorities of the media (“media agenda”) and those of the general public (“public” and “private” agendas), is much more difficult to measure. This article uses a methodology to ascertain the thematic break-down of the political agenda based on the analysis of three different scenarios of political communication during the Spanish general elections held in April 2019: the electoral programs of the parties, the use of Twitter and electoral debates. This contribution uses the methodology of content analysis to study the agenda of the main issues in the electoral programs and televised debates in addition to how politicians used the social network Twitter to deal with the agenda issues.

Through a mixed method, the linear (live), social (social media) and audience participation (live-tweeting) offer during the special information program of March, 26th 2019 electoral night in La 1 of TVE and La sexta is analysed. We had the hypothesis that television consumption has changed with the competition of VoD-OTT platforms. The objective of this empirical work is to determine the multichannel information strategy carried out by the mentioned stations, and to know the response of the audience. Political events such as electoral processes keep the audience connected to traditional and social television, and generate high volumes of conversation.

Television and social media: Social audiences in the advertising strategy

The social audience emerges with the simultaneous exposure to television and social networks. Through them the audience voices its opinions or interests about the contents in real time. This information is of great value for the advertising strategy. By analyzing the presence of social audiences in the most effective commercial communication campaigns, this study makes evident the common elements and variables used by them. The 23 campaigns awarded in the Efficacy Awards, granted by the Asociación Española de Anunciantes, in the category of media and tactical action, from 2014 to 2018 are examined. Social conversation is detected in 15 cases, although only four campaigns link television content to social media, including social audience in their public strategies. Accordingly, the use of the social audience is scarce but a favorable progression in the strategies is observed, since they gain in transmediality and agents’ participation. Engagement is pursued and branded content, gamification or multiplication of official transmitters is used. The latest cases reveal how they take advantage of these audiences.

Time-shifted audience of electoral debates: an exception of the informative genre

The possibility of watching time-shifted TV shows has transformed the measurement of audiences. This why since 2015 the visualizations of programs have been recorded from the first minute of their broadcast up to seven days later. In this research, we analyze the characteristics and evolution of the debates time-shifted audience of the Spanish and European elections of 2019 and we will compare them with those of other informative tv shows and with the fiction and entertainment genres. According to methodology, we use audience data collected with Infosys software during the last two months of both election periods and we also interview experts. Results show that, in relative aspects, the time-shifted audience of debates only increased by 2.90%, but in absolute terms, the increase was greater than other genres during the analyzed period because they are events of great interest where the conflict and confrontation made them lead also on traditional linear television. Therefore, we conclude that the debates time-shifted audience is an exception in informative tv shows, which usually are ranked in the last place compared to other genres. In addition, we observe a progressive erosion of the number of viewers and their distribution in the seven days after the broadcast, due to proximity of the Spanish and European elections. We also detect a predominance of the vosdal audience (viewing on same day as live), which is explained by the important relation between debates and current affairs.

In recent years, areas within Spanish television mix information with entertainment have proliferated with much variety by using real television. This has caused many areas to call themselves reporting programmes and/or documentaries, which in fact are full of elements of which should have an informative purpose but sadly entertainment comes first. The objective of this study is to observe to what extent this hybridization of information and entertainment in modern Spanish reporting. In order to do this, a qualitative analysis must be carried out on three formats of success within their respective channels –Comando Actualidad (TVE-1), En el punto de mira (Cuatro) and Enviado Especial (La sexta)– over a period of two seasons. After the analysis it can be concluded that in the case studies and contrary to popular belief, the information is placed ahead of entertainment in terms of its importance.

Spanish general election 2019 on Twitter: effectiveness of communicative strategies and televised debates as an engine of social discourse

This research analyzes candidates and political parties electoral campaign on Twitter that have obtained greater parliamentary representation in the general elections held in April 2019 in Spain. The main objective of this work is to analyze the influence of the electoral debates in the publications of the candidates and political parties on Twitter, to find out if they have a greater impact and enhance social discourse. We also aim to determine what type of messages and strategies have greatest impact on Twitter. The methodology used to achieve these goals was a quantitative, qualitative, explanatory and cross-sectional content analysis. To carry it out, a sample composed by 745 tweets was selected from those that reached more than 500 retweets, published by parties (PSOE, PP, Ciudadanos, Unidos Podemos and Vox) and candidates (Pedro Sánchez, Pablo Casado, Albert Rivera, Pablo Iglesias and Santiago Abascal) during the election campaign (21A).The results suggest that televised debates act as true catalysts for social conversation, so the publications made by both, the parties and the candidates themselves, during the television broadcast of these events achieve a greater impact among followers, than those that are not linked to such events. Likewise, it is demonstrated that parties and candidates born in the heyday of social media, get a greater diffusion of their messages, because they have optimized their strategies in social networks, something that have not yet been achieved by the formations accustomed to conventional mass media.

A taxonomy design for mobile applications in the Spanish political communication context

The new mobile ecosystem that now defines the so-called mobile society and the mobile culture is already a key territory for contemporary political communication. Within this culture, mobile applications have become a common ground for the meeting between organisations and citizens interested in participating in political matters through the direct experience that these platforms allow. Despite this development, it is difficult to find a complete and reliable taxonomy of apps in the academic or professional literature that analyses how these relationships impact the field of political communication. This study tries to address this gap, introducing the first systematic taxonomy of political communication apps in Spain based on the development of a self-produced taxonomical model that gathers in detail all the variables required to understand the nature of these applications that are available for any smartphone. This rigorous taxonomy comprises political communication applications available at the main app stores (about 316 found in Play Store and App Store). Specifically, the methodological classification was elaborated based on the following categories: promoter agent, app objective, level of interaction, level of autonomy and predominant tone. A very complete picture was obtained from the empirical analysis, which defines and explains the landscape of political communication applications for mobile devices in Spain.

Plan S promotes that all articles from research funded by public financing agencies that subscribe it, have to be publicly available immediately, either in open access journals or in repositories that meet certain conditions, as of January 2021. Plan S has been promoted by Science Europe, a group of public research funding agencies through the cOAlition S, and has published two versions that have generated intense academic debate worldwide. Even though no public or private research agency of Spain has been committed at the moment to support Plan S, it is interesting to assess how this Plan can affect the ecosystem of Spanish scientific journals. We present the results of the analysis of the Spanish journals of SCImago Journal Rank in Social Sciences and the compliance that they have with the requirements that cOAlition S has described for the journals to be considered of Open Access of quality. These requirements are related to the opening of the content, the payment model, technical aspects and copyright. It is concluded that although most journals meet the requirements related to open content, they are left with challenges related to the technical aspects of maximum interoperability and reuse. Journals are recommended to take the Plan S as an opportunity and take advantage to carry out a full digital transformation.

A new analysis system for website quality evaluation is presented. It is characterized by its potential to interrelate and evaluate both technical and strategic aspects of a website. It has its origin in the premise that, although the technical aspects, which determine the website operability and functionality, have a great impact on its quality, they do not alone guarantee success. This approach differs from those commonly adopted by analysis systems for website quality evaluation, since most of them have been developed adopting a predominantly operational or functional approach.

The responsibility of the media for suicide prevention. News treatment in the Spanish media

Suicide has traditionally been silenced by media, following experts recommendations pointing to a possible induction of imitative behaviour in the population. However, this position has recently changed and psychologists and psychiatrists, in addition to the World Health Organization (WHO), request the media to rise awareness about this serious social problem aiming to fight it. Every year, more than 800,000 people commit suicide in the world, which means that one person dies every 40 seconds. Therefore, we depart from a new and apparently agreed upon approach: we must inform. This position being accepted, it is very important to define the limits and the terms. Bibliography on this topic is scarce, only existing one self-regulation reference written by health professionals and journalists in Spain (2018). The aim of this research is to analyze the information on suicide published on the first five months of 2019 by the two main general newspapers in Spain by applying the Code of Ethics on the Treatment of Suicide in the Media promoted by the Association of Journalists of the Balearic Islands. The results show an improvable practice as well as concurring errors remediable to satisfy the demands of organizations, family members and victims by means of responsible and useful journalism.

Communicating public administration budget data through visualization software: Use of the tool ‘Where does my taxes go’

Budget visualization tools facilitate the communication of complex technical information. In this paper, we analyse the main technical, individual and organizational factors that affect its implementation and use. Through a questionnaire survey we have collected data from those responsible for the web application “Dónde van mis impuestos” (“Where do my taxes go?”) in 23 Spanish regional and local governments. Our findings show that these tools have a small number of users but that their main target are not citizens but specific groups, mainly media and political groups. Its adoption is neither a budgetary nor technological problem, although the free software license gives clear advantages. The impulse for adoption is mainly political with the main focus on financial and budgetary transparency but sometimes also on participatory transparency or microtransparency. Finally, we detect a serious risk of governance generated by the lack of clear transparency and accountability strategies in the administrations, as well as an absence of operational procedures to adapt to the changing budgetary structure.

Influence of journalistic and business values on the reputation of the media in Spain

The study of reputation, applied to different objects (companies, territories, institutions…) has gained relevance in the last years, as it can be seen from the increasing volume of scientific papers dealing with the subject. This paper analyzes the corporate reputation of media enterprises (press, radio and television), providing for the first time an empirical evidence about the canonical values on which the media reputation depends. Likewise, the variables in which the values are disaggregated and which qualitatively and quantitatively define this dependency are analyzed. Thanks to the multivariate analysis of the results of a survey conducted in Spain among more than a hundred professionals and managers who work for a sample of media, it has been possible to establish that the journalistic or professional values account for approximately three quarters of their reputation and that the rest corresponds to the second of the canonical values of the media reputation: the business values.

Technological convergence has affected the media context of generalist television, modifying access and the consumption of content. The design of the scheduling of the general-interest linear television is a key element in understanding the policies that the operators follow when offering genres and formats, and in observing the similarities and differences between public and private ownership. This article analyses the television schedules of 25 generalist channels, public and commercial, operating in Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Some of the findings of this investigation show a) little diversity of genres, b) that the editorial policy of public broadcasters clearly differentiates them from private ones by prioritizing informational offerings, national fiction, and documentary info-shows, and c) strategic differences of genres by ownership in each country.

This paper is positioned at the intersection between the concepts of informed audiences, media literacy, and television content ratings. It begins with a definition of the first two concepts, followed by a consideration of ratings as a mechanism at the service of both. An analysis is offered of the most notable international initiatives (Australia, USA, UK, and The Netherlands), as well as the Spanish case and its associated actions. Rating procedures are necessary mechanisms to facilitate well-informed viewing decisions by TV audiences, especially in the case of children’s programming. This article proposes recommendations in relation to the implementation of the European audiovisual media services directive, including the use of a wide range of pictograms to identify types of content.

Once open data initiatives are consolidated worldwide, it is important to find out if the Spanish regional open data portals are useful for active transparency. To this end, we developed an indicator to assess the existence of information and its reusable quality in three periods of time (2013, 2015 and 2018). Then, we inquired about the existence of differentiated groups of regional governments using, when necessary, cluster analysis. We found indications that there are two conglomerates of governments: advanced and lagged. These findings are in line with those offered by two opposing views on the dissemination of information from the public sector: agency and neo-institutional theories.

Tourist information sources at different stages of the travel experience

Tourist destination managers must design effective communication strategies as part of their promotional tasks. In order to do so, destinations need to know what sources of information tourists actually use during the stages of a trip. Previous studies have partially addressed this issue but only used a limited list of sources analysed or only focused on three stages (pre-, during and post-). Our study considers a fourth stage –destination choice–, and also 27 sources of information were included in the questionnaires sent to our sample of analysis composed of 1,621 tourists from the four main countries visiting Spain: France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. The results confirm the prevalence of Internet search engines for destination choice and trip preparation phases, but also point out to the importance of recommendations from friends and family in the destination choice stage, of maps and plans during the trip, and of Facebook in the post-trip stage. It is also shown that, among the official channels of the destinations, only the website stands out as one of the most consulted sources.

The instability in the newspaper business model since the emergence of the Internet disrupted the value chain and has led newspapers to turn to videos as an additional source of revenue. YouTube has become the content distribution channel of choice for most newspapers, which benefit from the ability to generate greater traffic in exchange for a blind contract imposed by YouTube’s algorithm. Advertising income from this source is still scarce and depends on engagement, previous user experience, video quality, video reputation and numerous other factors. Based on an analysis of 864 videos over three randomly selected weeks, conclusions are reached, and the consequences of the management of the YouTube channels of six Spanish newspapers are discussed.

The perception that exists in the professional and academic sector about the use of artificial intelligence in journalism is analyzed. The work has been developed over eleven months through interviews with heads of innovation from several national media (N=10) and university professors (N=10) and questionnaires to journalists (N=251) and students of Journalism and Audiovisual Communication (N=194). The results show a coincidence in both discourses in that this technology will not have a negative impact on the journalistic labor market. There is also a consensus that the quality of automated news presents some important shortcomings, as well as the need to bet on a solid training of journalists that integrates the use of emerging technologies.

International power structures present a pattern of transition, where the United States is no longer able to consolidate its power globally. The slogans of Donald Trump: “Make America great again” or “America first” are an example of the media interest of the American president in that his electors think that it’s possible to gain the lost hegemony. This article examines Donald Trump’s bilateral encounters with politicians Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel, Shinzō Abe, Theresa May, Justin Trudeau, Giuseppe Conte, and Jean-Claude Juncker. Meetings marked by extravagant greetings and politically out of place behaviors that seem more like a reality show than a bilateral encounter between political leaders. Using data results from Google Trends platform, we study the resonance of the meetings between Donald Trump and the heads of state of the G7 countries to examine the variations in Trump’s popularity after these meetings.

The consumption of news has become a social experience. In this scenario, we set out to answer the following question: What are Spanish journalists talking about on Twitter? This work studies what type of content they emit on Twitter to establish if the link between these professionals and the mass media or with the cybermedia influences the thematic orientation of their tweet. The study has worked with three samples (a sample of covers of five newspapers of reference of Spain, a sample of ten accounts of Twitter corresponding to journalists from mass communication media and a sample of ten accounts of cyberjournalists). The two-year research has analyzed 3.500 tweets based on a classification system of registration units made up of 35 thematic categories. The study concludes, among other aspects, that politics (national and international) is the great theme of Twitter along with a growing concern for jihadist terrorism and issues of the Ibero-American context over Europe. The work also warns of the existence of thematic gaps in certain areas (such as society, culture, art or science). In addition, an increasing tendency of the use of the platform for the purpose of self-promotion by journalists is detected.

This article presents the results of a study on the existence of glass ceilings in advertising agencies and advertising departments of advertisers in Spain; and quantified through content analysis those responsible for the campaigns awarded in the Commercial Communication Effectiveness Awards 2002-2018. The results indicate a greater female presence in accounts, planning and advertisers, while creativity remains under masculine control. A ceiling persists that prevents females from occupying positions of power in the advertising industry, with the smaller gap in the advertising departments of the advertiser than in agencies and, within these, in contact and planning departments. The main contribution lies in obtaining data from the Spanish context on departments other than creative, and in the auspicious context for the change that opens the extension of the feminist movements in the second decade of the 21st century.

Nowadays, the emerging discipline of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) has great acceptance among the scientific community in general. Nevertheless, its presence in social sciences has not reached the development obtained in other disciplines. Studies describing RRI application to areas such as business, and more specifically, corporate communication, are scarce. The objective of this study is to show the possible application of the principles of the emerging RRI discipline to business and corporate communication, as well as the main barriers and benefits that could arise. For this, we provide a documentary review of the existing literature and an analysis of fifteen semi-structured interviews with Spanish experts in RRI. Likewise, the article addresses the relationship between RRI and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). As a main conclusion, we observe that RRI has the potential to become the driving force for new forms of governance and communication, but requires changes in corporate philosophy and performance, as it is a bottom-up participatory movement, promoted by the objective of a sustainable society for future generations. In addition, this study represents a contribution to the current discussion regarding the application of the principles and processes of RRI beyond the academic field.

In this paper we analyze the highlights of the survey prepared under the auspices of the “Scientific Culture Research Project: perception and attitudes towards science and innovation in the Spanish business sector” funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The results obtained advance that education and the promotion of an innovative attitude are the basis for achieving a successful business development since innovation is one of the key pillars of the maintenance and survival of companies today.

Newspapers have been affected by a progressive loss of readership over the last decade, especially among those under 24 years old. This group continues to stay informed about topics of their interest, but through social networks. For this reason, the press has incorporated a playful, immersive, and participatory journalism based on technologies such as virtual reality or 360 videos. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis of data obtained from eye tracking, and by subsequently performing semi-structured interviews, this research verifies the attention paid by Spanish and Portuguese university students to violent, immersive, journalistic content. Students’ understanding and awareness of this informative material with violent events is analyzed. The capability of immersive journalism to capture the attention of the public under 24 years old and to raise awareness about social problems based on visualization of violent content is highlighted.

This article presents the results of a survey of 215 organizational communication professionals in Uruguay. It describes in a comparative way the roles and tasks of professionals working in different types of organization versus those who work as consultants or service providers in organizational communication. In particular, the factors that affect the evaluation of the provision of services from the perspective of clients and consultants are studied. In addition, the functions of organizational communication and the perception of their results are examined. It is concluded that the professional career, the type of organization, and the sex of the professional affect the type of role and professional tasks. There are differences in the perception that clients and consultants have about their relationship. The predominance of external organizational communication functions weakens the results achieved in internal communication.

This study analyses the media coverage of immigration in Melilla, the land frontier between Spain and Morocco andone of the access points where immigrants enter the European Union, and the role that journalists and other agents play in spreading news on immigration. By means of a field study we analyse the type of news professionals and media that are present near the border, the logics followed by institutional press offices when providing information, and the particular conditions in which journalism is practiced in a space of juridical exceptionality. Amongst the results obtained we underscore: the predominance of a media market that, while apparently diverse, is highly dependent on institutional advertising; the relevance of figures like activists or freelance journalists in providing differentiated news on immigration; and the difficulties in working that journalists face due to arbitrariness and obscurantism when accessing images and data.

News sections, journalists and information sources in the journalistic coverage of crises and emergencies in Spain

Media social responsibility is rarely more evident than in the news coverage of a crisis, disaster or emergency. This research analyses the use of and trust in information sources through a nationwide survey of 30 editors-in-chief of Spain’s most relevant newspapers, radio, television and online media outlets (N=30). With a very high response rate (76.66%), the findings confirm that the use of unofficial sources (victims and those affected) are prioritized over official government sources. It is significant that the inferential analysis reveals that the editors give the same credibility as a source of information to the government as it does to the victims in the current context of misinformation, fake news and hoaxes. It is concluded that newsmaking should be built on the balanced use of official and unofficial sources. The results also confirm that the entire newsroom participates in this coverage and no journalistic specialization is detected amongst reporters.

LGTBI heritage and memory in the autonomous communities laws in Spain

In Spain, the laws of heritage, both national and those of autonomous regions do not make specific references to the lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and intersex (LGTBI) heritage. The few references that we can find refer to the regional laws on LGTBI equality. The present investigation has three main objectives: 1) to analyze, categorize and compare the presence and considerations on LGTBI heritage in the 9 Autonomous Communities that have legislated in terms of equality and non-discrimination in relation to LGTBI people; 2) to know if the mentions of heritage have to do with material or intangible historical heritage and historical sites in a context of timelessness, or, conversely, if allusions have to do with assets related to Francoism or of recent creation; and 3) to analyze the possible provisions that these laws may make on the presence of LGTBI-themed funds in libraries and the creation of specialized documentation centers. The methodology used is qualitative and comparative.

Between the judicialization and the attribution of responsibilities. Frames in the news coverage of political scandals in Chile (2014-2016)

The mediatization of political scandals has become a common phenomenon in the most diverse political systems. However, we know little about how the media frame this information. To answer this question, we have developed a descriptive study on a series of recent political scandals denounced in the Chilean press. Taking as a temporary framework the news published between 2014 and 2016, we analyzed the total information (n=10011) published by a sample of eleven national media, on seven political scandals that occurred during the period. We have used the QDAMiner-Wordstat program to detect frame terms, from which we have been able to identify two large frames: one referring to the “Judicialization of cases” and the other referred to the “Attribution of responsibilities”. The results are presented and discussed, examining some implications of the exercise for the understanding of the political scandals themselves and the way in which the Chilean periodic press presents and disseminates them.

CTXT: Towards a possible business model for independent digital journalism

The aim of this paper is to deepen knowledge of CTXT, an independent digital weekly magazine founded in January 2015 by journalists from leading Spanish newspapers and that in just four years has managed to carve a niche in the current media ecosystem. Based on an ongoing ethnographic research, in this article we will focus on the analysis of its business model, a central aspect in the birth and development of a small company such as CTXT, which emerged as a key issue during our field work. In a context of great difficulty to start a new independent journalism company, this model has been possible thanks to a continuous effort of search, experimentation and diversification of sources of income and thanks to the passion for journalism and the low-paid or free work of journalists and other highly qualified professionals. The team’s effort has been focused on making productive its important symbolic capital (to build the brand of a qualified, independent and alternative journalism) and its social capital (its networks with people and other related media) for, despite its small financial capital, become relevant in the media sphere. The type of journalism that CTXT proposes, attentive to being thoughtful, critical and of quality, has managed to find its audience niche and make its voice heard in the media scene.

Do bumper ads bump consumers?: An empirical research on YouTube video viewers

YouTube, the most popular present-day online video platform, is also considered one of today’s leading advertising media. There is an ongoing argument that YouTube measures and shares its own ad effectiveness. However, the consumer research results contradict with their measurements. The difficulty of measuring the performance of video ads on YouTube without YouTube’s built-in data increases the debate about its effectiveness as an advertising environment and therefore makes it more important to collect data from consumers through empirical research. This study was carried out with YouTube viewers located in Turkey, whose population is among the most online video watching Internet users in the world, to uncover the determining attitudes and the factors affecting them in the effectiveness of bumper ads, which YouTube introduced in 2016 as 6-seconds unskippable ad videos. The acquired data were tested by correlation and regression analysis under a predicted model that could explain the attitudes towards the ad. According to findings; it has been shown that the attitudes towards bumper advertisements are significantly related to the factors such as entertainment, informativeness, credibility, irritation, frequency of exposure and advertising value. However, it was found that the participants did not develop a positive attitude towards these factors, and the bumper advertisements, along with them.

Computational tools and spoken corpora design: an ongoing dialogue

The design of an oral corpus and the processes of registering, codifying and treating the materials in order to build a useful resource for linguistic analysis prompt numerous decisions regarding theory and methodology. This article is focused on those stages of corpus construction which are more clearly conditioned by the computational processing necessary to make it functional. In order to adequately match the initial expectations and the real possibilities of using the tool, each feature we intend to codify must be measured against the workload and the means required to do so. Therefore, it is essential to take into account the available possibilities of processing and exploitation as they have a crucial impact on decisions regarding the corpus’ construction.
Based on experience acquired in the construction of the ESLORA corpus, the present article looks into some of the problems arising in the process of designing an oral corpus, such as the delicacy with which oral phenomena are represented, the segmentation of the discourse, the coexistence of different simultaneous tagging systems and the particularities of annotation in a bilingual or multilingual context.

In this paper we present a specific subset of spoken corpora of the C-ORAL family, namely the C-ORAL-BRASIL corpora of spontaneous Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Stemmed as the non-European branch of the C-ORAL-ROM project (Cresti & Moneglia 2005), the C-ORAL-BRASIL project has compiled third generation corpora of spoken BP, outstanding not only as specific BP corpora, but also as a model tool for the study of spoken language in general, also thanks to some methodological and technological improvements. Beside the resources for the study of spoken BP, a set of minicorpora compiled for specific studies on information structure (also in languages other than BP) are presented, together with other ongoing compilation processes developed within the C-ORAL-BRASIL research group. All the published resources are available for download at www.c-oral-brasil.org.

The oral corpora in Catalan and research into casual Catalan: the corpora of conversation and functional varieties of the Corpus de Català Contemporani de la Universitat de Barcelona (CCCUB)

The aim of this study is to present a set of corpora of casual Catalan (especially oral and colloquial) gathered together in the VARCOM and PRAGMAESTIL projects carried out over the past twenty years at the University of Barcelona. The research has been conducted by the Grup d’Estudi de la Variació (GEV-UB), in particular by the Grup d’Estudis de Pragmàtica i Anàlisi del Discurs (GrEPAD). This paper reviews an oral corpus of colloquial conversation (COC, 2002), an oral corpus of registers (COR, 2004) and an audiovisual oral corpus of textual varieties (CAP, 2008). In the CAP, for the first time the images of the interlocutors are shown as they speak, alongside the transcribed texts. This paper focuses on the qualitative and research-oriented nature of these corpora. The final part of the text underlines the research possibilities that the corpora offer and also highlights the gaps remaining in the field of corpus linguistics applied to Catalan and its oral varieties.

What we learn about language from Spoken Corpus Linguistics?

Over the last few decades, the Spoken Corpus Linguistics (SCL) has achieved a great deal in terms of quantity and quality of works (O’Keeffe, McCarthy 2010). Enormous progress has been made in the last thirty years and the increment of multimodal corpora stimulates sophisticated investigations on the relationship between the verbal and non-verbal component of spoken communication (Knight 2011). The SCL is a very vital field of research, which is able to provide essential data and tools for the advancement of language knowledge. In this article I will focus on the contribution that SCL and the resulting data provide to general linguistics. In § 2, I discuss the contribution that the SCL gives to a better understanding of linguistic variation; in § 3, I show how the SCL can improve the descriptive adequacy of grammar; finally, § 4 is dedicated to the contribution that speech data can give to a better knowledge of the grammaticality of languages. Across the article I will use mainly data from Italian corpora, but widely validated by comparison with data from corpora of other languages.

Sagarra «sagarreja»? A Linguistic Analysis of Josep M. de Sagarra’s Translation of «Macbeth»

The translations of Shakespeare’s plays by Josep M. de Sagarra marked a turning point regarding the previous translations of Shakespeare’s works into Catalan. This was mainly due to the number of translated plays (twenty-eight) and the fact that these translations were meant to be performed on stage. This paper reviews the main critical comments about Sagarra’s translations of Shakespeare’s plays. One of them is that some options in Sagarra’s texts sagarregen, that is, they contain more of Sagarra’s style than Shakespeare’s. The aim of this article is to refine the concept of sagarrejar and to identify the main characteristics of Sagarra’s way of translating Shakespeare. To do so, key linguistic aspects of his translation of Macbeth have been analysed: register, intensification, preferential words, addition and deletion of information, total changes of meaning and metre.

The formal lexical model of Constantí Llombart

Our aim in this contribution is to focus attention on the lexical model of Constantí Llombart, one of the main representatives of the Renaixença (19thC. Catalan Renaissance) in Valencia. Llombart wanted to extend this movement of cultural recovery to the whole of Valencian society. And that is why he proposed for literary language a linguistic model of synthesis, avoiding the vulgar forms and the Spanish forms of the colloquial language, but also the archaisms that could distance it from the popular sectors. In the lexical purity of the literary language, Llombart took into account the classical writers and the Catalan writers of the Renaixença, as well as the lexicographic sources, especially the dictionaries of Carles Ros and Josep Escrig, and surely also that of Labèrnia. Without renouncing the popular and dialectal lexicon, he proposed the literary recovery of traditional words, which were unused or decadent, and that experienced the competence of Spanish forms, and he incorporated neologisms and words introduced in the literary Catalan language during the 19th century.

This paper analyses 6 of the several adaptations for children and young people of Llibre de les Bèsties that have been published this year on the occasion of the Any Llull (2015-2016). After introducing the person of Llull as a well known writer in medieval times and providing a context for Llibre de les Bèsties in his literary production, the paper focuses on the extratextual and textual paratexts of the 6 adaptations analysed here. Having done that we can estate, on the one hand, the target reader of each adaptation and on the other hand, to what extent the message conveyed in his book can be grasped by young readers of the 21st century.

On the particular devotion of an «sloppy» pen for an «exceptional ingenuity»: an interpretation of the «Cicle dels rams» by Francesc Fontanella

The present work is the first monographic critical approach to the Cicle dels rams, a set of 29 poetic letters that Francesc Fontanella wrote in Roussillon during his maturity years. It is divided into six sections. The first one is dedicated to identifying and delimiting the cycle. The second is a brief description of the texts, which reflects both its formal aspects and its content, and points out the elements, the characters and the recurring situations throughout the cycle that provide it with a sense of unity. The third section analyzes the love discourse of the texts, with particular emphasis on their uniqueness in the fontanellan love lyrics. The fourth section argues that the texts, based on a probably real biographical circumstance —lthe convalescence of a lady—l must be read as literary pieces designed to entertain, and deals with analysing the different strategies that are mobilized with this purpose: humor, wonder and enigma. In the last section, a proposal for the dating of the cycle is exposed, based on a series of indications extracted from the texts and, finally, the evidence presented is used to build an overall reading of the cycle.

Content and language integrated learning: Which language? How is it integrated? What for?

The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, it deals with the terminological and pedagogical vagueness of Content and Language Integrated Learning. On the other hand, it assesses this teaching approach from a plurilingual perspective. With respect to the first aim, we will explain the difference between CLIL and CEIL, as the former embraces the latter. Regarding the second aim, we will discuss one of the issues recurrent in most debates concerning plurilingual education, namely, the feasibility of acquiring the target language at no cost to subject learning or to first language development. The inclusion of a number of pedagogies based on genre, language awareness or translanguaging will be presented as paramount to achieve all the didactic potential of quality CLIL.

This paper explores the implications of the global dimension of English as a world lingua franca in teaching the language in our educational environment. It is argued that there is a need to transcend paradigm that looks at the native speaker as the learning and teaching model in order to move towards a model based on the competent language user. The paper also deals with the figure of the ideal teacher from this perspective, as well as the challenges in assessing language competence and in introducing intercultural competence in language teaching.

Educating students with heritage languages: present views and future challenges

Given the increase of mobility and migration phenomena, around 244 million people around the world are migrants. This trend has turned diversity into one of the main characteristics of contemporary societies. In this context, multilingualism has become highly valued and, consequently, language learning is amply promoted. We will specifically focus on heritage languages (HLs). A HL can be defined as a language spoken at home which, crucially, is not the dominant language of the community at large. In this article, we will basically focus on HLs in educational settings and take also into account the new languages to which migrant students are exposed to, in addition to maintenance and promotion (or lack thereof) of HLs in the host community. Additionally, we will refer to different HL teaching programmes, considering their characteristics and efficiency, and we will focus mostly on Catalan-speaking territories as well as on the connection between LHs and identity. Finally, we will mention some future challenges in these areas from a pedagogical viewpoint and provide some concluding remarks.

In this article we want to make a historical approach to the development of multilingual education in the Valencian Community. In the first part we will review some facts that seem significant to explain the situation of the Valencian educational system in relation to the teaching of the language before the approval of the Law of use and education of Valencian (LUEV). In the second part, we will describe the deployment of the Valencian educational system from the approval of the LUEV to analyse how an initially bilingual and, subsequently multilingual, system has been configured and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the different educational programs that have been have applied within the framework of the LUEV.

This article deals with the current educational trends in multilingual education and the challenges they pose. It presents the current linguistic portrait in most of the educational centres where several languages coexist both inside and outside the classroom. Different educational trends related to the promotion of multilingualism are explained, such as the importance of the maintenance of first languages, the early introduction of English, and new language teaching approaches, like CLIL and EMI. We also describe an emerging new paradigm, known as translanguaging, which adopts a real multilingual perspective and includes recent research on the acquisition of additional languages and multilingual competence. Finally, some notes about multilingual didactics and future lines of research are proposed.

This article focuses on some syntactic contexts that allow avoiding the locative clitic hi, and that, in some cases, can even force such avoidance. However, the presence or the absence of this pronoun is not arbitrary. We analyse an aspect of locative verbs and verbs of inherently directed motion, which concerns the interface properties, such as the lexicon-syntax and the syntax-pragmatics interfaces: the functional category Deixis. We assume a neoconstructionist approach, according to which some aspects of the sentential meaning are determined by the syntactic structure, whereas other aspects come from the lexical elements.

Geolinguistical study of the speech in La Safor

This paper describes in detail the speech in the region of La Safor —with emphasis on the phonetics and the lexical, and also on the morphosyntax and the phraseology. People from almost all the towns and villages in the region and bordering ones were surveyed between 2008 and 2015. A description of the regional speech is given based on the results obtained. The repopulation process in the 17th century explains the Balearic influence in this dialectal variation of southern Valencian. Geographical factors have created areas with common characteristics within La Safor and have boosted the entrance of features from other dialects (central Valencian) and subdialects (southern Valencian from inland regions) into the region. This first monographic approach to Catalan in La Safor raises several interesting points, such as the devoicing of voicing sibilants in Gandia and in other nearby towns; the introduction of features from central Valencian into the north of the region; or the need for considering the insular influence not only in La Marina Alta and Baixa or El Comtat, but also in La Safor.

In the light of the theoretical precedents on the ecopoetics (Tom Pughe, Pierre Schoentjes, Adolf Piquer and Vicent Salvador), we propose here an ecopoetic reading of space and territory in the works of the poet of Menorca Ponç Pons. What is the place of the nature and how the poet represents, through and thanks to the poetry, his relationship to the native island? What is the scope of this environmental poetry? To answer these questions, we will focus specifically on the maritime space, the house and the hut of the poet, the marine and saline world, the natural heritage threatened, finally on the defense of the Catalan language, which are as many anchor points of its poetry and the affirmation of an identity that is also threatened.

«Paine pour joie». The motto of Pere de Portugal, a prince of the late middle ages

The motto arose at the end of the fourteenth century in order to overcome the limitations of the heraldic system, subject to a too rigid code and conceived exclusively to transfer dynastic and lineage concepts. This study proposes a careful dissection of the authentic literary and aesthetic «alter ego» chosen by the nobleman Pere de Portugal, ephemeral king of Catalonia (1464-1466). The cartography of its motto, present in all kinds of architectural spaces and personal and institutional objects, reveals that it made an extraordinarily intensive use, first in Portugal and later in Catalonia. After most of these manifestations, the desire for legitimacy and a strong aesthetic sense palpitate. But above all the will to express a moral maxim, connected with chivalrous or speculative literature, inspired, among others, in the currents of pagan moral philosophy (Seneca and Boecius) and the humanists of the Trecento Italian. Only in this way can we understand that the motto Paine pour joie, like other similar emblematic formulas, is the result of the intellectual interests and anxieties of a late-medieval knight rather than the reflex-sublimation of his biographical experiences.

After discussing critical evaluations and the main source for Ana Caro’s Count Partinuplés, this essay proposes possible dates of composition and then analyzes the ways in which the work contains echoes and rewritings of three comedias published in the first part of Calderón’s plays: The Great Cenobia, The Phantom Lady and Life is a Dream. As we review Caro’s incorporation of material from three plays of very different genres, we focus on numerous questions, both minor and significant: from negative horoscopes to parodic saints; from the role of woman as invisible or powerful to onomastic puzzles; and from complex scenes with portraits to non-trivial trinomials.

The article focuses on Los encantos de Medea by Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla, from the euripidean and senecan hypotexts on to Lope and Calderón’s works, high lighting the affinities and diversities between Rojas’s pieza and the above mentioned texts. It will also analyze the spatial and chronological contextualization of Los encantos and the contribution of the expressly comic agent, the gracioso Mosquete, to the general structure of the text. Above all, it will discuss the genre question, trying to refute Julio’s opinion, who considers it «comedia de aparato o tramoya de tema mitólogico», without being, because of it, a parodic work as Araico maintains. Although Rojas wanted to write a pieza based on mythological stories that had already had a tragic treatment, he ended up creating a type of tragedy that looks very peculiar and new, also in comparison to the Toledan’s tragic corpus, which is already quite unique.

In order to examine Calderón’s peculiar poetic style, we are conducting a study on calderonian metrics which, in the present article, focuses on one of its least studied aspects, accentual displacements, which we will analyze in a corpus little frequented by the critics: Calderón’s non-dramatic poetry, a reduced and safe group of texts in which we can examine metrical peculiarities that should be later explored in Calderón’s plays. After briefly reviewing the question of Calderón’s style, we will examine the problem from a theoretical point of view, after which we will study it concretely in the corpus, where we find an apparently reduced number of displacements that in reality, and in relative terms, is quite large and revealing. In order to understand the significance of the phenomenon, we will divide the corpus in octosyllabic poems and poems in Italian verse, a division which will help us gauge the significance of the differences and, above all, their meaning.

Recasting a comedia by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Parallel Adaptations of «El mayor encanto, amor» in Brussels and Amsterdam, c. 1670

In this article, the two parallel adaptations in Dutch of Calderón’s El mayor encanto, amor are discussed for their textual and scenographic changes. The first adaptation is the mythical play Ulysses in’t eylandt van Circe by the playwright Claude de Grieck, published in Brussels in 1668. The tragedy De toveres Circe is the second adaptation. It was translated by the playwright Adriaen Bastiaensz de Leeuw in Amsterdam in 1670. The main argument of this article is that the Dutch authors changed theatrical and scenographic elements of the original by Calderón on the basis of the Italian opera Ulisse all’isola di Circe (performed in Brussels in 1650 and another time in 1655) by the Italian composer Gioseffo Zamponi on the one hand, and the horrific tragedy Medea by the Dutch playwright Jan Vos on the other hand. Therefore, this article proposes that El mayor encanto, amor by Calderón was disseminated differently in Brussels than in Amsterdam with regards to the emotional effects, the scenography of both works and the ideas about an adequate poetics to move the spectators.
PALABRAS CLAVE / KEYWORDS: Adaptaciones neerlandesas; transmisión cultural; escenografía; Ulisse all’isola di Circe; El mayor encanto, amor; Pedro Calderón de la Barca / Dutch adaptations. Cultural transfer. Scenography. Ulisse all’isola di Circe.

The present study examines the autograph text of the sacramental play written by Calderón de la Barca in 1642 El divino cazador. The starting point is the essential bibliography on comedies and the main goal is to confirm to what extent the poet works in a similar way in his manuscripts, regardless of the content. With this objective, the authorial interventions from the title to the specific lapses are examined, along with the stage directions or indications of which actors would represent which characters. The latter information also emphasizes the dual character of theater as literature and entertainment.

The recreation of the myth of Hercules in Fieras afemina amor, the Calderonian mythological comedy composed on the occasion of the birthday of Queen Regent María Ana (December 1669), offers already at the Loa clear indications that invite an allusive and allegorical interpretation of the piece.

The question of generic identification of No hay cosa como callar of Calderón is one of the most discussed by the comediantes. Against the ones who are considering this play as a tragedy (for example, Ignacio Arellano in two papers from 2013 and 2018) are the other ones who argue in favor of it being a comedy, and that’s the case of who is writing the present paper, and is extending that way his initial interpretation daring back to 2015. Beginning with a detailed analysis of the dramatic trajectories of the two protagonists, don Juan de Mendoza and Leonor de Silva, the investigator comes to the conclusion that this play integrates very well the characteristics of calderonian comedies of capa y espada, with their specific way of comicality (very different from Lope’s or Tirso’s style), with their ideological promotion of the women’s role in the división of honorific work, and their dramatic intensification of chance and good fortune’s function.
