Professional trends for television programme researchers and opportunities that arise in the labour market due to the widespread media consumption and the increasing number of diverse media (mass media, internet, cultural industries, Digital Terrestrial Television...) are analysed. We present the promotion, projection and creation of virtual enterprises of audiovisual researchers in the international arena using four case studies. These research experts, most of them freelancers, have extensive experience in locating images, negotiating licenses and liquidating rights to third parties as part of the task of documenting multimedia productions. The expanding broadcast horizons, the conquest of heterogeneous customers and the use of digital archives predict new development paths and a bright future for this profession in the digital age.

One of the aims proposed in the Radiotelevision Valenciana (RTVV) Digitalization of Audio-visual Documentation project was to migrate the information that we had been describing, cataloguing, and indexing in BRS’s different databases throughout the years. We were relying on the work of unification and normalization undertaken in 2004, when we moved from BRS/search version 7.0 to the environment BKM v.3.1. From our experience, we know that the quality of a TV archive improves to the extent that it covers both the current and restrospective information. Therefore, a specific workflow was created to automatically digitize the images contained in the Betacam tapes from the xml file generated in the new Tarsys system

The explosion of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has affected the work routines of professional journalists. Immediacy, one of the essential characteristics that the ICTs contribute to the practise of journalism, has turned the work of journalists into a race, with the databases contributing to the daily work. At present, journalists handle a great number of references relative to databases and rely on the possibility of access to an enormous quantity of information across the internet. In addition, databases have become a means of structuring the knowledge, content and in many cases even the infrastructure of media communication.

Newspapers for mobile devices? E-book, E-ink and convergence of online and printed press

The pathway to the complete digitisation and substitution of printed press is now a reality. The imminent commercialisation of new mobile devices using e-ink, licensed by Philips, and especially the new model of Sony’s Portable Reader System in Spain (announced for Spring 2009), a determined commercial strategy, and incipient research by some Spanish newspapers make us wonder whether we are facing the end of the printed press. At the moment, the new devices are much better than their predecessors, but enough problems remain to make us doubt that we are at the beginning of the end of newsprint. The strengths of some other devices that differ from the e-book but could eventually be able to present books or newspaper on their screens, such as iPhone-like cell phones or Amazon’s Kindle (not yet available in Spain) opens an interesting era of competition and convergence

Digitization of media archives has improved both news librarians’ and journalists’ work. However, a significant proportion of Spanish journalists prefer searching for information on the Internet rather than in archives. Moreover, the quality of journalists’ work decreases because few journalists receive proper training on information retrieval. Our research is based on ethnographic observation and interviews with more than 70 professionals from several newsrooms carried out between 2001 and 2006, complemented by a survey of the heads of archives at the main channels and newspapers.

Memory as a criterion for quality assessment in online newspapers: some considerations

The consolidation of cyberjournalism as a new form of journalistic production in recent years brought about the need to evaluate the quality of newspapers and magazines produced for the Web. Using the same concepts and analytic tools developed for the traditional press in the evaluation of cyberjournalism leads to the undervaluation of specific characteristics of journalistic products designed for the new medium. On the other hand, analytic tools used for website evaluation are generally too generic and ill adapted for the specificities of cyberjournalism. In this article we explore some of the difficulties involved in quality assessment of online journalism. The difficulties in analyzing memory in cyberjournalism is used to indicate some of the challenges posed for the webnewspaper analyst.

Evaluation of digital press archives: indicators and examples of good practice

The majority of online newspapers provide access to retrospective information through press archive services, a product of great interest for libraries and other information services. The aim of this study is to identify key indicators for the evaluation of digital press archives and also identify examples of good practices in Spain for each of them. We propose a list of twenty-seven indicators grouped into four main sections (general features, contents, query system, and presentation of results), describe each one and include some examples of successful implementation. Methodologically, the indicators are the result of the review of the literature on evaluating web resources, databases and digital press archives, as well as the analysis of press archive services of newspapers from Spain and Catalonia. The use of these indicators can be useful for libraries and other information services to guide their users in consulting retrospective press information.

The biography of news researcher Liz Donovan, who died in 2008, serves as a thread of a journey through the profession of news librarian and describes the evolution of newspaper newsrooms throughout 40 years. Information systems and resources have changed -from paper clippings to the Internet and Web 2.0-, but the economic situation of the press has also changed, leading to cutbacks. Unfortunately, with the mistaken idea that “everything is on the Internet”, news companies are devaluing the contributions made by information professionals to newspaper content, and often close or decimate the news libraries, thus losing an important amount of know-how and quality.

Second, a conceptual design is proposed as a basis for construction of a project database system.
One of the most popular services in web 2.0 is the social promotion of news. Digg and Menéame –the second one in Spain and Latin America–, are very well known. Using Menéame open code, a team of information professionals created DocuMenea with the same characteristics but limited to Library and Information Science. This paper presents an evaluation of this service from its creation in November 2006 to December 2008. The results show that 2,166 news items were sent and 1,610 were published. The service has 582 users, with unequal participation because 74% of them never had sent any news and 91% did not vote on any occasion. Four thematic areas were identified: Google, libraries, social networking / Web 2.0, and the book. Finally, sources in which the top three positions were occupied by daily general interest newspapers were ranked as the most important to DocuMenea.

Due to their increasing connectivity and processing power, mobile devices are engaged in a process of mediatization that involves, on one side, conventional media related paradigms (standardized contents, pay per access, individualized passive consumption) and, on the other side, the Social Web related 2.0 paradigm (personalized and user generated content, third party open environments, collaborative work, prevalence of ‘sharing’ logics, etc.). This paper poses a general framework of those factors that enable the relevance of the Web 2.0 paradigm in the current development of market and data consumption in mobile devices, including some conceptual outline that may prove useful in future research of the evolution of mobile content production, business and consumption models.

We detail the characteristics of this mobile Web 2.0, the existing barriers that may impede its growth, as well as the distinctive characteristics of mobile browsing and the various technologies that favour the progress of the mobile Web 2.0, with a special focus in ajax, mashups, widgets and content syndication.

Mobility and access to Web contents and services from any place having an internet connection are both advantages of using mobile devices like mobile phones, pdas, smartphones, ultra mobile PCs or ultra low cost PCs. However, new questions also arise, mainly related to content accessibility: their characteristics, connections and the way people in motion connect to the internet generate different requirements. In this paper a general landscape of the mobile web is drawn from a librarian’s perspective

Personal bibliographic software helps to organize references. These packages can create bibliography and footnotes in combination with popular word processing programs. They also allow direct searching in some data bases and sharing of bibliographic files among research colleagues. However, as search results become more and more numerous, conventional treatment of reference lists presents some difficulties to scientific information users. Along with other applications designed to visualize search results, RefViz is more a data visualization and analysis software than a bibliographic management package. Nevertheless, its use in combination with other reference managers can give users a powerful tool to explore a large amount of collected references based on their content.

On the internet, statistical tools are essential to measure the results of online marketing campaigns. The lack of those tools is annoying because companies cannot make decisions based only on intuition and expectations. A webmaster has to know clearly the objectives and targets, and has to fight to enlarge the user base and to improve their conversion rates. Google Analytics offers the best statistical service: good quality, friendly interface and free service. It offers not only statistical data, but improves the ROI of the companies, i. e., it helps them to earn more money. This is why Google Analytics is used more and more everywhere.

Degree reduction and k-core methods are used to extract sub-networks and a Ward’s hierarchical cluster analysis is performed. The resulting network identifies five classes, whose members are actors occupying similar social positions, and at the same time different mechanisms, based mainly in similarity and physical proximity, are proposed from the interpretative point of view.

Use of ontologies to enhance the results of web search engines

With the increasing number of web sites, the time spent by users reviewing the results also increases. In addition, the nature of web content is semantically heterogeneous and oriented to people who will be able to understand it. Frequently the results from search engines do not correspond to the expected topic. One approach to improve the results is to match the content of the web pages with a formal vocabulary on the topic (ontology) and with the informal vocabulary (common terms of the topic but not in the ontology). This paper describes a web search method that takes advantage of ontologies to reduce the search area of certain topics. With this approach the relevance of search engine results is enhanced by filtering the content through the integration of domain ontologies, the WordNet thesaurus, and a hierarchical similarity measure. Thus, the improvement on the relevance of results reduces the time required to review such results.

Thus, monitoring its use, while preserving the anonymity of its users, is a very valuable tool to know the informal structure of an organization and to compare it with the prescribed formal structure. In particular, we present a community analysis performed on the email network of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain.

This paper studies the phenomenon of structural size effect and strain localization in J2 plasticity. Size effect is here understood as the change in the response of a given structure when the spatial dimensions are scaled up or down while the geometry and other relevant properties of the structure are preserved. The work exploits the advantages of the mixed displacement–pressure formulation in incompressible or quasi-incompressible situations. Elasto-J2-plastic constitutive behaviour with regularized softening is considered. Stability issues are discussed to ensure existence and uniqueness of the solution of the corresponding discrete finite element formulation. Numerical examples show that the formulation derived is able to solve a wide range of structural scales, including real life engineering applications. The results obtained do not suffer from spurious mesh dependence. Furthermore, the formulation includes the classical theories of perfect plasticity and linear fracture mechanics as limit cases.

In general, these documents have been identified using different thesauri and, at the same time, different languages. There are no systems that help the user to consult these documents using natural language, and also in their own language. Europeana has set up a prototype of a semantic search engine. In this text we analyze its structure and functioning. The conclusion, however, is that this is a very experimental version.

Until now, the paradigm of Human-Computer Interaction has focused on the interaction with two-dimensional interfaces showing the strong dichotomy between the real and the digital. The advent of virtual worlds are opening up new possibilities to develop spaces that can be more appropriate in certain circumstances to show users specific type of information, create physical places or objects which faithfully represent the real world, geolocate or interact with them beyond the limitations of twodimensional images and the written word. Finally, the arrival of the augmented reality aims to go beyond the simulation of a three-dimensional environment on a flat surface such as a monitor showing the three-dimensional virtual objects and take all the digital advantages resulting from this for improve the learning and knowledge human.

The evolution of internet to a multitude of social networks and sites where anyone can communicate and publish what they want and in any format they want, is causing a growing fragmentation of information, but this can be controlled through lifestreaming, or what is the same, can be gathered in one place all the internet content production generated by a person or an organization. It is described the concept of lifestreaming and the most important applications and services that its implementation allows.

The recent emergence and use of a range of technologies and trends (within the so-called Science 2.0) is helping to encourage and facilitate collaborative research between researchers in different universities and countries. This paper reviews some of these services, and reflects on possible effects of their use in scientific information production and consumption patterns.

Evaluation of scientific journals in Spain and abroad is at the peak of attention. There are several journal evaluation systems but there are few relations among them. They cover quality indicators interesting for editors, researchers and evaluators but, how are these groups really affected? On the one hand, researchers from other areas are obliged to know some concepts and terms from Bibliometrics or Information Science. That makes it possible to develop a certain “users training” as well as releasing one of the aspects of Documentation. On the other hand, some researchers engaged with scientific journals as editors or members of the editorial or advisory board express their critical opinion related to some systems or indicators and from their discussions we obtain ideas to improve the evaluation systems. Finally, editors visit these information systems to see how they have been evaluated but are not sure to which system to pay attention. A general conclusion could be obtained: research about journal quality has impact: a social impact.

Digital information, digital books and the World Wide Web are gaining an increasing and accelerated importance over paper resources. Therefore, it is time for librarians to begin to assume new roles, including the construction, maintenance and management of websites for each library, as long as its resources permit. Acquisition and application of information architecture and usability skills are essential for good design of these digital libraries, along with the identification of valuable resources on the Web, the development of repositories and the creation and management of digital communities around the library’s website using the tools of Web 2.0. This process should be accompanied by corresponding changes at the political level to facilitate the allocation of the financial resources, technology, training and human resources necessary to do so.

A reflection is made about the “Library 2.0” concept as a new way of understanding libraries, underlining that the use of the technology does not by itself define a Library 2.0, but rather the attitude toward users and, most importantly, good planning of both virtual and physical services. The innovations of recent decades are reviewed; in every case, it was thought that we were facing a revolution of the library model. Finally, we discuss whether the new concept of “Library 2.0” is really a revolution or will simply be absorbed inside the “old” model that we currently have.

New professional profiles for new public library projects

The public library has to be considered as a transversal service cross-linked not only to cultural, but also to social, educational and economic policies. It is a service immersed in numerous social processes of the community. In consequence, public library projects have to be connected to and carried out in cooperation with other municipal policies. This new concept for public libraries implies a consideration of the types of professional profiles required for its successful development. The purpose of this text is to reflect on the needed professional profiles. In public libraries, we cannot talk about just one profile of competencies, but several profiles differentiated according to the different workplaces. As a consequence, we need to talk about the knowledge and skills specifically associated with a profile. This text also considers the benefits of working in public libraries with multidisciplinary teams of information professionals, cultural/community coordinators, social workers, educators, etc.

Recent criticisms and controversies about abuse or misuse of bibliometric research evaluation are placed in the context of general conflicts of values that knowledge industrialization is bringing about, as bibliometrics seems to be a tool of post-academic or industrial science, a form of scientific work that breaks away from traditional academic principles.

The relationships between politics and scientists of interest in the findings of bibliometric studies are discussed in this text. The use of bibliometric arguments by commissions such as Cneai (Comisión Nacional de Evaluación de la Actividad Investigadora), among others, in the process of making decisions on “sections of research” and aspects of science policy, constitute a discussion of undoubted importance and interest to information professionals.

Based on the idea that the purpose of scientific publication is that knowledge reaches those who need it as quickly as possible and in the best way, the paper reviews the impact of the internet and new technologies in publication models, from self-archiving to open access. A comparison is also made with the developments occurring in the media. Finally, new trends and approaches in scientific publication are outlined that will lead to new scenarios, from which new models will be evaluated and redesigned in the future.

Multimedia and Reading Ways: a State of the Art

Multimedia is one of the less studied characteristics, probably because of the less-developed level of the digital language. Along with hypertext and interactivity, it is one of the characteristics that defines the digital edition. Those characteristics have been always studied from the point of view of production, although not so much from the point of view of reception. How do users read a digital text? The reader’s participation, reading depth, different trailblazing, the relation user-interface and the conception of multimedia text as a module of a database introduce major changes in the reception of the text, which can and must be studied.

Televisual Teenager Phenomena. Adolescent Prototypes in TV Series in Spain

This work is doubly justified: as a part of a bigger research project on types of so far marginalized characters in television drama serials; and as a contribution to the teenage invasion of the TV screen as a call to this kind of audience. The aim of this paper is to show prototypes of adolescents created in televised products broadcast today in Spain. The methodology is based on two factors: a quantitative one about serials and characters, and a qualitative analysis of drama serials and teen characters. The result confirms the existence of a powerful standardized appearance and attitude regarding the models proposed by American series over the Spanish ones. The conclusion discusses the generation of contradictory teenage prototypes.

Latin American Journalism: A Review of Five Decades and a Proposal for a Model of Analysis

Based on an historical analysis of the last five decades of research, this article analyzes the elements that define the journalism in Latin America. The work is based on the common social structures and the fact that journalism mediates in the construction of reality throughout the region, proposing a model that describes the individual, organizational and social aspects that have influenced the development of the profession. The results indicate that the educational problems linked to both the identity and the autonomy of the profession, the cultural value associated to professional practice, the existence and reach of the Teachers Associations, political and economic peculiarities, and the considerable influence exercised by Europe and the United States, are all aspects that make Latin American journalism different journalism in the rest of the world. Still, despite these similarities, neither a shared conceptualization nor a homologated operationalization of the profession exists in Latin America.

Studies related to the use of addictive substances usually reflect the point of view of consumers. In this paper we present a qualitative analysis of the answers of non-users related to the impact of television on their attitudes and behaviour. This article is the result of extensive research carried out in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico that aimed to describe the relationship between television and the identification and promotion of values that protect the city’s teenagers from drug use. The data obtained provide those in charge of television programming with suggestions from the teenagers to help them stay drug-free.

PaleoTV, NeoTV and MetaTV in US Drama Series

This paper analyses the paleoTV, neoTV and metaTV features in three US drama series belonging to drama series genres and adventure subgenres: adventures («Lost»), crime («CSI: Crime Scene Investigation») and politics («The West Wing»). The aim of the research is to study these TV series in relation to the three eras which divide the short history of TV up to today, to determine the features that define this media in serial fiction and its relation to its own diachronic moment. The methodology of this work is based on the concepts of several scholars and makes references to other US fiction series. It emphasizes the autoreferenciality and intertextuality as some of metaTV’s most important features.

This paper describes the main contributions by students from a Teaching Innovation Project (2005) at the University of Córdoba focused on a part-time attendance teaching methodology (blended learning) through a virtual space within the degree of Educational Psychology. The most relevant contributions to the project (later applied in the Faculty of Educational Sciences in the University of Granada, Spain) are also collected. The students’ thoughts on the strengths and weakness as the main receptors of teaching in the European Space are an important factor in the improvement of teaching restructuring, based on the training necessities of all the educational agents involved directly and indirectly in this moment of change (teachers, students, educational authorities, etc.).

Learning with videogames: Ideas for a Renewal of the Theory of Knowledge and Education

In this paper we reflect on the relationship of games, cognitive development and educational processes during a time of profound technological change. Specifically, we consider the role of videogames in knowledge construction and in children’s education. By studying both the logic of video games and how players understand them, we can develop interesting ideas for re-thinking theories on knowledge and education. Primarily, this text analyzes the role of video games in the world of play in order to delve into its unique narrative models. Finally, we evaluate their virtual features for learning and education in general, then focusing on the risks entailed. We conclude with a cognitive-pedagogical evaluation of the connective thought that videogames can develop.

Audiovisual Narrations Based on Intercultural Relationships in Education

In this article, we describe a work started in 2008 and carried out in two public schools. We analyze the possible contribution of narration (photographic and film languages) to mutual human knowledge and the understanding of the events that surround group knowledge. We think that this type of audiovisual narration is more appropriate than mere texts to relate the affective and rational in Primary school children, as they are a culturally diverse population and, consequently, not all of them are literate in the native language. We envision storytelling as the basis for using of technical resources to encourage not only inter- and intra-group exchanges with these children, but also to encourage mutual understanding among them. We conclude by pointing out how teaching situations mediated by the use of technological resources help the participants to make sense of things, ideas, relationships and life events that are dispersed, as well as to build interpersonal meanings. Finally, through these methods, the protagonists of the audiovisual narrations are able to use the dialogue and the negotiation of meaning as the best way to encourage more democratic, egalitarian and fair practices.
