Metaphors about librarians and the information world

This essay on librarians’ roles uses some of the metaphors used to talk about books and the information world as its theoretical approach. The purpose is to justify the role of the librarian as beacon and specially as educator: to teach, to facilitate or to mediate in order to help people improve their information skills for life in the information world, become information literate, and live with other people, training them and still being among them. For that reason we invented a new Spanish word, “entrenauta”, with which we synthesized this proposed role.

The new ISI Web of Knowledge interface includes several changes in the way information is searched for and retrieved, which we examine. The new version enhances information resource integration, provides easier discovery and navigation paths, stresses information retrieval capacity, and intends overall to adapt to common technological habits. The objectives seem to have been to compete more efficiently with other scientific information providers, to consolidate the product as a polyvalent high-quality information search tool, and to consistently insert the system into scientific research workflows.

United we are stronger. Cooperation among the German scientific libraries

Library cooperation in Germany is a tradition that predates the emergence of internet. This is explained partly by the absence of a “classic” National Library, as a single central institution. This absence has been replaced by the three major German libraries, which have distributed among themselves the function of a national library. The other reason for this tradition is the Federal political system and the responsibility of each of the Federal States in cultural matters, including libraries. This meant that at both regional and interregional levels, there has traditionally been a solid cooperation, at least among scientific libraries. Later, the arrival of automation has facilitated the production of collective regional catalogues. With the entrance into the so-called “digital age”, the tendency to cooperation has been intensified, so that today one can talk about an “age of cooperation”. One example of the ease and assiduousness of this cooperation are the new services which, in most cases, supply several libraries together; others are the specialised virtual libraries, the consortium acquisition of digital media user licences, including national licences for certain items, and the cooperative creation of a long term national digital archive.

Since March 2007, a group of information professionals from the autonomous region of Madrid has been working voluntarily and independently on the creation of a professional college for archivists, librarians and information scientists. However, it is necessary to present a bill at the region’s Parliament to be finally approved into law. This action developed as a reaction against the lack of an official organism to regularise this profession. The professional college will be in charge of representing and defending the profession and maintaining the relations with central and regional governments, the private sector, other professional colleges and universities.

The application of the Cameo (Characterizations Automatically Made and Edited Online) bibliometric technique -one of the most advanced methodologies for the analysis and representation of information- to the research history of Marshall McLuhan allows us to create a scientific portrait of this Canadian communications expert. The Cameo portrait identifies McLuhan’s professional and academic interests, the authors that most heavily influenced his wave-breaking theories and the evolution of his line of thought in current trends of Communication. By analysing the relational information of citations contained in articles about McLuhan in the ISI Web of Science, we were able to create a map of his intellectual sojourns, including signposts of the most influential authors in his professional career, along with a second representation that shows the “footprints” his writings have left in the world.

Applying metric analysis to the information contained in patent documentation has become one of the principal techniques for modeling technology scenarios for government, business and industry, research institutes, projects, etc. We propose using bibliometric indicators for patent research, identifying patterns and trends based on available technological evidence as well as detecting possible social networks in the “hidden web”, which permits effective decisionmaking in the research context. A case study is used to demonstrate these concepts, analysing the EUA patents database and processing it with a tool developed by Pinar del Río University. Ucinet software is used on occasion to map existing social networks. This makes it possible to produce results that demonstrate the relevance of patentometric studies to research projects, including the possibility of redirecting the objectives of a research project on the basis of this analysis.

The advantages of software packages specifically designed for journal management and publishing are described, analysing their relevance to several areas that determine the final quality of the journal (managerial flexibility, efficiency, standardisation, visibility, impact and other added values). Lastly, we present several key points to be considered before choosing one of these software packages, as well as a brief description of the most popular options, both commercial and freely available (usually based on an Open Source code).

A new role for the academic librarian: data curation

Academic libraries are facing a range of new challenges in the 21st century. Models of scholarly communication are experiencing a revolution with the advent of open access, with libraries adopting a lead role in self-archiving their institutional outputs in digital repositories. In addition, researchers are taking advantage of the computational power at their disposal, conducting research in innovative and collaborative ways that use and produce vast amounts of data. Such research-generated data underpins intellectual ideas, which in turn propagates new methodologies, analysis and ultimately knowledge. It is crucial that we preserve such mechanisms and output for future generations. With the experience gained from traditional cataloguing, indexing and organisational skills coupled to those acquired in developing, establishing and maintaining institutional repositories, the time is ripe for academic librarians to explore a new role. Research data need to be looked after from the moment of creation through their life cycle. The concept of data curation refers to activities like digital preservation but also those geared towards adding value to the data so that they can be discovered and reused. This article introduces e-Research and the likely function of academic libraries in this domain. After this, data curation is described and several initiatives of interest for information professionals in this field are presented.

The more structured is a scientific system and the greater the degree of integration of its entities the more efficient is its management. Curricula vitae (CV) of researchers are documents that collect data on individuals, institutions and works, and seen as a whole, are a potential source of inside information about the scientific activity of a country. But if they are not stored properly it is not possible to use this knowledge to conduct studies on them. Moreover, the absence of a single standardized CV requires the researchers to fill in multiple versions along their professional practice. The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (Fecyt), together with the entities belonging to the Spanish system of science, technology and enterprises (Secte), have initiated the project Standard Curriculum Vitae. This article describes its operation and underlines the benefits of its implementation.

Understanding why information technology is accepted or rejected by society has become one of the most challenging issues for researchers in our field. In order to understand personal attitudes toward communication and information technology (CIT), some researchers attempt to identify user perceptions of efficacy, anxiety, satisfaction, and usefulness, based on attitude factors. We discuss some of the primary research findings related to user attitudes and perceptions toward information technology. In addition, we review key studies that have implemented these assessment methods, within both the general context of computer use and the specific environment of web technology. We conclude that the level of technological sophistication and capacity are less relevant to effective implementation than positive user attitudes toward the technology.

In various contexts, a concern has been expressed, both implicitly and explicitly, that search engines in general, and Google in particular, may be using some system that obscures certain cultural content or emphasizes the Anglo-Saxon perspective, to the detriment of other cultures and languages. To put it in other terms, we present an exclusively theoretical approach to the idea that intensive use of search engines, which is so common now, represents a threat to cultural diversity. First, with the goal of putting our study in context, we present two previous debates on the dilemma of protectionism vs. the free flow of cultural products, and then analyse the most relevant characteristics of search engines (with a focus on Google) to determine whether they constitute a credible threat to cultural and linguistic diversity on the Web.

Viability of establishing institutional and biomedical/health sciences repositories in Valencia

Self-archiving was studied in 3,495 papers in 109 core journals that published 50% of Valencia’s scientific production in biomedical and health sciences included in the 2000-2004 ISI databases. The effectiveness of self-archiving is analyzed with respect to the feasibility of launching open access institutional and subject-specific repositories. Data were obtained from the Sherpa/Romeo database. Self-archiving is favourable for the implementation of institutional repositories because 56.8% of papers could be immediately deposited, a percentage that increases to 72% after a period of embargo and to 87% when papers published in full text journals are included. The feasibility of establishing biomedical and health science repositories for the Valencian Community is questionable, due to the fact that most publishers will not grant permission for inclusion in a repository unless mandated by the research funding agency, a practice lacking in our country at present.

Public libraries are the entrance to a knowledge society with equal access for everyone and are also a suitable place for the social integration of many different groups of immigrants. Therefore, they should create services and initiate programs in response to the requests of the multicultural communities they serve. Segovia’s libraries identified the information needs of immigrants through a series of questionnaires, administered through direct personal interactions with key informants from three distinct but complementary sources: public libraries, educational centres, and immigrant associations. We offer suggestions on innovative and optimal responses to the needs we detected.

Technology, innovation and the social web: the value of dimension in the public library. The case of the Muskiz library

The evolution of information technology and its relationship with libraries is reviewed, from the end of the twentieth century to the present, with a discussion of libaries’ response to technological changes, especially the internet and the web. A case study focuses on a small public library in Muskiz (Bizkaia/Biscay province), and its use of the social web to offer new library services. Cheaper access to technology may shift the capacity for innovation, from centres that have resources to acquire and manage proprietary solutions to institutions that modify their products and processes using open web services. We describe how scale affects a library’s access to technology and positions it in technological discontinuity: in the 20th century, technology was on the side of larger structures but currently they are penalized.

Innovation in public libraries: something new, something useful, something high-quality

Innovation does not only apply to technology. In public libraries, exploring and developing new links with the community, promoting new services, designing new models of internal communication or talent management, changing corporate image, or promoting organizational learning are also important areas of innovation. These activities are already recognized as crucial for innovating in the new “knowledge society”. As a result, when we talk about innovation in public libraries it is necessary to consider it from a triple point of view: as an organization of services, in relation to its social function as an integral part of the community, and as a center for entertainment, information and learning.

ISIS –the popular software developed at UNESCO– is a classic tool for database management. Nonetheless, in some cases the fact that it is freeware has made it seem less desireable than commercial alternatives. Although not designed as open software (despite being distributed free of charge), some modules and additional applications, such as the IsisMarc editor, have been developed using open code. IsisMarc provides an interface that is easily adapted to various MARC formats for catalog management, incorporates a Z39.50 client, and permits authority control. It can be integrated with other ISIS tools to publish databases to the web. ISIS also provides the foundation for various open software programs for library management (Catalis and OpenMarcoPolo).

Description of an ongoing project that aims to model the cultural heritage domain in an ontology, the Cantabria’s Heritage Ontology, lead by Fundación Marcelino Botín. The ontology will contain data from different and heterogeneous sources (bibliographic records, finding aids, catalogues, etc.). The project will develop a series of applications that get the most out of the ontology, beginning by a semantic portal. The portal will provide easy and intuitive access to a huge volume of information that comes from heterogeneous sources selected by domain experts. People interested in Cantabria will be able to find with as few clicks as possible, not only the information they are interested in, but also some contextual information that complements the one the user is watching, suggesting new navigation directions, and uncovering hidden relations. The ontology has been designed based on the international standards for cultural models, such as CRM, FRBR or Dublin Core, and W3C recommendations for the semantic web.

This practical approach offers a quick, straightforward solution to onomastic control in information retrieval, permitting control and development of relationships between individuals covered in the media. This creates a network of television personalities we can draw upon to improve the outcomes of retrieval processes.

The internet’s evolution toward a scenario of greater potential, with users increasingly involved in its development and management, demands a lower level of semantic ambiguity in the documents that are provided. The proposed semantic web, a concept that appeared almost a decade ago, has had only modest impact. On the other hand, web 2.0, an autonomous evolution of the web toward a collaborative environment, has met with enormous success. The solution devised by web 2.0 has exceeded the limitations of natural language processing tools and statistical approaches. For that reason, it seems logical to analyze the potential contributions that web 2.0 concepts could make to further the development of the semantic web. Some ways of making the leap from a social web to a social semantic web are discussed.

Virtual laboratory of free software for libraries

The selection of a library management system is often affected by social, economic and political conditions that may result in an inappropriate choice for a library’s needs, characteristics and functions. Free software, or freeware, is one of the more often selected solutions, given the freedom to copy, modify and distribute it in addition to free licensing and the possibilities for integration with other applications. This trend is reflected in librarianship curricula, in which automation software, repository management software, and even Linux/GNU, among others, are explained in a variety of courses. This combination of organizational needs and freeware trends led a group of professors from the Faculty of Library and Information Science (UB) and members of the Work Group on Free Software for Information Professionals (Cobdc) to create a virtual laboratory for the use of free software for library applications, as a contribution to the professional community.

ISI Web of Science 1990-2005: evolution of the science web structure in Spain

This longitudinal study of the development of Spain’s ISI scientific domain examines three key time periods: 1990-1995, 1996-2000 and 2001-2005, with the goal of describing the basic structure and backbone of Spanish research, as well as studying its development over time. To this end, ISI categories are used as units of analysis, co-citation as units of measure, and pruning algorithms to simplify the relationship between categories in the visualizations. The results show that from the macrostructure point of view, biomedicine and materials science research provide the basic nucleus at first. Over the years this nucleus is consolidated and expanded with agricultural and soil sciences research. From the microstructure perspective, an increase is observed in the number of interdisciplinary categories, which occupy central positions, indicating increased interaction between disciplines that have traditionally been more important or visible and those on the periphery, or less well known.

A practical approach to the development of ontologies from thesauri is presented, using the Methontology methodology, which permits the use of any language developed so far for the implementation of ontologies, as well as semantic web annotations based on these ontologies. This approach is an alternative to SKOS-Core, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) approach to publication of thesauri within the semantic web. The advantage of our approach is that it provides significantly more semantic information than a thesaurus (and, hence, than does SKOS-Core). A two-level ontological architecture for domain representation is also described, consisting of a knowledge representation ontology [based on Ranganathan’s (1967) facets] for the representation of high-level relationships in the domain and a domain ontology for the description of a particular field within the domain.

The paper shows the intrinsic difficulties found in the numerical simulation of industrial casting processes using finite element (FE) analysis. Up until now, uncoupled pure thermal simulations have been mostly considered to model solidification and cooling phenomena. However, a fully coupled thermomechanical analysis provides a more complete insight of the casting process and the final outcome regarding the quality of the part. In this type of analysis, the thermomechanical model used plays a role of paramount importance, as the problem is coupled both ways through contact between part and mould. The paper presents the full statement of the problem regarding contact, and it considers the difficulties associated with FE mesh generation and time integration strategy. It also reviews soft and hard algorithms for mechanical contact presenting some new alternatives. Evaluation of coefficients used for thermal contact is also discussed, and a new proposal is presented. Finally, some numerical applications are presented to assess the performance of the proposed strategies both in benchmark and industrial problems.

In the past year and a half, we have seen a forceful consolidation of what is called the Mobile Web. Parallel to its development, an ample number of devices (mobile telephones, PDAs, UMPCs, SmartPhones, etc) have appeared that allow users to interconnect and also access the Internet fromany place with a wireless connection. Mobility, and especially geopositioning, opens up new services and possibilities in leisure, culture, business, and work patterns. We are witnessing the beginnings of the Mobile Web, another whole new revolution for our paper world. If Gutenberg were alive, he would really be surprised.

Videoconferences, collaboration tools, or virtual meeting software have all been in use for years on the Internet and have steadily become more affordable and accessible. Nevertheless, their actual presence in organizations is still very small: technological and cultural problems remain before these tools can achieve the broad public use that could lower the price of communications and save the costs associated with travel to meetings.

We describe the activities and concerns of public library professionals with respect to the digital press, beginning with comments made by librarians themselves in the forums of different editions of a virtual course organized by the Germ.n S.nchez Ruip.rez Foundation, “La hemeroteca digital” (the digital press). After general comments about the importance of improving users’ utilization of digital press resources, various public library initiatives related to the acquisition, digitalization and dissemination of digital press are described. First, with respect to digital press acquisition, we emphasize the growing trend toward paid subscriptions. Secondly, recent digitalization experiments of interest are discussed. Finally, some dissemination examples of clipping services and web resource guides developed by public libraries are presented.

This is the second part of the analysis of the complex relationships between information technologies and information professionals in an environment in which, for the first time, standards and legislation are ahead of implementation. An example is the different interpretations on how to apply the Spanish “Law on electronic access of citizens to public services” to electronic records management. The idea that digital signatures should be preserved indefinitely with the electronic records presents an unnecessary technological complexity, when other solutions exist.

The relationship between information technologies and information professionals is becoming more complex in an environment in which, for the first time, standards and legislation are ahead of implementation and there are many hidden commercial interests. One example is the workshop on open document formats organized by the EU. Confrontation between ODF (ISO 26300) and Microsoft’s attempt to convert Ooxml into an open format through ISO was widely debated, but there was little discussion about practical solutions. Adobe’s strategy, opening its formats when free applications are in use, has proved successful.

Results show a considerable decline both in total applications and actual enrollment in library and information studies. This negative trend stands in contrast to the overall enrollment increases at Spanish universities. In addition, the fact that “Information Literacy” as a subject is not part of any of the five paths that constitute the new university education structure is discussed.

The objective is to determine the role of subject portals in the postmodern era of searching, which is characterized by the intensive use of search engines based on lynk analysis (e.g., Google). The conclusion is that subject portals have a reference and orientation role and are especially focused on the education sector (school and university students).

While recognizing the limitations of the medium, our thesis is that the Web increasingly reflects reality and where this is not the case it is due to omissions or misguided actions by web authors, which in Spain is widening the digital divide.

On invisibilities and blindness: Failures in retrieval of information from books

The difficulty of gathering information from databases not indexed by search engines is the origin of what is called the deep or invisible Internet. In bibliographic and cataloguing systems, lack of description of book contents leaves users with a kind of blindness. Search technologies are being developed that try to index and provide access to this invisible content. Bibliographic and cataloguing systems, such as ISBN, must take measures to gather and process book contents, particularly specialized texts, and make them accessible to readers. It is proposed that these systems be modified to provide gateways, using protocols similar to Z39.50, that support the capture of book chapters, summaries or synopses of literary works so that the information can be incorporated into the corresponding areas of bibliographic records in online catalogues.

This knowledge is an advantage for a website’s owner, as the site improves its position in ranking results, and for the search engines because they have access to more information about the site’s content to determinate the ranking. Websites that use search engine optimization techniques avoid the use of images without alternative text and try to link and be linked by related content sites. Good use of these search engine optimization (SEO) techniques is called “white hat SEO”; its main feature is that websites are designed with users in mind and without forgetting how search engines work. Nevertheless, web design oriented toward search engines rather than users is possible; it means websites are designed for ranking results, abusing SEO techniques to deceive search engines, such as with hidden text or small fonts, two of the most common strategies. When search engines discover these unethical techniques, called “black hat SEO”, websites are punished with poor rankings.

Starting with the concept of vaporware, we present a critical point of view about the Web Semantic Project. Both positive aspects and others that may only represent a new case of vaporware (something that diverts effort toward meeting an unrealistic objective). Afew simple recommendations are offered to avoid uncritical dissemination of official discourse about the Semantic Web that is as of yet unsubstantiated.

Opac has been in the eye of the hurricane for a number of years, evolving to provide management programs with more functionality in terms of accessibility, understood as the capacity to recover information. It is logical to imagine that this has been for the user’s benefit, but a thorough analysis reveals that the Opacs have deficiencies in that arena. They must be truly open to the user, as the backbone of information access, bibliographically or otherwise, so the user participates in his or her own growth and enrichment. Some of the weaknesses in the great majority of current catalogues are discussed, offering some paths toward the intersection between technological innovations that could be introduced and the social participation that could occur under the umbrella of the currently popular Web 2.0.

University studies of Library and Information Sciences (LIS) in Spain are experiencing a setback in the number of students enrolled. This also happens in other disciplines, but the relative newness of LIS studies may make them more vulnerable. Nonetheless, there are reasons for optimism if we evaluate the unprecedented success of Spanish research in this field. This challenge is in the hands of the teaching faculty and the entire profession in general to ensure that LIS studies are more attractive to incoming students.

This paper recovers the original spirit of the continuous crack approaches, where displacements jumps across the crack are smeared over the affected elements and the behaviour is established through a softening stress–(total) strain law, using standard finite element displacement interpolations and orthotropic localconstitutive models. The paper focuses on the problem of shear locking observed in the discrete problem when orthotropic models are used. The solution for this drawback is found in the form of a mesh corrected crack model where the structure of the inelastic strain tensor is linked to the geometry of the cracked element. The discrete model is formulated as a non-symmetric orthotropic local damage constitutive model, in which the softening modulus is regularized according to the material fracture energy and the element size. The resulting formulation is easily implemented in standard non-linear FE codes and suitable for engineering applications. Numerical examples show that the results obtained using this crack model do not suffer from dependence on the mesh directional alignment, comparing very favourably with those obtained using related standard isotropic or orthotropic damage models.

In the audiovisual field, mystery journalism has historically been considered as a smaller and disdained gender, reduced to a ridiculous situation by the lack of absolute credibility. Nevertheless, there have been exceptions: in recent years, a group of professionals have approached this kind of journalism with seriousness and passion. The present work analyzes how some of these programs have broken their historic record of audience. It gives, at the same time, the guidelines to teach the audience to distinguish between the disclosure of a junk TV, which should reject, and a rigorous informative material specific of professionals of the information.

Movies are one of the objects of study for Social Psychology because they are not only art or industry; they are a way of socialization. Therefore, movies show behaviour models, social values and norms, and make people react: movies are persuasive. A psycho-social analysis of films is necessary because movies can sometimes display prejudiced negative contents, which could be both explicit or very subtle, and therefore quite dangerous. The authors analyse ten well-known Dis-ney films from the gender perspective: How are men and women shown? What roles do they impersonate? Specifying contents and valuing subtle prejudiced stereotypes will help families to watch them from a different point of view.

The analysis of the educational function of television should not be strictly limited to the contents of the programmes, but it should also examine the way in which these contents are presented. Cartoons, as an audiovisual medium especially designed for young children, are a vehicle that conveys culture and aesthetic values. The research carried out in our Drawing Department shows there is little variety in the artistic techniques used in animation, and that speed of production is more important than the development of techniques. This article examines the results of the research and proposes alternatives which are being developed in some high-quality animation studios.

Each one is made up of different sections: television programmes database and movies; television schedule; the latest news; and Web site developments. This project tries to provide informative and communicative tools for teaching-learning television through a didactic-pedagogical, practical and critical perspective.
