Abstract

Basic requirements related to fuel injection system of upgraded turbocharged articulated truck diesel engines are listed and discussed. An example of the FIE matching approach to upgrading of a heavy duty diesel engine is presented. The application of hollow cam fuel injection pump may offer a further extension of its use in order to uprate diesel engine performance. U radu su navedeni i opisani osnovni zahtjevi s obzirom na sustav za ubrizgavanje goriva kod pojačanih turbo artikularnih Dieselovih motora teretnih vozila. Dan je primjer pristupa prilagodbi opreme za ubrizgavanje goriva radi poboljšanja Dieselovih motora za teške uvjete rada. Primjena pumpe za ubrizgavanje sa šupljom bregastom osovinom može omogućiti daljnje proširenje njene uporabe kako bi se poboljšao rad Dieselovih motora.

Abstract

The benefits of electrified powertrains for light-duty vehicles are well understood, however sufficient published information is not available on the benefits of advanced powertrains on the various types of medium and heavy duty vehicles. Quantifying the benefits of powertrain electrification will help fleet operators understand the advantages or limitations in adopting electrified powertrains in their truck fleets. Trucks vary in size and shape, as they are designed for specific applications. It is necessary to model each kind of truck separately to understand what kind of powertrain architecture will be feasible for their daily operations. This paper examines 11 types of vehicles and 5 powertrain technology choices to quantify the fuel saving potential of each design choice. This study uses the regulatory cycles proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for measuring fuel consumption. Document type: Article

Abstract

CIVINS (Civilian Institutions) Thesis document Many problems plague the United States' transportation infrastructure: congestion, poor roadway conditions, obsolescence, and maintenance cost not the least among these. In recent years, the Department of Transportation, through its Maritime Administration (MARAD), has begun a program for partial solution to this complex transportation issue. MARAD, acting on tasks assigned to it in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, has established the Marine Highways Initiative to spur development of alternative and supplemental transportation modes that utilize inland waterways and coastlines of the United States. At the same time, the U.S. Department of Defense is investigating ways to fulfill its sealift requirements, while at the same time reducing its inventory of government owned vessels that do not trade. This paper explores the issues surrounding the current state of transportation and transportation infrastructure. It also seeks to determine the feasibility of a truck ferry that would accomplish both MARAD's Marine Highway as well as the Department of Defense's sealift goals. The feasibility study examines the hypothetical business' profitability through different funding and operating scenarios. Abstract

The target cascading methodology is applied to the conceptual design of an advanced heavy tactical truck. Two levels are defined: an integrated truck model is represented at the top (vehicle) level and four independent suspension arms are represented at the lower (system) level. Necessary analysis models are developed, and design problems are formulated and solved iteratively at both levels. Hence, vehicle design variables and system specifications are determined in a consistent manner. Two different target sets and two different propulsion systems are considered. Trade-offs between conflicting targets are identified. It is demonstrated that target cascading can be useful in avoiding costly design iterations late in the product development process. Abstract

Cars, trucks and busses are more and more equipped with functions and services that drivers are supposed to operate and understand. The most important developments in this area are the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and In Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS). In order to make sure that the driver understands and appreciates (comfort) these services and traffic safety is not at risk (distraction, workload), the HMI's (Human Machine Interfaces) of all these functions should be attuned to each other, to the driver, and to the context. For attuning the functions to each other, a HMI platform is needed on which these functions are integrated. For attuning the functions to the driver it is necessary to have knowledge about the momentary state of the driver and of the intentions of the driver at a certain moment. For attuning the functions to the context, it is required to sense the relevant environmental conditions or states. This paper shows that a recent cognitive task load model from process control domain can be applied for the design of adaptive in-car user interfaces. Abstract

Within the FREVUE project 80 fully electric freight vehicles have been deployed. It showed that city logistics operations can be performed by electric freight vehicles, but that at the moment the high vehicle purchasing costs are still a barrier for large scale utilisation of electric freight vehicles for logistics operations. Only for small EFVs (lighter than 3.5 tons) a short term feasible business case is possible. For the larger vans and rigid trucks, a feasible business case is not yet possible from an operator’s perspective, often not even with subsidies.
