Abstract

The discussion about the quality of television contents, which has so strongly arisen in recent years, provides both elements for optimism and aspects that foster a sceptical position at the same time. The good intentions of improving programmes and of protecting children and youngsters, which were stated in the self-regulation rules signed in Spain in December of 2004, have come to nothing in the first months. The breaches of the code are frequent. Programme planners do not fully assume their responsibility and they blame external factors (such as the audience, the necessity of income from advertising or the lack of creativity) for the low quality of television products. It is appropriate to introduce the falsehood of such arguments on this point of the debate and to recall that television companies are the owners of the television that we consume. The possibilities of change will depend on the pressure that we, the users, are capable of exerting.

Abstract

This communication presents an analysis on the most significant elements related to the quality of the Television in present times. It examines, at the same time, the main ethical problems faced by the professionals and the users of the television, and it indicates the minimum paths required in order to achieve a good practice on television. It presents problems which should be solved as when television invents and makes programmes just because the reality does not cover their needs. Television, it adds, should be structured in order to stimulate competitively to obtain a good quality rather than to obtain good economical figures and a high audience. Therefore, the television of the XXI century which we just joined, should let it very clear which social benefits is going to give, whether it will be capable of responding to the new competitiveness and diversity in brief period of time. Whether it is going to assign qualified professionals not only in programmes for children but in all other programmes whenever required, without using supposed experts whose only interest is to fight among themselves in order to make spectacle. It should also avoid personal conflicts as a show and obviously it should avoid images of violence and psychological and vexatious misconduct.

tudy the contens of the children´s television proving that values such as individualism, egoism, violence predominate in this type of television programs. However, in words of Mariet tv shouldn´t be educative, but tv has to be enjoyable. At the moment our children´s television hasn´t got the minimus necessary stands of quality for Australian Broadcasting Authority so that the children´s television can be enjoyable. This research propuses children´s should be educative but it can´t forget the true aim tv: the entertainment.
