Abstract

High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes and ramp metering have been implemented at several places in the country to improve traffic conditions on freeways. This report presents a comprehensive study of the state of the art and state of the practice of these facilities in the U.S. and their effectiveness in improving traffic conditions on the freeway. The various types of HOV facilities have been discussed along with other system components such as park-and-ride facilities, ridership programs, enforcement areas and policies, ingress/egress facilities. The cost of several HOV facilities in the country has been presented and a set of guidelines have been prepared that may be followed for the implementation of a HOV Lane Facility. A comprehensive review of the various ramp metering facilities in the country has been presented. The components of the ramp metering system, the physical infrastructure and the various classifications of the ramp metering algorithms have been discussed. The results of a feasibility study for the implementation of these facilities on I-70 in Indianapolis, between I-65 and I-465 have also been presented.

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2013 Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2013 Bu çalışmada, ilk olarak simülasyon ve kontrol stratejilerinin temelini oluşturan trafik akım teorileri makro ölçekli olarak anlatılmıştır. Ardından hidrolik modellerden türetilen trafik değişkenleri tanıtılmış ve bunların aralarındaki ilişkiler gösterilmiştir. Trafik sıkışıklığının ana sebebi olan şok dalgaları analitik olarak incelenmiştir. Daha sonra, bu modellere yapılan ana eleştiriler ve bu modele yapılan iyileştirmeler özetlenmiştir. Çalışmanın üçüncü kısmında makro-mikro-mezo ölçekli simülasyon modelleri anlatılmış ve ardından dördüncü bölümde trafik kontrol yaklaşımları anlatılmıştır. Çalışmanın uygulama kısmında, çalışma sahası tanıtılmıştır. RTMS ten (Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor-Uzaktan Trafik Mikrodalga Algılayıcısı) veri toplama yöntemi anlatılmış ve veri metodolojisi anlatılmıştır. Bununla birlikte, mikro ölçekli simülasyon programı PTV VISSIM tanıtılarak bu programın uzunlamasına ve yanal hareket modelleri anlatılmıştır. Kalibrasyon yöntemi anlatılarak simülasyonun geçerliliği sınanmıştır. Dinamik katılım konreol yaklaşımlarında ALINEA algoritmasının özel iki durumu sınanmış ve değişken hız yönetimi yaklaşımı için dört durum önerilmiştir. Katılım kontrolü için yeşil süre değişimleri, değişken hız yönetimi uygulamaları için hız limitlerinin değişimi ve yoğunluk profilleri çizdirilmiştir. Son olarak toplam seyahat süresi, taşıt başına ortalama gecikme süreleri, taşıt başına ortalama dur kalk sayıları gibi değişik performans ölçütleri için sonuçlar değerlendirilmiştir. In this thesis, Firstly traffic flow theories are mainly introduced in macroscale which forms the basis of the most of the simulation studies and control strategies. Then relationship between the traffic variables are demonstrated and the flow theories based on the hyraulic model are analyzed and the shockwaves which are the main reason of the traffic congestion shown analytically. Thereafter, main critisism about these models are discussed and improvements are summarized. In the third section of this study macro-micro-mesoscopic simulation models are described and later in the fourth section traffic control approaches are explained. In the application part of this study, the study field is introduced. Data collection methods from RTMS (Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor) are briefly explained and the data methodology is expressed. Moreover, the microsimulation program PTV VISSIM is described and longitudinal and lateral movement models are described. Calibration method is described which demonstrates the validation of the simulation. For dynamic ramp metering approach two cases of ALINEA algorithm are proposed and for VSL approaches four cases are proposed. The fluctuations of the green time for ramp metering and the speed limits for VSL is plotted. Also density profiles for each approach is selected. At the end, results are discussed for various performance indicators such as total travel time, average delay time per vehicle, average number of stops per vehicle, etc. Yüksek Lisans M.Sc.

Abstract

Under many circumstances, when providing full bus priority methods, urban transport officials have to operate buses in mixed traffic based on their road network limitations. In the case of Istanbul's Metrobus lane, for instance, when the route comes to the pre-designed Bosphorus Bridge, it has no choice but to merge with highway mixed traffic until it gets to the other side. Much has been written on the relative success of implementing Ramp Metering (RM), for example ALINEA (&lsquo Asservissement line´ aire d&rsquo entre´ e autoroutie&rsquo ) and Variable Speed Limits (VSL), two of the most widely-used &ldquo merging congestion&rdquo management strategies, in both a separate and combined manner. However, there has been no detailed study regarding the combination of these systems in the face of high bus volume. This being the case, the ultimate goal of this study is to bridge this gap by developing and proposing a combination of VSL and RM strategies in the presence of high bus volume (VSL+ALINEA/B). The proposed model has been coded using microscopic simulation software&mdash VISSIM&mdash and its vehicle actuated programming (VAP) feature referred to as VisVAP. For current traffic conditions, the proposed model is able to improve total travel time by 9.0%, lower the number of average delays of mixed traffic and buses by 29.1% and 81.5% respectively, increase average speed by 12.7%, boost bottleneck throughout by 2.8%, and lower fuel consumption, Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions by 17.3% compared to the existing &ldquo VSL+ALINEA&rdquo model. The results of the scenario analysis confirmed that the proposed model is not only able to decrease delay times on the Metrobus system but is also able to improve the adverse effects of high bus volume when subject to adjacent mixed traffic flow along highway sections. Text in English; Abstract: English and Turkish Includes bibliographical references (leaves 70-72) xi, 72 leaves In the study, the effects of the mainline and ramp control theories on the highway traffic flow are investigate. In order to eliminate to alleviate the traffic congestion problem, which has become a problem in high-population cities, the mainline and ramp controls are considered as a solution, and control networks are emphasized. Examples of applications and results in the world are given. The applicability of the methods to be used by examining the previous studies was first examined on a general model and then on a selected highway network. In the models prepared, vehicle speeds, travel times, flow (volume) concepts, and relationships between them are mentioned. In addition, general information about highway management was also provided before. Control models were examined with the Microscopic Simulation Program, the purpose and types of models applied were compared. The traffic simulation model of the region between K-8 and K-11 on the O-2 highway from Asia to Europe has been created and the effects created by the control have been examined by applying both ramp and mainline metering. Analysis results; It has been observed that the control of ramp and mainline scenarios provides benefits compared to uncontrolled situations. Among the benefits provided; when the analysis of the basic model and mainline metering is applied, it is seen that there is an increase of 20.76% in travel times and an increase of 19.78% in vehicle speeds. Nevertheless, the implications of these control scenarios should be thoroughly investigated. Simulation results show that Ramp Metering (RM) and Mainline Metering (MM) controls can be an effective method in the management of highway-highway connections. In this regard, it is recommended that the control strategies mentioned in intensive highway-to-highway participations be tested in real life in order to increase efficiency. Yüksek nüfuslu şehirlerde bir problem haline gelen trafik tıkanıklığı sorunu, geçiş sırasında oluşan tıkanıklığın ortadan kaldırılması ya da hafifletilmesi amacıyla ana yol ve katılım kontrolleri bir çözüm olarak görülmekte olup kontrol şebekeleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Dünyadaki uygulamalar ve sonuçlarından örnekler verilmiştir. Önceki çalışmalar incelenerek kullanılacak metotların uygulanabilirliği öncelikle genel bir model üzerinde sonrasında da seçilmiş bir otoyol ağı üzerinden uygulanarak incelenmiştir. Hazırlanan modellerde yol ağı ile ilgili araç hızlarına, seyahat sürelerine, akım (hacim) kavramlarına ve aralarındaki ilişkilere değinilmiştir. Ayrıca otoyol yönetimi ile ilgili genel bilgiler de öncesinde sunulmuştur. Kontrol modelleri Mikroskobik Simülasyon Programı ile incelenmiş, amacı, uygulanan model çeşitleri kıyaslamalı olarak anlatılmıştır. Asya Avrupa yönünde O-2 otoyolunda K-8 ile K-11 arasında kalan bölgenin trafik benzetim modeli oluşturulmuş ve hem katılım hem de ana yol kontrolü uygulaması yapılarak, kontrolün yarattığı etkiler incelenmiştir. Analiz sonuçları katılım ve ana yol senaryolarının kontrolünün, kontrolsüz durumlara göre fayda sağladığı görülmüştür. Sağlanan faydalar arasında temel model ve ana yol kontrolünün uygulandığı analizler karşılaştırıldığında; ana yol kontrolünün seyahat sürelerinde % 20,76 kazanç ve araç hızlarında ki % 19,78'lik yükseliş sağladığı görülmektedir. Bununla birlikte, bahsi geçen kontrol senaryoları uygulandığında doğuracağı sonuçlar kapsamlı bir şekilde araştırılmalıdır. Yapılan simülasyon sonuçları katılım (RM) ve anayol (MM) kontrollerinin Otoyol-otoyol bağlantılarının yönetiminde etkili bir yöntem olabileceğini göstermektedir. Bu doğrultuda, verimlilik artışı sağlamak üzere yoğun otoyol-otoyol katılımlarında bahsi geçen kontrol stratejilerinin etkinliğinin gerçek hayatta da sınanması önerilmektedir.
