Abstract

ISBN 978-1-61520-791-1; The Internet is an interconnection of multiple networks called domains. Inter-domain routing is ensured by BGP which preserves each domain's independence and announces routes arbitrarily chosen by domains. BGP messages carry no information concerning quality parameters of announced routes. The authors' goal is to provide domains with information regarding the congestion state of other domains without any changes in BGP. A domain, which is aware of heavily congested domains, can choose a bypass instead of a route exhibiting possible problems with QoS satisfaction. They propose a mechanism which sends alert messages in order to notify domains about the congestion state of other domains. The major difficulty consists in avoiding flooding the Internet with signaling messages. The authors' solution limits the number of alerts by taking advantage of the hierarchical structure of the Internet set by P2C and P2P relationships. Their algorithm is distributed and heuristic because it is a solution to an NP-complete and inapproximable problem. They prove these properties by reducing the Steiner problem in directed acyclic graphs to our problem of alert diffusion. The simulations show that our mechanism significantly diminishes the number of unavailable domains and routes compared to those obtained with BGP routing and with a theoretical centralized mechanism.

Abstract

The thesis includes the study of several variational problems involving both transport costs and concentration criteria. Some problems are given by the minimization of functional defined on the marginal measures of a transport problem, requiring one to be concentrated, the other diffuse and the two of them close to each other in a transportation sense. This is what is mainly developed in Chapters 1-3. Other chapters are devoted to different models of transportation which involve, in the definition of the cost, sort of concentration criteria about the path particles follow along the transport, giving raise to congestion or branching effects. Several problems are defined on one-dimensional structures (networks, rectifiable supports of vector measures, length constrained sets...) and their regularity, at a blow-up level, is discussed in the last two chapters. The models come in most cases from applications to urban planning, biology (tree, leaves and blood system), geophysics (river basins) and fluid mechanics. the thesis has been written under the supervision of Prof. G. Buttazzo and defended in December at SNS, Pisa; Plusieurs problèmes d'optimisation liés à la théorie du transport optimal, concernant aussi des critères de concentration, sont étudiés. Il s'agit, pour ce qui est des primiers chapitres, de la minimization de fonctionnelles definies sur les mesures marginales du porblème de transport, en demandant que l'une soit concentrée et l'autre diffusée, alors que les deux doivent être proche au sense du transport de masse. D'autres chapitres portent sur des modèles différentes qui considèrent la concentration des parcours suivis par les particules lors du mouvement, en donnant des effets de congestion ou branchement. Plusieurs problèmes font apparaître des structures de dimension 1 (reseaux, supports rectifiables de mesures vectorielles, ensemble sous contraintes de longueur...) et leur régularité (blow-up) est étudiée dans les deux derniers chapitres. Les modèles viennent dans la majorité des cas de possibles applications à la planification urbaine, la biologie (arbres, feuilles et système sanguin), la géophysique (bassins fluviaux) et la mécanique des fluides. La thèse a été écrite sous la direction du Prof. Buttazzo et soutenue à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure de Pise.

Abstract

In a time span of twenty years, container transport by barge has acquired a significant share in the hinterland modal split for containers of the load centres Rotterdam and Antwerp. In other European load centres, barge container transport as yet plays a modest role, but the interest in the barge option is growing. The growth in container volumes by barge and the increase of the number of seaports and inland terminals involved go hand in hand with fundamental spatial developments in the European inland terminal network.This paper addresses the organisational changes in the European barging industry that have taken place in the last twenty years and its impact on the spatial dynamics in the European container barge network. The paper analyses structural changes in liner service schedules by barge and the changing functional interdependencies between inland terminals in the network and organizational changes in the industry. The paper will conclude by discussing future perspectives for the spatial development of the barging network. Depuis les vingt dernières années, le transport conteneurisé par barges a connu une augmentation de part modale significative, des centres logistiques de Rotterdam et Anvers vers leurs arrière-pays. Malgré un intérêt croissant, la part du transport conteneurisé par barge demeure modeste dans les autres centres logistiques européens. L’augmentation du volume conteneurisé transporté par barges, ainsi que le nombre croissant de ports et terminaux intérieurs vont de pair avec les transformations spatiales fondamentales du réseau portuaire intérieur européen. Cet article aborde les changements organisationnels qui ont cours depuis les vingt dernières années dans l’industrie du transport conteneurisé par barges et leurs impacts sur les dynamiques spatiales dans les réseaux maritimes intérieurs européens. L’article analyse les changements structuraux dans les horaires des transporteurs par barges ainsi que les interdépendances fonctionnelles entre les réseaux de terminaux intérieurs européens et les changements organisationnels de l’industrie maritime. L’article conclut par une discussion sur les perspectives futures du développement spatial du réseau de transport maritime intérieur européen par barges.
