Abstract

Design for Environment (DfE) promotes the systematic consideration of environmental aspects during product design and development. Despite the maturity of concepts and tools in literature, efficient implementation in industries is reported to be low. A need to bridge this gap is identified with studies that look on DfE practices as well as the use and potential of DfE tools. This thesis is part of a research project that investigates DfE practices and the use of tools during vehicle design and development. The aim is to investigate the ways that environmental constraints can be efficiently integrated into product development processes thus assist in improving the environmental performance of products from a life cycle perspective. The scope of the study includes four vehicle manufacturing companies in Sweden. The development and utilization of tools has been also investigated aiming to increase the opportunities for effective use within this product category. Case study methodology, research interviews and literature reviews constitute the research strategy followed in this work. The empirical results presented in this thesis indicated that vehicle manufacturing companies in Sweden are continually working to improve the environmental performance of their products and meet legal and costumer demands. Despite similarities regarding the type of environmental requirements considered, the companies studied have adopted different ways to identify and integrate environmental requirements into their product development process and use DfE tools to different extents. Such variations reflect differences in the success and maturity levels of the DfE practices adopted. A need for increased and more systematic use of tools is identified for all studied companies and especially for analytical tools. Results from the literature review showed that a variety of tools are available that have the potential to support vehicle design processes. However, only a few cover a broad set of aspects identified to be relevant from a vehicle design perspective. For DfE tools to become effective and be used during product development, they need to cover aspects that are relevant for the company and product designers. While ‘the sharing economy’ is widely promoted as one of the most promising solutions to changing lifestyles in the field of mobility, huge uncertainty still exists regarding which future vehicle-sharing concepts should be developed to meet the very wide range of specific, individual needs. To reduce this uncertainty, new approaches are established and evaluated to integrate the perspective of different customer groups into the innovation process directly and continuously. One very promising approach in this context is ‘co-creation’."br" This paper presents both the methodology and the results of its application, developed in the co-creation project “ProVIL – product development with future users in a virtual idea laboratory” conducted in 2017 with a group of Mechanical Engineering Master’s students focusing on the development of vehicle-sharing concepts for future users. To ensure relevance and quality of their concepts, the students used a wide range of existing and new innovation procedures, which were evaluated during the project in the sense of empirical Live-Lab studies.

Abstract

The aeronautical industry has always been known for having high investment costs concerning capital, personnel, time and technology as it engages in the process of developing new products. The strong competition in the air transport market has been putting pressure on the manufacturers to build new aircraft models in a range of products which assists the specific needs of each segment of the market, that is, always more customized products. The integrated development of products through risk partnership has been used by some industries aiming to minimize the investments mentioned above, as well as to reduce the cycle of products development, what results in reduction of time to market. This work aims to analyze, considering various models of competitiviness, how the Brazilian aeronautical industry is making the integrated development with risk partnerships a real distinguishing feature in the market. A indústria aeronáutica sempre se caracterizou por possui altos custos de investimentos em capital, pessoal, tempo e tecnologia no processo de desenvolvimento de novos produtos. A forte concorrência no mercado de transporte aéreo tem pressionado os fabricantes na construção de novos modelos de aeronaves dentro de um espectro de produtos que atendam as necessidades especificas de cada segmento do mercado, ou seja produtos cada vez mais customizados. O uso do desenvolvimento integrado de produtos através de parcerias de risco tem sido usado por algumas industrias com o objetivo de minimizar os investimentos acima citados, assim como redução do ciclo de desenvolvimento de produtos, tendo como conseqüência a redução do time to market. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar, a partir de diversos modelos de competitividade, como a industria aeronáutica brasileira esta fazendo uso do desenvolvimento integrado de produtos com parceiras de riscos efetivamente ser um diferencial no mercado.
