Models supported by ICT tools are developed to raise collaboration and share of resources in urban logistics process, in a kind of "Logistics-as-uber" concept, which allows implementing operations such as “GoodsPooling” con-cept, equivalent to carpooling concept: daily use of home/work trips to pick and deliver goods on the way. This solution can also be integrated with the use of Taxis or even persons in a public transportation in a sharing solution of persons and goods transportation. Abstract

Part 12: Agrifood Supply Chains; International audience; Reducing post-harvest losses in the grain production system are of great interest to Brazilian agricultural production. Truck transport is commonly used world wide for the distribution of goods for trade. In Brazil, truck transportation is usually the most economical way to distribute goods in places where inexpensive or natural means of transport alternatives are not available. Truck transport plays a significant role in moving raw materials and processed products from the agricultural production. This study aimed to evaluate the post-harvest loss in transportation in soybean in the state of Piaui. The route of trucks loaded with soybean was analyzed from two regions. The trucks were weighted when leaving the farm and again weighted when arriving at the processing plant. Results indicate that there was a difference in weight between the farm and final destination indicating possible losses during the road transport. Document type: Part of book or chapter of book

Abstract

This document provides the AEOLIX impact assessment of living labs at the operational level. It is based on three main impacts namely business, environment, and socio-economic impacts. The three impacts are sub-divided further into sub-categories. The report collects data from twelve living labs involved in with AEOLIX. One of the main goals of AEOLIX was to reduce the costs for various logistics activities as implemented in twelve living labs. The expected benefits in the business area are from reducing the consumption of different resources, reducing the time used for various activities, and from increasing the productivity in certain areas. The economic or business benefits came along two dimensions: (i) in terms of time and (ii) in terms of money. In terms of time, AEOLIX facilitated reducing the time spent on various activities at the companies. In terms of money, AEOLIX helped to save the costs of specific logistics activities within the living lab. For the environmental aspect an overall value of 20% was set as target value for reduction in CO2 emission using AEOLIX. Only one of all living labs reached this target value, but there was anyhow a reduction found in all living labs. AEOLIX and its functions have also helped in reducing noise pollution at some of the living labs. In some cases, there was quite a considerable reduction. For the socio-economic aspects the job creation, SME empowerment, and the improved quality of life are addressed. This study has explored the impact of AEOLIX on job creation in terms of drivers’ and operators’ jobs. Since the AEOLIX implementation is still in its initial phases, respondents were unable to estimate how many jobs (drivers and/or operators) were created in the long run. SME Empowerment was measured as the increase in SMEs’ market share and the increase in direct collaboration between SMEs and large organizations. The results were meager both with regard to the market share and the extent of collaboration. The improved quality of life is measured in the way AEOLIX puts more focus on work, the less stress at work and a positive attitude towards people using it. The results reflect that AEOLIX has greatly helped employees to put more focus on work and to reduce stress levels. Managers consider this as a positive side of the return on investment (ROI) as the business processes are improved. AEOLIX impact on various socio-economic aspects is in principle positive but as this process is very slow to emerge it takes time to observe any changes in social aspects. Acceptance and trust on AEOLIX can be captured as a majority of the evaluation managers of the living labs found the AEOLIX functions (dashboard, connectivity engine and toolkit) useful to a great extent. The willingness to continue using AEOLIX functions and their usefulness are directly related to each other. This means that the more useful a function is, the more users are willing to continue using it. The AEOLIX platform, through various services and functions, has a positive impact on society in general and on workers in particular. Although this impact cannot be evaluated financially for the first year of the AEOLIX implementation, numerous studies show that a more satisfying and less stressful job, together with a more welcoming and stimulating environment, have an important economic impact in the long-term period. Therefore, the fact that AEOLIX has a positive impact on society will also prove to be an economic benefit for the different companies.

Abstract

Optimizing city logistics is a topic of great importance for big cities today. Even though the environmental- and economical consequences of the increasing goods transportation fleet has been present for quite some time, actions from affected stakeholders has not been taken until just recently.  In this brief 9 week project the aim has been to,  from a design point-of-view, in this complex topic, give a suggestion and raise a discussion onto how goods transportation in cities can be made in the future.  The basic idea is to get the consignments as close to the consignees and their travel patterns as possible. Public transportation networks are an existing grid where people are moving around and can potentially be used for combined transport of goods and people. The outcome of this concept is focusing on light parcel delivery towards private consignees, due to the increasing e-commerce trend. By using small transporter vehicles connected to buses, light parcels can be distributed throughout a city and easily accessible for consignees at the bus stops.  The transporter vehicle developed through this project aims to conceptualize connectivity and integration between mobility and parcel delivery services, to ease the every day life of urban citizens as well as decrease the environmental- and economical impacts which the distribution vehicle-fleet of today entails.  The design of the transporter vehicle is an interpretation of how a autonomous distribution vehicle can look like in a future city environment where the integration of public-utility-vehicles is of greater importance.

Abstract

Standardization of emission calculation is progressing swiftly in order to support the improvement of the sustainability of transport chains. Using the GLEC Framework v1.0 as a starting point, this research maps out, which further gaps need to be addressed for ensuring seamless coverage at a meaningful accuracy of such a calculation. The analysis is based on a desk research complemented by considerations and feedback received in the context of real-life test cases of the GLEC Framework. The paper closes with an outlook on requirements towards an eco-label related to the emission calculation standardization.

Abstract

The paper deals with the use of bicycle messengers, also called bike couriers, in the modern logistics chain. In an era where almost every actor - from policy makers to senior managers - is thinking about the environment and sustainability, new innovative concepts are developed worldwide. On the other hand, an abundance of solutions to improve efficiency and overall sustainability of logistics and other related business activities are already available in the market. Reinventing the wheel all over again might not be necessary. One of the methods to deliver parcels in a more sustainable way, is the transport of freight by bike. People on bike deliver and transport post, parcels or freight with a low volume or weight. Bike couriers are proven to be fast and reliable within congested urban areas. These bikers mainly advertised their ability to go fast from one place to another in a city. Sustainability was a selling argument, but speed was of more importance. Also, in Europe some bike courier markets are reasonably well developed. Specific markets seem to exist for transport of freight by bike. The research question of this paper concerning bicycle messengers is whether these companies can be an economic viable alternative for fossil fuel powered transport, and if so, in what markets these opportunities can be found. The authors draw conclusions about the business model and integrate encountered weaknesses and opportunities. An operational cost calculation is included. A simulation of a round trip delivery scheme in an urban area took place. A van as well as a bike courier solution was compared. To draw some conclusions about the economic feasibility of the round trip by bike courier, the cost per stop is compared and will be discussed. Abstract

Logistics is becoming a fast-growing industry with an endless amount of logistics projects. We find such a definition just with Polish authors. Domestic and other authors do not use the concept of logistics projects, but we find in the specific literature terms such as city logistics project, urban logistics project, or reverse logistics project. These concepts are about projects which focus on logistics in the cities than in the total concept of logistics projects. The paper will deal with the idea of logistics projects regarding business firms in the Czech Republic. The main objective of the paper is defining logistics projects. © 2019 The Authors. "The present work shows the results of a study that evaluated the overnight operation, using the modeling of air operations where simulation emerges as a tool, consistent with the objective of the organization to achieve better results. The old paradigms air transport issues have worn the new information systems and the need to compensate for supply capacity with demand. Some aviation sector organizations have felt the need to modify their strategic schemes. It is not enough to be part of the market and wait for the opportunities, now, which runs the changes and is innovative in their practices, achieves superior performance in the market. Because of these constant changes, organizations have had to adapt, as in the case of this particular airline, under higher demand stimulated and most comfortable travel plans and innovative, the operations involved in this value chain become more critical, since in the same chain, feels greater dependence and demand in the various logistics operations related to the provision of air service. When viewing this critical chain, there is a need to assess, innovate and improve the most important aspects in the operation."
