Abstract

Two closely related aspects of the information and documentation sector -university education and labour market- are discussed. We consider the equivalencies and transferability of previous courses and degrees for credit towards the Information and Documentation degree, and some possible effects of the new three-year degrees. In relation to the labour market in our sector, we discuss the opacity of our contribution to the digital content economy. Summarized in tables, the most striking results of our analysis of employment and unemployment rates and types of job openings posted in information and documentation in 2014 are presented and discussed.

Abstract

Analysis of the status of the professions of librarian, documentalist and information scientis tin Spain, studying the influence of the curriculum in the labour market. Forty percent of employers believe that graduates should have more knowledge about specific sources of information: legal, economic, health, education, etc. The profession and its programme of studies are poorly understood by society, and the terminological inconsistency between degree titles, the field of knowledge and professional institutions contributes to this problem. The number of graduates in Spain reached its maximum in 2005 (1,727) and this amount has steadily declined, to 667 in 2012.

The main trends observed in the library and information science labour market and university education in 2012 have a general tone of survival with resignation. The economic crisis has caused many layoffs and left libraries without funds. New documents on professional ethics are mentioned. In the labour market, there is employment loss in the public sector. The decline in university enrolments that started in 2002 seems to have stopped and there has been a slight recovery with the new graduate title

The strong impact of the economic crisis is discussed: unfortunately many newspapers have had to reduce staff, and a large number of journalists have been dismissed. The consequences of the general transition from paper to digital, and the new internet developments that day by day gain more audience and attract advertising are described. Statistics are provided.

Abstract

A review of various reports and studies reveals the most important aspects and events in 2014 of the library and information science (LIS) profession and academic programs. The economic crisis in Spain has continued to hit hard, although to a lesser extent. In this environment, a general major concern is to demonstrate the social benefits delivered by libraries. The profession is becoming more hybridized with other professional sectors. As for university education, we note a slight improvement in the statistical data, but also an outrageous structural reform of university cycles by the Spanish Ministry of Education. There has also been an unfair tightening of accreditation agency requirements for the approval of six-year research periods for academic researchers in LIS.

The explosion of social web platforms has triggered the emergence of a new professional profile called community manager.The opportunities for graduates in library sciences to have access to these jobs are analyzed, taking into account the skills demanded in the current job offers and how Spanish universities have integrated them in their curricula.

A study was designed to determine how the degree programs in Information and library science available in 2000-2005 at the public universities of Madrid fit the labour market needs of their students. The methodology used was the development of a questionnaire addressed to graduates. Although the number of surveys completed is not high (118), the authors believe that the results obtained permit a series of conclusions that may be extrapolated to the entire cohort.

Abstract

The article presents the results of a survey on working life, answered by 183 graduates in Information Science studies of the Universidad de Zaragoza, between the years 1992 and 2006. The results can be summarized in that these professionals improve their academic results with respect to other previous studies due to their motivation throughout the studies. The expectations for job access of these graduates have been fulfilled in most of the cases, and they spent an average of thirteen months looking for a job. A great part of these workers are employed in specific functions of Information Science. Nevertheless, most of them don’t belong to any Professional Association of Information Sciences. In spite of this, we can conclude that these studies must be better known in order to show everybody what opportunities are available to these professionals.

The paper explores the significance of human potentials management in micro and macro transport systems and investigates to what extent do the human potentials represent the factor of growth and development of transport systems. The facts gathered in this paper should represent the quantitative starting points for viewing the specifics of transport service productions and future movements on the transport labour market, and the possibilities of information technologies implementation in transport human potentials management optimizations, all with the aim of producing new and of improving the inherited comparative advantages of the Croatian transport systems. Temeljni cilj ove znanstvene rasprave jest istražiti značenje upravljanja ljudskim potencijalima u mikro i makro prometnim sustavima, odnosno mogu li i u kojoj mjeri ljudski potencijali biti čimbenikom rasta i razvoja prometnih sustava. Dobivene spoznaje u ovoj znanstvenoj raspravi trebaju predstavljati kvalitetna polazišta za sagledavanje specifičnosti proizvodnje prometnih usluga i budućih kretanja na prometnome tržištu rada, te mogućnosti implementacije informacijskih tehnologija u optimalizaciji upravljanja ljudskim potencijalima u prometu, a sve s ciljem proizvođenja novih i oplemenjivanja naslijeđenih komparativnih prednosti hrvatskoga prometnoga sustava.
