Abstract

Based on theoretical and methodological orientations from authors’ previous research on media and generations, this article presents a research and learning process involving supervised field work conducted by graduate students from a Master Seminar on Media Studies at FCSH, New University of Lisbon. Acting as facilitators of focus groups composed of older participants, exploring intergenerational and intragenerational differences and similarities that emerge from different age cohorts, and critically reflecting on this experience on their individual essays, students were able to build a contextual knowledge of media uses among their grandparents’ and parents’ generation in Portugal. The choice of focus groups as a tool for research and the topic of generations to be investigated within Media Studies proved to be very productive. The article argues on the potentialities of this intergenerational relation between facilitator and focus groups’ respondents as a way of activating the interactions inside the groups, leading –for instance– the participants to assume an «explaining» attitude in selfaccounting. Final notes are presented about the educational gains of this methodology for Media Education and for different branches of Media Studies, such as media and social history, journalism and the news or political participation.

Abstract\r This chapter summarizes some of the results from the Working Group “National Travel Surveys” in COST Action 355. All 50 presentations could not be reviewed here; thus, we focus on three crucial topics: \r \r the periodicity of data collection, but also its longitudinal aspects (advantages of continuous surveying, repeated cross-sections vs. panel surveys, etc.),\r \r \r new technologies for improving the efficiency and accuracy of mobility surveys (computer-assisted telephone, Web-based, interviews, GPS, GSM, RDS, etc.),\r \r \r innovative approaches, exemplified by qualitative surveys combined with conventional quantitative ones, and by biographical approaches. Abstract

Meeting the need for qualified staff in the field of air traffic control depends primarily on selection of appropriate candidates among many applicants. The selection of competent air traffic controllers, who play a vital role in the air traffic system, is of critical importance and is usually conducted through multi-stage examinations. It is also important to use correct methods in the selection process in order to identify the most suitable candidates. In particular, the application of subjective examinations, such as interviews in a standard way, and determination and standardization of criteria can assist in selecting the right candidates. Within this context, the student selection process in an air traffic control department is investigated, with the aim of supporting the interview examination through the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The criteria weighting is determined by expert opinion. Thirty-nine candidates are ranked according to the AHP, with the current and proposed rankings being compared. As a result, the ranking has changed significantly with the proposed approach.
