Abstract

The gestation and consolidation of feminist activism that has brought together thousands of communication professionals in Spain, following the strike called on March 8, 2018 are analyzed. United through the Telegram messaging application and through the hashtag #lasperiodistasparamos on Twitter, a speech analysis of the 13,163 tweets published with this label, from February to September 2018, has been carried out. The content of the conversations on their Telegram channel has also been analyzed as well as the opinions formulated in in-depth interviews with 20 activists of this cyber community. Through a quantitative and qualitative methodology applied to categories extracted in the speeches, the causes of this activism, the effectiveness of its channels of organization and communication and the initiatives derived in the urban space have been observed. In conclusion, this pioneering awareness of union between Spanish communication professionals has been motivated by the crisis of capitalism and by a new global, technological and intergenerational feminist wave. This activism has managed for the first time to cover feminism from the mass media and has added to the protest women of different ages, ideologies and professions. In addition, it has resulted in the constitution of various organizations and associations of journalism professionals, smaller networks with the ability to decide and act for feminism within the urban space in regional areas. Especially they work for deontological awareness for the gender perspective in journalistic production.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to show the results derived from a sample of students who were enrolled in different bachelor degree programs offered by the University of Sonora in Mexico. There was a double objective for this study. First, to identify cyber activist students through the answers gathered through a questionnaire taken electronically using as inclusion criteria the presence of high and medium levels of participation and commitment in different actions undertaken in four topic areas (environment, academic, social and citizen issues, and human rights). As a second objective, and after selecting three unique cases of cyber activist students, inflexion points were determined in the activities performed by these youngsters in digital social networks. Using personal narrative as a methodological strategy, the students described how they interact with others through different digital networks. Among the first categories identified in the indepth interviews are: interaction history (use, access and availability of technology at a young age), and active participation about topics of interest in social networks (organization and the perceptions of achievements made). As main findings, there are the availability of these resources from a young age, personal motivation in participating in diverse topics, enjoyment of expressing one’s opinion freely, electronic participation as a way to commit to a cause, and not joining an organization while participating.

Abstract

This paper contributes to the analysis of the role that social networks play in civic, social mobilization and solidarity of Spanish young people, considering whether social networks are responsible for active social commitment off-line or if they just intensify an existing or previous tendency towards social participation. This research was undertaken by on-line questionnaire –Likert scale and multiple choice questions– in collaboration with the Spanish social network Tuenti where more than 1,300 young people took part. The results show significant percentages of participation exclusively on-line although there were more than 80% of young people, in a way or another, involved in actions to which they were called by social networks. The study analyzes the forms of participation in solidarity actions and the influence of factors such as geographical, social or emotional proximity to causes on the degree of participation on-line and off-line. The article shows that social networks have changed the meaning of participation. They are encouraging young people not mobilized away from social networks, to take action, so it proposes in its conclusions the need to overcome the dichotomy that opposes on-line and off-line activism and passivity.

Abstract

Digital media are present in all areas of society, even configured as a new space for political socialization. This is especially applicable in the case of young people due to their high use of new technologies, as they are also trained with the necessary skills to do so. In this context, social networks have prompted the emergence of a new type of political participation: which takes place online. Therefore, this study delves into the relationship between the socialization that occurs in the network, digital skills and political participation online and offline. A quantitative survey-based methodology was used with university students from three Ibero-American countries: Mexico, Spain and Chile. The fieldwork was conducted between the months of December 2017 and June 2018. The results obtained show that young people consume mainly digital media, which does not prevent them from being critical with the quality they deserve. In this sense, the political participation actions in which they are involved are mostly developed in the network, thus participating to a lesser extent offline. Therefore, young people enter the world of politics through the consumption of information on the Internet, which favors a subsequent online political participation.
