Abstract

The digitization process applied to the construction sector seems to be articulated through the "Building Information Modeling" (BIM), which, as is well known, includes not only the three-dimensional (3D) representation of the works, but its many other dimensions, such as temporal information, budget, sustainability, services, etc. The BIM, as a technology, process and ecosystem, is effectively offering solutions for the entire life cycle of a project, in its design, execution and operation phases, and for all the agents linked to it, that is, for all the professionals of the construction sector without exception.

The BIMtable concept is born from considering that it is precisely the construction, the most complex environment - changing and severe - the most interesting scenario to incorporate the novelties offered by the BIM, as well as all the technologies that complement it, to achieve the digitalization of the construction in its broadest sense. It is at the work site where real-time monitoring of its progress can be made, using sensors, IoT, cameras or the information provided by the workers themselves. It is in the construction where the different professionals need to access the information of the project, as it has been developed and modeled, to follow and execute the instructions of the architect.

Abstract

In November 2019, the Lara State Construction Camera promoted two activities related to the introduction of Building Information Modeling BIM methodology. The first one, the workshop “BIM Three letters that will transform the construction industry”. The second one with the conference "BIM the methodology that changes the professional DNA of engineers, architects and builders" with very good acceptance by professionals related to the construction area of the State. These activities aim to sow interest in the academia, engineers, architects, urban planners and builders, in adapting to the advances that are being presented in the sector, in the search to be much more competitive and to be on par with the professionals of others countries.

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to analyze practical aspects with use of 3D Model for accurate building condition assessment. Use of fully interactive visualization methods from a technical condition assessment platform going to be, especially taking into consideration current COVID-19 scenarios, a very supportive tool for the massive inspection of building stocks, particularly in big residential areas. The authors present the approach based on high-performance images that were captured by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The next step is the generation of a 3D model and orthophotos of building facades. The graphical information together with tables of attributes will allow the interactive geo-referenced management and assessment, that is proposed as a form of interactive cooperation. The idea of this approach corresponds widely with the Building Information Modeling aims. The authors introduce the methodology, stages of the inventory and follow-up process carried out within the platform requirements together with advantages of the visualization techniques, basing on a particular case study. Technical details about the information system and the analysis connected with the visualization utility will be presented and illustrated.

The architecture, engineering, construction and operation industry has high accident rates, and its workers are susceptible to certain risks due to the variability of their worksites, the tasks they perform and the equipment they use. Of particular interest is the coexistence of workers and heavy machinery in the same space, which is one of the main causes of high accident rates. Increasing digitisation also incorporates the use of new systems (e.g. UAVs, autonomous vehicles, robotic devices), which must function while preserving worker safety. As such, worker training is also essential in these contexts. Research indicates that occupational risk prevention training in construction is not satisfactory. Traditional methods based on lectures (where the student does not take an active role) and traditional test-type assessments do not result in significant learning and fail to create a culture of prevention among workers. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the construction industry has had to incorporate new prevention measures to continue projects while protecting workers’ health and safety. Virtual reality has demonstrated advantages in adapting to different contexts, allowing for the agile development of training experiences with immersive characteristics and more significant learning than traditional methods. This research shows the application and agile development of a training experience for social distancing at construction sites to prevent COVID-19 transmission, based on virtual reality and building information modelling and using serious games as a teaching strategy.

Cities have become much more complex, and public agencies are facing increasing challenges to provide efficient and inclusive services to the community. Cities are highly dependent on civil infrastructure and the technologies adopted for the management of public services including transportation, energy, security, water resources, first aid, and supply chain systems. The Smart City concept is interdisciplinary in nature and represents a new way of managing civil infrastructure by identifying problems with the support of advanced technologies. Within this concept, it is necessary to model various scenarios and analyze potential outcomes to seek the best solution for the situations raised. However, the technological components are insufficient by themselves if they do not allow interaction among the parties involved in the management process. In this context, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a tool that can improve collaboration and communication among the parties involved in the management of civil infrastructure in a city. This article describes a humanistic concept of a Smart City with emphasis on the quality of life and the role of education in its development and sustainability, integrating modern technology for an efficient interaction of health, transportation, public safety, energy, building management subsystems, among others. These interconnected subsystems must provide the services to sustain the quality of life of citizens. In this humanistic approach, practice of civic values has a fundamental role in the responsible use of resources and technological tools to transform a city into a smart one.
