Abstract

[EN] This paper is dedicated to the structure of airline networks as a sink of efficient airline operations. Parameters of complexity were derived and mirrored on level of service as well as efficiency parameters. Airlines usually considerers an operational overhead to predict the total flight operation cost. This parameter includes the expected cost for disruptions and delays. When an airline has to mobilize an aircraft in a base for recovering the service or for breaking an emergent dynamic, then it is running extra costs. The cost of managing complexity in the airline industry has a direct impact on profit and loss account. Therefore, this paper presents an integrated approach to evaluate this cost, based on padding and aircrafts dedicated to recover disruptions. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effects (e.g. changes of power and processes) of the e-freight initiative introduced by IATA on the air freight supply chain network by focusing on two specific cases within the U.S. and Chinese market. After identifying two representative cases (cross sectional), data was gathered using semi- structured interviews, additional data provided by the participants, as well as secondary data, such as annual reports and case studies. The findings are analyzed using key words and suitable categories. A power model based on the current situation of the air freight supply chain is developed by analyzing the circumstances while implementing e-AWB/e-freight. This model can be used to add to the existing gap within the present literature framework. Further, changes regarding the supply chain network, especially processes and information flow were identified. Lastly, mainly positive (e.g. increased sustainability of the transportation process) as well as some negative effects (e.g. investments of the dual process) are mentioned in a de- tailed manner. Limitations of the study include a research population of two major actors of the air freight supply chain network, as well as a theoretical framework primarily based on literature and the fact that the study focuses on a cross sectional time period. Future research would include an analysis of all involved actors, while including IATA as the trade association, of the air freight supply chain, and especially issues related to customs procedures. Also, a longitudinal study, a more in depth analysis of the power distribution and any related changes should be of interest. 

Abstract

We study cooperation between the airline and high-speed rail (HSR) sectors by formulating their joint profit as a maximization problem using a multinomial logit choice model in a three-node setting. We allow the non-purchase option as an outside option available to consumers. The demand for each choice is not only a function of the price but also the service quality, such as the total trip time, frequency of service, and ease of connecting from the hub to a nearby HSR station. As a result, the following findings are presented. First, regardless of the service quality of either sector and the non-purchase option, cooperation decreases the total volume of the domestic market of a country. Second, when the attractiveness of the outside option is high, the HSR and air sectors can prevent a large reduction in the total volume by cooperation in the connecting market. However, this is not the case in the domestic market. Third, if the non-purchase quality in the domestic market is high, then cooperation increases the social welfare of the whole market. If the non-purchase quality is low, then cooperation increases the welfare of the whole market only in cases where the number of potential customers in the connecting market is relatively large. We also show the effect of improving air–rail service quality on each market share and on the total profit. Document type: Article
