Abstract

Mobility is the driving force of a radical transformation of society and of our lives, and the emergence of smartphones and tablets has been a turning point. This transformation is mainly articulated around five technological ecosystems, each composed of an operating system, social networks, applications, standards and hardware devices. These ecosystems are the World Wide Web, the social network Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Apple. Only the Web is open; the rest are captives of the companies that are developing them. With the advent of mobility and permanently connected devices such as augmented reality glasses, and the emergence of new digital surfaces in everyday environments such as stores or underground stations, we must try to open the ecosystems to free us from the captive platforms and enable us to build a real life and digital identity independent of that or those with which we work. In this process the Web and W3C standards should once again resume their role as champions.

Abstract

Mashups are a new kind of interactive Web application, built out of the composition of two or more existing Web service APIs and data sources. Whereas "pure" mashups are built relying entirely on the Web browser as a platform for integration at the presentation layer, this approach is not always feasible and part of the mashup integration logic must be deployed on the Web server instead. In the case study presented in this paper, we explore a novel approach to build mashups out of heterogeneous sources of streaming data. In particular, we introduce a layered mashup architecture, with a clear separation between the mashup user interface and the mashup integration logic run by a mashup engine. To do so, we show how to build a mashup application that displays in real time the location of visitors connecting to a Website. The integration logic feeding a map widget by processing the Web site logs is developed using a data flow model that connects a set of reusable and heterogeneous components into a data processing pipeline. We conduct a brief performance evaluation of the mashup showing that the pipeline introduces minimal delay and discuss several extensions of the mashup. Abstract

We propose a model for the behaviour of Web apps in the unreliable WWW. Web apps are described by orchestrations. An orchestration mimics the personal use of the Web by defining the way in which Web services are invoked. The WWW is unreliable as poorly maintained Web sites are prone to fail. We model this source of unreliability trough a probabilistic approach. We assume that each site has a probability to fail. Another source of uncertainty is the traffic congestion. This can be observed as a non-deterministic behaviour induced by the variability in the response times. We model non-determinism by imprecise probabilities. We develop here an ex-ante normal to characterize the behaviour of finite orchestrations in the unreliable Web. We show the existence of a normal form under such semantics for orchestrations using asymmetric parallelism. Document type: Part of book or chapter of book

Abstract

Part 5: Co-design Studies; International audience; To enhance the desirability of public transportation, it is important to design for positive travel experience. The context of bus transportation has broad potential for utilization of novel, supplementary digital services beyond travel information. The aim of our research was to study bus passengers’ needs and expectations for future digital services and to develop initial service concept ideas through co-design. To this end, three Idea generating workshops with 24 participants were arranged. Our findings reveal six service themes that can be used as a basis of designing future digital traveling services: (1) Information at a glance while traveling, (2) Entertainment and entertaining activities, (3) Services that support social interaction, (4) Multiple channels to provide travel information, (5) Extra services for better travel experience, and (6) Services that people already expect to have. Abstract

This chapter addresses the challenges that changing technologies pose to urban planning. Urban planning continues to be influenced by an emerging creativity and knowledge-sharing culture that has an inherent connection to digital transformation. Technology certainly plays an important role in the production of content and its distribution. Such a transformation is giving urban planning a new look, which is depicted in the concepts of Urban Planning 2.0 and Urban Planning 3.0. In this chapter, this paradigm shift is explained and illustrated with a special view to identifying the ways these second and third generations of the Web affect urban planning. There is a plethora of pilot projects and new practices in Urban Planning 2.0, even if experiences as a whole are so few and far between, which makes it difficult to assess both the best practices in this field and the long-term impacts of their application. Recent developments associated with the applications of Web 3.0 and related technology trends in urban planning, which are designed to bring intelligence into planning, have hardly seen daylight due to both technological and socio-technical challenges associated with them. In brief, in the case of Web 2.0, we know on the basis of our initial experiences by and large how it may support urban planning; however, in the case of Web 3.0, technological uncertainties and systemic dimension of related applications make the concept more ambiguous and thus more challenging to assess what the true potential of this emerging Web trend is from the point of view of urban planning. Vista con ojos de hoy, en la propuesta fundacional de la World Wide Web se puede ver que sus objetivos son una realidad. Pero también se puede ver que esos mismos objetivos son, en ciertos contextos, una esperanza que no llega, o una víctima del mal uso. Eso explica que recientemente, su mismo autor, haya propuesto un Contrato para la Web (https://contractfortheweb.org/es) en el que se enuncian nueve principios para que la información llegue a todas las manos, sin excepción, y llegue válida, y sea un instrumento para el bien propio y el comunitario.
