Abstract

The aim of this study was to show the current state of scientific research regarding wine tourism, by comparing the platforms of scientific information WoS and Scopus and applying quantitative methods. For this purpose, a bibliometric study of the publications indexed in WoS and Scopus was conducted, analyzing the correlation between increases, coverage, overlap, dispersion and concentration of documents. During the search process, a set of 238 articles and 122 different journals were obtained. Based on the results of the comparative study, we conclude that WoS and Scopus databases differ in scope, data volume and coverage policies with a high degree of unique sources and articles, resulting both of them complementary and not mutually exclusive. Scopus covers the area of wine tourism better, by including a greater number of journals, papers and signatures.

Abstract

Bibliographic control by academic libraries is currently of major importance. We describe the problems that arise and the planning required in the collection, tracking and dissemination of publications by university researchers. Open access platforms can be used to disseminate publications data, interacting with institutional archives and the CV of each researcher. In addition, libraries can regularly review and unify researcher profiles in bibliographic databases, improving the researcher's h-index and assisting in the collection of bibliographic data. Finally, it is useful for academic libraries to participate in and disseminate the Orcid project's unique identifier for the authors.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the situation of Spanish journals in the master journal list of ISI Thomson Reuters’ citation indexes. The changes since 2007 will influence future results of bibliometric indicators of Journal Citation Reports. The presence of Spanish journals has increased significantly, especially in Social Sciences, where it started from a situation of invisibility. However, there are two important constraints in this success: the percentage of Spanish publications remains very limited and not all scientific fields will benefit equally from this progress.

Abstract

After a short historical perspective of bibliographic databases with citations, which allow bibliometric studies, the features of Google Scholar as a possible database for the same purpose are discussed. While Scholar is free and more comprehensive than WoS and Scopus, its use is not recommended for bibliometric analysis, especially for the evaluation of individuals and institutions.

Analysis of the citations received by the journal El profesional de la información (EPI) according to the databases ISI Science Citation Index (WoS) from Thomson Reuters, and Scopus from Elsevier, which index the journal since 2006. There are three main groups (or themes) recognized, that potentially can generate citations: bibliometrics, medicine, and library and information science in Spanish.

Planning and problems encountered to collect, track and disseminate researchers publications at the University of Oviedo. The library is an essential part of the university’s Annual Research Report. A double bibliographic platform in Dspace is used, that allows user interaction with both the institutional research archive and the institutional open access repository, and also connects with software to produce researchers’ Standard Curriculum Vitae (currículum vitae normalizado, CVN). The library monitors authors profiles, checking them against the main scientific databases in order to calculate a more accurate h-index, and better use evaluation products like Scival Strata and Scival Spotlight.

In this article the authors compare the visibility of Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) publications in the Core Collection indexes of the Web of Science (WoS) inlcuding Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index, and the SciELO Citation Index (SciELO CI) which was integrated into the larger WoS platform in 2014. The purpose of this comparison is to contribute to the broader understanding of the communication of scientific knowledge produced in Latin America and the Caribbean, and to provide some reflections on the potential benefits of the articulation of regional indexing exercises into WoS for a better understanding of geographic and disciplinary contributions. How is the regional level of SciELO CI related to the global range of WoS? In WoS, LAC authors are integrated at the global level in international networks, while SciELO has provided a platform for interactions among LAC researchers. The articulation of SciELO into WoS may improve the international visibility of the regional journals, but at the cost of own journal inclusion criteria independence.

Abstract

The purpose of this note is to describe the new citation context classification feature provided by Web of Science, in which citations received by publications are classified into five categories (Background, Basis, Support, Differ, and Discuss). To exemplify the functionality, two case studies have been carried out: one involving a journal (Profesional de la información; 1,604 publications) and the other, an author (Loet Leydesdorff; 341 publications). Both cases reflect the still low coverage of classified citations, which currently limits the use of this functionality. Finally, some of the questions that arise with the use of these context metrics (precision, comprehension, simplification, representativeness, comparability, language, evaluative use, effects, and extrapolation) are discussed.
