Abstract

This short paper analyzes Wikipedia as an object of scientific research, contrasting various studies dealing with that popular encyclopedia. The conclusion is that Wikipedia, as a manifestation of collaborative production and consumption of knowledge, is a valid subject of scientific research.

How current news impacts the creation of articles in the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia is studied. Unlike the traditional editorial model, Wikipedia articles on news events are produced at the same time as they happen, and, as a result, conflicts between journalism and encyclopedic criteria arise. The editorial policies and practices that the Wikipedia community of editors have been applying to the encyclopedic coverage of present facts, people, and breaking news are analyzed.

Abstract

Wikipedia desempeña desde hace una década el papel de enciclopedia de referencia obligada. La facilidad de acceso y consulta la han convertido en la principal fuente de información referencial para la mayoría de los usuarios de internet. Como no podía ser menos, su contenido (más bien la calidad del mismo) ha sido objeto de discusión desde su inicio, aunque progresivamente la madurez de la comunidad editora, la consolidación del modelo colaborativo y la implicación de diferentes actores científicos, educativos y culturales, han hecho que las posiciones vayan cambiando hacia una consideración de la enciclopedia como una herramienta educativa y de comunicación de primer orden. Wikipedia es un producto colaborativo que refleja, guste o no, las pautas y patrones socioculturales de la comunidad que la crea, utiliza y transforma.

This article explains how libraries, archives, museums and other cultural centres are involved in the Wikimedia Foundation's free knowledge projects, such as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. It also describes activities that strengthen openness in topics of interest to cultural institutions and generate enthusiasm through article edit-a-thons and other participatory initiatives.

Abstract

This paper justifies participation by public libraries in designing and publishing in “localpedias” as a way to promote collaboration in the creation of local content. For this purpose, the “localpedia” concept is explained and some of the main Spanish localpedia experiences described. Finally, some difficulties in consolidating this way of creating and sharing local knowledge are discussed.

This report highlights the most important recent activity in the field of semantic web, analyzing the most innovative aspects of the new RDF 1.1 recommendation, and discussing the first public working draft of Data on the web best practices. The evolution of semantic markup is analyzed, both from the point of view of standards and the practical applications on the Web. Wikipedia is identified as a dynamic factor in the semantic web, especially through the DBpedia and WikiData initiatives. Europeana and the Digital Public Library of America are clear references in the description of networked digital resources.

This paper presents the characteristics and functionalities of the Wikimedia Commons image databank shared by all Wikipedia projects. The process of finding images and ilustrating Wikipedia articles is also explained, along with how to add images to the bank. The role of cultural institutions in promoting free and open cultural heritage content is highlighted.
