Abstract

Virtualization is a technology that permits the abstraction of the software from one computer and its easy deployment in another one, which may house additional virtualized machines. This mechanism allows us to host more than one virtual computer in just one actual computer. An intranet is made up of a set of computers running as servers that are underutilized for the most part. In this paper we want to show virtualization as a tool allowing us to have a more efficient intranet because it helps us reduce the number of computers in the net; more secure because it allows the creation of backup copies automatically; and easier to manage because we centralize all our services with a handful of servers. With all this, virtualization allows hardware, electricity and maintenance savings.

Abstract

Digital humanities researchers experience some difficulties in accessing and using computational tools which are meant to assist them when carrying out queries of texts analysis in their studies. This is due to the fact that information concerning tools in this field and their effective usage is not linked to the information about their location and utilization. Clarin IULA-UPF Center aims at compiling and relating required information in a catalogue of linked data in order to offer researchers an integrated way of accessing it. This article presents details about the design and selection of the materials and description tools included in the catalogue.

Abstract

Document design has long been a standard task for information professionals. Nonetheless, the use of XML to encode and transfer electronic documents across networks and the development of various methods to describe the characteristics of various document types (XML schemas, RelaxNG, etc.) and their metadata have made clear the need for a more formal, structured approach to the design of various document types and their implementation using XML standards. This insight, combined with the requirements of new technological approaches to integrating software applications – web services or service-oriented architecture (SOA) - that rely on XML for document exchange across platforms, results in a need for documents whose structure is precisely defined. The work of Robert J. Glushko, specifically document engineering, provides the primary theoretical approach to this problem. Document engineering includes the activities necessary for the design of document types and their use as interfaces between systems in SOA environments. His work offers a formal, academic approach to what is currently one of the most interesting opportunities for information professionals.

International audience; The Document Analysis and Exploitation platform is a sophisticated technical environment that consists of a repository containing document images, implementations of document analysis algorithms, and the results of these algo- rithms when applied to data in the repository. The use of a web- services model makes it possible to set up document analysis pipelines that form the basis for reproducible protocols. Since the platform keeps track of all intermediate results, it becomes an information resource for the analysis of experimental data. This paper provides a tutorial on how to get started using the platform. It covers the technical details needed to overcome the initial hurdles and have a productive experience with DAE.

ISBN: 978-1-4577-1350-7; International audience; This contest aims to provide a metric giving indications on the influence of individual document analysis stages to overall end-to-end applications. Contestants are provided with a full, working pipeline which operates on a page image to extract useful information. The pipeline is built with clearly identified analysis stages (e.g. binarization, skew detection, layout analysis, OCR ...) that have a formalized input and output. Contestants are invited to contribute their own algorithms as an alternative to one or more of the initially provided stages. The evaluation measures the overall impact of the contributed algorithm on the final (end-of-pipeline) output.
