Abstract

Abstract: The paper analyses the relationship between the ideology of university students from the region of Valencia and their linguistic behaviour. Apart from the traditional right-left wing political scale, the required self-defining ideology includes national-regional identity and opinion on the unity of the Catalan (i.e. whether Valencian is considered part of Catalan or a different language). These are issues of ideological dispute more or less explicitly present in the Valencian society. Language uses are also plural and diverse. In fact, it is worth analysing the correlation between the uses related to habitual behaviour or to a context of proximity and uses which are more intentional or are activated in secondary, non-proximal relationships. It is within the latter that ideology can play a more determining role.Key words: language choice, ideology, identity, students, Valencia.

Abstract: The article studies the development of the concept of Valencia as «Lost Paradise», from Sharq al-Andalus Arabic literature to the metrical romances developed in the Philippine Archipelago. The paper focuses on the conceptualization of Valencian Elegy and its use as literary topic from eastern al-Andalus to the easternmost Hispanic domain, explaining the implications of Romancero in the Philippines and the presence of the Kingdom of Valencia in Philippine Literature. The fall of Islamic Valencia under the Christians created a literary fascination for Valencia as paradise, which would cross cultures as literary topic. Its influence on Asian literature would prove to be significant in the conformation of Philippine classicism based on Moors and Christians dramas and romanceros. Abstract

The growth in container transport volumes, the increase in the size of ships and the concentration of flows through a limited number of port hubs require higher capacity on hinterland connections. Road transport now accounts for most of the connections between ports and hinterland areas in Europe, resulting in port congestion associated with delays, waiting lines and increased permanence of ships and cargo in the port. This translates into additional costs and a negative environmental impact. In most cases, the development of rail transport becomes part of the solution to this problem. The current study contributes to the development of the strategy of the Port of Valencia in order to increase the rail modal share for import/export cargo through the definition and feasibility analysis of an innovative Just-In-Time (JIT) Rail Shuttle service for a key port-hinterland corridor in Spain connecting Valencia with Zaragoza. The proposed solution aims to directly unload the containers from the ship and load them onto trains, in order to minimize the movement of containers at the terminal and to operate as an “air bridge” at the airports, so that the shuttle makes round trips within one day and the containers are loaded on the first available JIT rail service. In order to minimize the cost per unit transported the feasibility study includes designing the operational solution, service characteristics, the requirements of the information system and the definition of the business models needed for its implementation.

Abstract

The town charters of modern period, very abundant in the Valencian Country, mainly as a result of the repopulations that followed the expulsion of the Moriscos (1609), have not been studied so far from a linguistic point of view to a large extent because until a few years ago we did not have a significant repertoire of this type of documents. These are texts of legal linguistic variety that directly affected the life of an important part of the population —also, indirectly, the idea that people could have of their native language. This paper attempts to make a first approach to the study of Valencian town charters from the 17th century, evaluating the degree of persistence of the use of Valencian in these texts, as well as the persistence of traditional linguistic models.

Abstract

This essay intends to apply to the Valencian verb the linguistic method of TAMP (tense-aspect-mood-person) within which different pragmatic parameters are organized in such a way never before seen to better understand this phenomena. The basic theory that this application shows is the Topological-Natural Pragmatics (T-NP, Calvo 1989) in which the tense-aspect relationship is dominated by the super-structural mood-person relationship. In this way, a new verbal paradigm is offered to explain the necessity of the past periphrastic or of the marked first person of the present indictive. The explanation of TAMP in Valencian is based in morphology, since there exists morphems which characterize it: stress (—'(—), —(—')), aspect (-av-I-i-), mood (- Vr-) and supermood (-Vs-). When the morphems do not appear, the result is a general background that permits different verbal uses and their neutralizations.

Abstract

A comparative analysis of variants introduced in the Valencia edition of «Spill de la vida religiosa» (1529) in contrast to the Barcelona edition (1515), with recourse to analogous data from reprints of Hull or Eiximenis and from the «Regles» attributed to Fenollar-Pau. The authors conclude that the differences are superficial and reveal an eagerness to Valencianize, or rather modernize, which cannot be regarded, in any case, as symptom of language breaking up. 

Abstract

This essay vindicates the interest of the study of 17th and 18th century Valencian, in opposition to traditional stereotypes that derogatively classify it as presumably a period of literary and socio-linguistic decline. Summing up previous works and with a large new body of evidence, the author describes the most significant morpho-syntactical characteristics of the Valencian varieties of this period, in contrast to precepts of the contemporary norm and to the present state of Valencian.

De totes les característiques burlesques i paròdiques de gèneres literaris tradicionals medievals que apareixen en «Lo Somni de Joan Joan» una de les que més destaca és la paròdia jurídica, ja que l’obra està configurada com un plet judicial que les dones burgeses benestants de la Valencia del XV interposen davant la deessa Venus per tal que es veja reconegut el seu dret a triar marit lliurement i a evitar els matrimonis desiguals amb homes vells que les requereixen. El procés judicial plantejat en l’obra posa de manifest la formació jurídica de l’autor, Jaume Gassull, i presenta totes les parts, figures i elements processals d’un judici comú, des de la demanda fins a la sentència. La sensació que la sentència condueix a la tergiversació dels bons costums –les dones són autoritzades a ser infidels si es casen amb homes vells– despareix perquè tot ha estat producte del somni del protagonista.

Abstract

This paper deals with various questions concerning the two types of border involved in the so-called xurra area: the linguistic border between Catalan (Valencian) and Castilian Spanish (Castilian-Aragonese), and the administrative border between Aragon and País Valencià. Based on data from linguistic atlases (ALEANR, ALPI) and linguistic monographs, the author also examines the distinguishing features of such varieties (basically catalanisms and aragonesisms), and different possibilities for interpretation. Finally, an attempt at a typology of border xurro varieties and speakers is offered: varieties (and speakers) from linguistic borders (1), from administrative borders (2), from linguistic and administrative borders (3), and the exceptional case of the Racó d’Ademús (4), with its own isolated areas.
