Abstract

Nine digital courses on deciphering and reading palaeography are analysed. The study focuses on their goals, taking into account the borrowings inherited from the previous educational materials. The article begins explaining the main terminology. Later, it summarizes the characteristics of the traditional system of learning palaeography, since the current online systems are based on it. The aim of this retrospective view is to determine which achievements belongs to the ancient system. Finally the advantages and the virtues of the new learning systems are discussed.  

Abstract

Within the European research project SimpleFleet, a telematics system for fleet management business intelligence was developed, delivering live or near-realtime statistics about individual vehicles or the entire fleet. This supports the fleet manager in ad-hoc decisions and in medium and long term improvements. The fleet vehicles (e.g. taxis, delivery vans) are equipped with an On-Board-Unit (OBU) for GPS tracking and data collection from other sensors, e.g., an engine on/off detector. These raw data are sent to a host system and database, being enhanced to Floating Car Data (FCD) using map-matching and routing. Beside other route-related information, consulted fleet operators expressed their interest especially in fuel consumption calculation. For this purpose the German EWS procedure was chosen, providing 2nd degree polynomial functions of the driven speed. Final results for the test in the Athens region are presented, including the comparison of two calculation approaches with different aggregation levels of driven speeds. Abstract

[EN] Increasing power consumption and CO2 emissions generated by large data networks have become a major concern over the last decade. For this problem, the emerging paradigm of Software-Defined Networks (SDN) can be seen as an attractive solution. In these networks an energy-aware routing model could be easily implemented leveraging the control and data plane separation. This paper investigates the impact of energy-aware routing on SDN performance. To that end, we propose a novel energy- aware mechanism that reduces the number of active links in SDN with multiple controllers, considering in-band control traffic, i.e. links are shared between data and control plane traffic. The proposed strategy exploits knowledge of the network topology combined with traffic engineering techniques to reduce the overall power consumption. Therefore, two heuristic algorithms are designed: a static network configuration and a dynamic energy-aware routing. Significant values of switched-off links are reached in the simulations using real topologies and demands data. Moreover, obtained results confirm that crucial network parameters such as control traffic delay, data path latency, link utilization and TCAM occupation are affected by the performance-agnostic energy-aware model. Abstract

English: road safety has become a main issue for governments and car manufacturers in the last twenty years. Thus, the concept of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) appeared. This concept is used when talking about communication technologies between vehicles and infrastructure that improve transport safety, its management, environmental performance etc. Due to the high economic cost of real-life tests and experimentation, the use of simulators becomes really useful when developing ITS. Nonetheless, simulators not always include all the capabilities needed to simulate these kinds of networks. Thus, in this project the NCTUns simulator is modified in order to add new capabilities that allow users simulate ITS. Furthermore, urban and interurban scenarios are simulated in order to evaluate how the use of these networks decreases the drivers reaction time when an unexpected situation occurs and how modifications made in NCTUns work. Castellano: la seguridad en la carretera se ha convertido en un problema principal para gobiernos y fabricantes de automóviles en los últimos años. De esta forma, se creó el concepto de Sistema de Transporte Inteligente (STI), concepto utilizado al hablar sobre las tecnologías de comunicación entre vehículos e infraestructura que mejoran la seguridad vial en el transporte, su mejor gestión, su eficiencia medioambiental, etc. Debido al alto coste económico de probar STI en situaciones reales, el uso de simuladores es realmente útil a la hora de desarrollar STI. Así, en este proyecto el simulador NCTUns ha sido modificado con el objetivo de añadir nuevas posibilidades al simulador que ayuden a diseñar STI. Además, un escenario urbano y otro interurbano han sido simulados con el objetivo de evaluar como el uso de estas redes hace disminuir el tiempo de reacción del conductor cuando una situación inesperada ocurre y comprobar cómo funcionan los cambios realizados en el simulador. Català: la seguretat a la carretera ha esdevingut un problema principal pels governs i pels fabricants d'automòbils en els últims anys. D'aquesta manera, es crea el concepte de Sistema de Transport Intel'ligent (STI), concepte utilitzat en parlar sobre les tecnologies de comunicació entre vehicles i infraestructura que milloren la seguretat vial en el transport, la seva millor gestió, l'eficiència mediambiental, etc. A causa de l'alt cost econòmic de provar STI en situacions reals, l'ús de simuladors és realment útil a l'hora de desenvolupar STI. Així, en aquest projecte el simulador NCTUns ha estat modificat amb l'objectiu d'afegir noves possibilitats al simulador que ajudin a dissenyar STI a futurs usuaris. A més, un escenari urbà i un altre interurbà han estat simulats amb l'objectiu d'avaluar com l'ús d'aquestes xarxes fa disminuir el temps de reacció del conductor quan una situació inesperada succeeix i comprovar com funcionen els canvis realitzats en el simulador.

Abstract

This study shows how intelligent parking systems can extend the parking space capacity along German federal motorways by the use of satellite close-ups. Through this approach, the expansion potential of existing rest and service stations can be analyzed by means of intelligent parking facility management. We focused our analysis on German federal motorways with the highest lack for truck parking lots. Along these motorways, suitable rest and service stations were identified and we applied different telematics and non-telematics approaches in order to increase the capacity of parking areas without starting extensive constructional projects. Our findings show that parking space utilization can be significantly improved by simple structural extensions and a simultaneous use of intelligent parking facility management. Our study shows possibilities for a rapid and sustainable increase of truck parking spaces in a simple way.
