Abstract

The complexity of the economic and technological environment requires companies to improve their competitiveness through innovation. In this context technology watch (TW), a systematic process that supports innovation, becomes an essential tool. In the literature, interest in TW has evolved from the definition of the concept, implications and resources to its practical development, focused on case studies in large organizations. However, there is a lack of works that analyze its use and results in SMEs. Thus, we examine the degree of knowledge and application of TW, how processes are developed and what are its benefits in 83 metal industry SMEs.

Abstract

The Technology watch sector studies published by the Agency for Innovation and Development of Andalusia in coopera tion with SCImago research group are aimed to provide the business and research community of the Spanish autonomous region of Andalusia with the states of the art of particular sectors. These reports are produced by analyzing scientific and technological information on a regional, national, and international level. The methodology behind the elaboration of these studies is presented, discussing its structure and the type of information analyzed.

Abstract

Given the importance of innovation and technology development in a country’s economy, there has been an increasing need for selecting indicators to measure the degree of innovation of its companies. The indicators related to patents offer an excellent measure of this capability and can be used as an important source of information by innovative organizations, although the studies assessing this utility are scarce. This study, conducted throughout 2007, proposes a technology watch oriented analysis of the level of use of patent databases from more than 500 Spanish companies that have issued at least one patent in the period 1988-1998, followed by discussion of the study results. The analysis took into account global data, company size and sector of activity
