Abstract

This study uses regression analysis to evaluate long-run traffic management system performance. Three important traffic management systems in the Twin Cities metro area - Ramp Metering, Variable Message Signs (VMS), and Freeway Service Patrol (the Highway Helper Program) were evaluated with multiple regression models to predict link speed and incident rate. We find that ramp meters increase freeway link speed and reduce incident rate. Freeway Service Patrols increase link speed when incidents are present. In view of the steadily growing car traffic and the limited capacity of our street networks, we are facing a situation where methods for better traffic management are becoming more and more important. Studies [92] show that an individual "blind" choice of routes leads to travel times that are between 6% and 19% longer than necessary. On the other hand, telematics and sensory devices are providing or will shortly provide detailed information about the actual traffic flows, thus making available the necessary data to employ better means of traffic management. Part 10: Collaboration Platforms; International audience; The development of the Single Window concept (unique access/contact point for composite services) for the multimodal door-to-door freight transport management is a complex endeavour that is being addressed by the European MIELE project. Led by port authorities, the project identified the need for a novel strategy to foster collaboration among stakeholders with a diversity of processes and technology. The multimodal perspective requires a convergence and thus collaboration of maritime, railway, road, and air transport facilities as it is the case for the need of traffic information for a real-time (re)planning if some accident is hindering the current route. This requires that traffic information from different operators is integrated into the freight transport routing planner. Furthermore, a unified coordination and operations management of the existing business processes is lacking. Abstract

The traffic investigation is one of the most important parts of an Environmental Impact Statement of projects involving the construction of new roadway facilities and/or the improvement of existing ones. The focus of the traffic analysis is on the determination of anticipated traffic flow characteristics of the proposed project, by the application of analytical methods that can be grouped under the umbrella of capacity analysis methodologies. In general, the main traffic parameter used in EISs to describe the quality of traffic flow is the Level of Service (LOS). The current state of the practice in terms of the traffic investigations for EISs has two main shortcomings. The first one is related to the information that is necessary to conduct the traffic analysis, and specifically to the lack of integration among the different transportation models and the sources of information that, in general, reside in GIS databases. A discussion of the benefits of integrating CRS&SI technologies and the transportation models used in the EIS traffic investigation is included. The second shortcoming is in the presentation of the results, both in terms of the appearance and formatting, as well as content. The presentation of traffic results (current and proposed) is discussed. Thismore » chapter also addresses the need of additional data, in terms of content and coverage. Regarding the former, other traffic parameters (e.g., delays) that are more meaningful to non-transportation experts than LOS, as well as additional information (e.g., freight flows) that can impact traffic conditions and safety are discussed. Spatial information technologies can decrease the negative effects of, and even eliminate, these shortcomings by making the relevant information that is input to the models more complete and readily available, and by providing the means to communicate the results in a more clear and efficient manner. Geographical information based decision making related to traffic destinations and routes is proposed through the design. The system includes a geospatial database having profile relating to a user of a mobile device. The processing and understanding of scanned maps, other digital data input leads to route guidance. The system includes a server configured to receive traffic information relating to a route and location information relating to the mobile device. Server is configured to send a traffic alert to the mobile device when the traffic information and the location information indicate that the mobile device is traveling toward traffic congestion. Proposed system has geospatial and mobile data sets pertaining to Bangalore city in India. It is envisaged to be helpful for touristic purposes as a route guidance and alert relaying information system to tourists for proximity to sites worth seeing in a city they have entered into. The system is modular in architecture and the novelty lies in integration of different modules carrying different technologies for a complete traffic information system. Generic information processing and delivery system has been tested to be functional and speedy under test geospatial domains. In a restricted prototype model with geo-referenced route data required information has been delivered correctly over sustained trials to designated cell numbers, with average time frame of 27.5 seconds, maximum 50 and minimum 5 seconds. International audience; With the constant increasing of Vehicular traffic around the world, especially in urban areas, existing traffic management solutions become inefficient. This can be clearly seen in our life through persistent traffic jam and rising number of accidents. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) based intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have emerged as a cost effective technology that bear a pivotal potential to overcome these difficulties. This technology enables a new broad range of smart city applications around urban sensing including traffic safety, traffic congestion control, road state monitoring, vehicular warning services, and parking management. This manuscript gives a comprehensive review on WSN based ITS solutions. The main contribution of this paper is to classify current WSNs based ITS projects from the application type point of view with a deep discussion on how the application requirements are fulfilled. This paper addresses the convergence of two major trends in the transportation world, namely MaaS (“Mobility as a Service”) and TM2.0 (“cooperation between traffic managers and service providers”); the specific case study described is MyCorridor project."br" The paper claims that TM2.0 is an effective enabler of MaaS and vice versa, we demonstrate that MaaS world could become an enabler for TM2.0. This will be evaluated in MyCorridor EC-funded project. MyCorridor is approaching the MaaS concept by addressing those services that are connected to the vehicle world, with the primary aim to stimulate travellers to shift from private vehicle ownership to sharing economy concept (car sharing, bicycle sharing, public transport and para transit). It extends the TM2.0 concept by providing a solution that incorporates multi-modal, seamless, flexible, reliable, user-friendly, all inclusive, price-worthy and environmentally sustainable travel at cities, regions and cross-border.

hough road agencies need to provide road infrastructure that is beneficial for road users, little is known about how the activities of the agencies influence the value creation of road infrastructure. From a service-dominant logic perspective, the importance of road maintenance and traffic management activities for the contribution of road infrastructure to the value-creation process of road users is investigated. Road agencies facilitate the value creation of road users by maintaining, upgrading or renewing road infrastructure, the provision of information about the current traffic situation, possible redirection routes in case of traffic jams, and suggestions for appropriate driving behavior. Based on a structured questionnaire, data were collected among motorists in Singapore and analyzed by means of a partial least square modeling approach. The analysis revealed that road cleanliness and road evenness have a significant effect on the experience of road maintenance. Important and significant indicators for the experience of traffic management are the clarity of road signs and the efficiency of traffic redirection. A main conclusion of the research is that for traffic-intensive networks, both road maintenance and traffic management activities are important contributors to the value creation of road infrastructure with a slightly stronger contribution of traffic management activities. Road agencies need to find appropriate maintenance strategies which reduce and coordinate simultaneous maintenance interventions on the network to such an extent that traffic management activities are able to minimize any considerable loss of traffic flow. In a bid to cost-effectively tackle congestion, traffic management is often seen as a key option to utilise road capacity. Prior to the application of traffic management measures, a-priori analysis allows the effectiveness of measures to be judged and where necessary adapted. However, current approaches do this without considering the effects of stochastic uncertainty and fluctuations in traffic flow. These stochastic effects have been shown to substantially influence the evaluation of traffic management measures. In this contribution, a methodological framework is proposed and demonstrated in a multi-part case study, applying approaches that explicitly consider stochastic variations and applications for traffic management. The results of the case study demonstrate the effectiveness of the models and highlight the necessity to consider uncertainty and fluctuations when a-priori evaluating traffic management measures. © 2018 World Conference on Transport Research Society

Abstract

This paper proposes VehILux, a new vehicular mobility model based on real traffic counting data. It relies on two freely available sources of real information for the country of Luxembourg. The first source is traffic data collected by counting devices located on the Luxembourgian road network, while the second is geographical information about different types of areas: residential, industrial, commercial and other services. VehILux models vehicles commuting around the city of Luxembourg by considering two types of traffic, outer traffic with vehicles entering in the defined geographical area and inner traffic starting from residential zones located inside the geographical area. One part of the collected traffic data is used as input traffic, while another part is used to control the produced traffic and to fine-tune the model. VehILux is coupled with the microscopic road traffic simulator SUMO to produce realistic vehicular traces.
