Abstract

In this article, which first appeared in 1983, some thoughts are given to the status of Catalan since the Spanish political transition into democracy. The purpose is to show how present «important» opinionmakers base themselves on an escapist fantasy which replaces real history, which in tur prevents us to study the real past and thus conceive and propose a real future for the language. An analysis is made of the significance of the Renaixença and how this movement considered Catalan as lost. In fact, the ultimate aspirations of regionalists were nowhere near the minimum requirements of a modern European linguistic community. Therefore, the present return to the idyllic recovery practised by the Renaixença is considered even more brutally simplistic and fantastic than what the Renaixença meant. This different analysis of the present situations involves a change in mentality, a different way of thinking. Such mentality must enable us to clarify, not only the wiles coming from outside, but first and foremost, the internal obstacles presented by Catalan society itself.

1993 was the centenary celebration of the death of writer, journalist and politician Carmel Navarro Llombart, more commonly known by his pseudonym Constantí Llombart. The speech by Vicent Ventura at the celebration organized by the University of Valencia takes a look at the highlights in the life of Llombart and his statements in favor of recuperating Catalan language and culture, in opposition to the groups that would ultimately dominate during the Renaixença in the Valencian Country.

This article tries to outline the general background of grammatical studies in Catalan by the end of the 19th century and beginnings of the 20th century, while phocusing on the work of the Valencian grammarian Josep Nebot i Pérez, his linguistic ideology and his interesting proposal of producing two different set of grammars: a popular one, and another addressed to the more cultivated reader.

This article is a revision of Teodor Llorente’s literary work in Catalan, in prose and in poetry, which turns out to be an exceptional production for his time, in accordance with his role as a leader and an ideologist of the Valencian Renaixença, and places him as the poet who contributes most, both in quantity and quality, to this literary movement. The first part of the article, focused on his lyric poetry, revises the six editions of his verses which were published between 1885 and 1983, and brings back to life ‘unknown’ poems -unpublished or dispersed- which have never been included in any edition. The second part lists and catalogues his prose writings in Catalan and dismantles the belief that he only used Catalan to write poetry.

Cristòfor Martí i Adell informs us about the relationship between Frederic Mistral and Teodor Llorente within the general context of Occitano-Valencian relations in the Renaissance. He assesses their ideological and literary content and the possible influence on the patriarch of the Valencian Renaissance of the Occitan poet. These evaluations are based on new and decisive documentary evidences.
