Abstract

Advanced information services developed in Spanish public libraries are examined, as well as some of the information resources widely available online. The author calls for an organic relationship between the public library system and the telephone-based information services provided by local and regional authorities.

Abstract

  The digital environment and information and communication technologies open up new ways of providing library services, including the reference service, the principal aim of which is to address users’ queries and information needs. Putting the reference service in place in this new environment requires redesigning the policies, procedures and resources applied to it and therefore an analysis of the services and functions of the computing tools available must be undertaken. Integrated library management systems which involve multiple functionalities for delivering services, or which expand the capacity for their delivery, must also respond to the requirements for putting this type of service in place. This article sets out the results obtained in a study carried out on several examples of integrating new reference services into a library management system (Koha), which not only enables these services to be delivered but also expands the options for using the data for their improvement and development.

Reference services, both face-to-face and virtual, in academic libraries have a low usage, which jeopardize their continuity. University librarians worldwide are pursuing innovative and creative programs to offer the service where, how and when it is needed. Libraries have to evaluate their services to meet the changing needs of users, developing and adding marketing plans to strategic plans, which allow a redesign of reference service, depending on statistical data, user satisfaction data, and ROI. The academic library must demonstrate the value it brings to the objectives of the institution. Based on a literature review, an overview of the current face-to-face and virtual reference services in university libraries is provided, pointing their mistakes and successes.
