Abstract

The importance of social networks for mass media professionals, especially for news librarians –whose traditional intermediary role limited their visibility to users– is explained. Examples of documentation centres and news librarians’ profiles in social media like weblogs, Facebook, Twitter or Eskup are offered.

Abstract

The digital press archives of the Spanish newspapers with the largest digital circulations ara analysed. Evaluative study based on 27 indicators divided into 4 main sections: general features, content, query system, and presentation of results. The analysis was conducted in 2010, and results obtained in 2007 are compared. The best and worst aspects of the digital press archives are pointed out, establishing a newspapers ranking: El mundo, Abc, El país and La vanguardia occupy the top positions. The five major trends: extension of the temporary fund online, free archives versus payment archives, simplification (and depletion) of the query, filters in the presentation of results and documentary products in the archives are described.

Abstract

After introducing journalistic documentation products in digital media such as Special reports and Topics, this paper reviews the literature about this issue and presents a case study of The New York Times Topics section. The method followed comprises the study of the site over several months during 2011, complemented with an interview with its current chief editor, John O’Neil. Issues such as the origin and objectives of the section, work method, types of Topics  pages, page structure, and constituent elements of the section and particular pages are discussed. The main contributions of The New York Times Topics and some areas for improvement are pointed.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the situation of the archive departments in 14 of the Andalusian local newspapers. The aim is to update a similar study entitled “Situation of archive services in the daily press of Andalusia” (Aquesolo-Vegas, 1996) in which an analysis of these departments was performed for seven newspapers. This work studies, adapts, and extends the methodology of the above cited study to know how the situation has evolved since 1996. To that end, this field study is based on questionnaires sent to 16 Andalusian newspapers, two per province; 14 of which were completed. Aspects such as tasks, staff, facilities, and equipment are analyzed. The results show a technological restructuring, and also a reduction, or even the disappearance, of these services, due to the economic downturn. Therefore, journalists must now search for documents by themselves.

Abstract

The documentary criteria that researchers and professionals think are essential for assessing Internet information sources and for implementing these sources in news libraries are presented. Results of a Delphi study conducted in 2013 with eight experts in news librarianship and a survey of 81 news librarians working in Spanish media are discussed. Aspects such as the impact of digital sources on news libraries, their frequency of use, the type of resource searched, and the consequences for professional routines in these centres are analyzed. 86.4% of respondents use the Internet every day to search for information. Documentation centres of the Spanish mainstream media have not established a policy for the selection of information sources on the Web.

Abstract

The article presents a survey research in 10 documentation centres of Spanish television stations. The authors analyze first the current situation of television documentation tasks after digitization, and the emergence of journalists participation in some of these tasks. Second, we analyze the implementation level, typology and problems of developing documentary products in the documentation centres. For the first time we report a map of the implementation of documentary products in the Spanish television stations. Other results found were: journalists perform the selection of the original materials in 8 of the 10 television stations studied; few documentary products combine text and audiovisual information, and these are usually created for internal use in the news room and not for the audience.

Abstract

Television is unquestionably a vehicle that socializes the journalistic tale of the human experience. The evolution of journalistic documentation and the need to respond to the organization of content generated in video collections and television archives, in particular news broadcasts, have created new areas and niches of opportunity for library and information science professionals. The research that is being carried out in Mexico on the analysis of news broadcasts and content representation on the web is presented. The documentary news treatment is crucial to strengthen the quality of content representation and ensure the relevance of discourse analysis for its organization, accessibility and preservation. The visibility of television news on the Web could be lessened due to deficiencies in metadata description.

Profiles for each of the two disciplines are set out, together with common aspects for comparison to identify their similarities and differences. Based on the comparison, the paper argues for the convergence of the two disciplines, finding that each is vital to safeguarding the social functions performed in the press coverage of current events, including the essential function of user-generated content.
