Abstract

This paper expounds the consideration to the design of protection and exhibition of Hanyuan Hall and Linde Hall of the Daming Palace. Based on in-depth study on their existing conditions after archeological excavation, and in combination with comprehensive considerations in terms of the protection of the main body of sites, the restoration research of existing bases and superstructures, the requirement of site open exhibition, etc., it proposes the design to restore the rammed earth bases by surrounding them with bricks and stones or rammed earth. Besides the protection and exhibition of the site of Hanyuan Hall bases, it also integrates the features of landform there to design the protection and exhibition of brick and tile kiln of Tang Dynasty within the relic area. Under the condition at that time, a semi-underground small exhibition center is designed by taking advantage of the height difference of base side slopes, satisfying the requirement of exhibition, and meanwhile preserving the overall landscape of the site. The integration of the design of protection project with archeology as well as the science and technology of heritage preservation is a brand-new probe into site protection design.

Abstract

Palazzo Valentini, a historical site of Rome׳s Provincial Administration, is located at the heart of the city. The building was purchased in 1827 by Vincenzo Valentini, a banker and consul general of the Prussian Crown. In 1939, with the outbreak of World War II, a fully self-contained, air-raid shelter was built under the courtyard, with an exit tunnel heading onto the Trajan׳s Forum. Archaeological investigations started in 2005 in view of a simple rehabilitation work of the underground level. As work progressed, the sample-plots brought to light new archaeological findings: relics of a huge temple and what remained of two residential houses with thermal baths. We therefore designed an exhibition space with glass surfaces to allow visitors to appreciate the findings while following a path through historical ages: from the 16th-century courtyard to the underground Roman domus (the sumptuous houses of senators and dignitaries of the Roman Empire), with private baths, to the remains of a Roman temple, and all the way to the Trajan׳s Column pedestal by way of the air-raid shelter. Virtual reconstructions, graphic effects, and movies are the means used to revive the hypothetical original appearance of the environments and the daily life of that epoch in order to help us build a prototype of an on-site museum of the third millennium.

Abstract

In the last century museums have undergone a number of transformations from the conceptual, functional and practical side that have enhanced their communications. The technological revolution, and more specifically the emergence of the Internet, has demonstrated its potential to set up and globalize a set of tools, called social media, able to establish a closer link between the institution and its audience. However, the essence of web 2.0 requires a change in attitude that will eliminate any trace of unidirectionality and allow participation. These requirements affect the configuration of the museum’s communication strategy, which should integrate the digital side and keep in mind the particularities derived from it.

Abstract

Aware of the need for the optimal management of documentary resources to help us fulfil the goals set by the museum, we are presenting the work being undertaken in this direction by the Artium Library and Documentation Centre. An overview is provided on bibliographic heritage management, digital content creation through DokuArt and the creation of sound archives and museum activity.

Abstract

The results of a study on the development of a museum-2.0 or social museums and the communication between these organizations and their virtual visitors are presented. We based it on an analysis of the social media profiles of major museums and art centers in San Francisco, London and Madrid. Tracking and monitoring of these profiles was performed from December 2012 to December 2013. In this study, not only is it important how many followers or how many profiles are used in online media communication, but also the communication and curatorial strategies that these institutions apply. We explore the possible development of dialogue spaces, interaction, participation and creation that move toward the idea of a complete virtual and social museum.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is the assessment of the comprehensibility in museum panels, considering that they are addressed to all audiences and written in standard language. The indicators proposed in the scientific bibliography on comprehensibility are compiled. Subsequently, their application to the museum panels is analyzed. A corpus is built with the texts of panels from six museums and the difficulty of the panels is evaluated by means of classical metrics and tests on users’ perception. The ability of these classic metrics to predict the difficulty for the user is computed with automatic learning methods. Linguistic and term familiarity indicators have been added to improve the accuracy of the assessment. The most effective way to predict the degree of comprehensibility is a hybrid model of classical, linguistic and term familiarity indicators.
