Abstract

International audience; This SIG focuses on the engineering of automation in interactive critical systems. Automation has already been studied in a number of (sub-) disciplines and application fields: design, human factors, psychology, (software) engineering, aviation, health care, games. One distinguishing feature of the area we are focusing on is that in the field of interactive critical systems properties such as reliability, dependability, fault-tolerance are as important as usability, user experience or overall acceptance issues. The SIG targets at two problem areas: first the engineering of the user interaction with (partly-) autonomous systems: how to design, build and assess autonomous behavior, especially in cases where there is a need to represent on the user interface both autonomous and interactive objects. An example of such integration is the representation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) (where no direct interaction is possible), together with aircrafts (that have to be instructed by an air traffic controller to avoid the UAV). Second the design and engineering of user interaction in general for autonomous objects/systems (for example a cruise control in a car or an autopilot in an aircraft).

Abstract

International audience; Inland navigation systems are large scale networks that are used for transport. The navigation can be accommodated if the navigation condition are gathered, i.e. if there is enough volume of water in each part of the network. Thus, it is necessary to supply the inland navigation networks with water and to well dispatch the available volume of water on the whole system. This aim is generally achieved without difficulty in normal condition. However, during drought periods, the available volume of water is decreasing and the navigation conditions would not be reached every time. These situations are expected to be more current in the future specially in a global change context in which the frequency and the magnitude of drought events will increase. Hence, it is necessary to design some tools to study the resilience of inland navigation networks against drought events. For this purpose a flow network model, allowing to simulate the inland navigation systems, is proposed in this paper.

Abstract

Socio-Technical Systems (STS) such as Air Traffic Management Systems (ATM) are considered as complex as they encompass interactions involving humans and machines deeply influenced by environmental aspects (e.g. weather conditions) and by the overall organizational structure in which they are deployed in. Within such STS, interactive systems are omnipresent allowing operators to interact with the underlying system. Such interactive systems must be both usable (i.e. enabling users to perform their tasks efficiently and effectively while ensuring a certain level of operator satisfaction) and resilient to adverse events including software malfunctions (e.g. automation degradation) as well as interaction related problems (e.g. human errors or interactive system failures). Current techniques, methods and tools do not allow to model STSs as a whole and thus to analyze both usability and resilience properties. This paper proposes a multi-models based approach for the modelling and the analysis of partly-autonomous interactive systems for assessing their resilience and usability. The approach integrates 3 modelling techniques: Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) (focused on organizational functions), Human-centered Assessment and Modelling to Support Task Engineering for Resilient Systems (HAMSTERS) (centered on human goals and activities) and Interactive Cooperative Objects (ICO) (dedicated to the modelling of interactive systems). The principles of the multi-models approach is illustrated on an example for carefully showing the extensions proposed to the selected modelling techniques and how they integrate together. A case study dealing with aircraft route change due to bad weather conditions demonstrates the scalability and benefits of the approach.

International audience; The T-Ten European program aims at optimizing the transport logistics in Europe by promoting alternative transport modes. Navigation transport offers a competitive and environmentally friendly alternative. Hence, it is foresaw an increase of the navigation transport demand that it will be necessary to accommodate. This will be very challenging particularly in a global change context where less available water resource is expected. A constraint satisfaction problem based on flow graph is proposed in this paper to study the resilience of inland navigation networks against increase of the navigation demand and extreme events. Drought and flood scenarios are simulated considering an network composed of five interconnected navigation reaches. The results show that the designed tools are well adapted to the resilience study of inland navigation networks.

Best Paper Honorable Mention award; International audience; We reflect upon the design of a paper-based tangible interactive space to support air traffic control. We have observed, studied, prototyped and discussed with controllers a new mixed interaction system based on Anoto, video projection, and tracking. Starting from the understanding of the benefits of tangible paper strips, our goal is to study how mixed physical and virtual augmented data can support the controllers' mental work. The context of the activity led us to depart from models that are proposed in tangible interfaces research where coherence is based on how physical objects are representative of virtual objects. We propose a new account of coherence in a mixed interaction system that integrates externalization mechanisms. We found that physical objects play two roles: they act both as representation of mental objects and as tangible artifacts for interacting with augmented features. We observed that virtual objects represent physical ones, and not the reverse, and, being virtual representations of physical objects, should seamlessly converge with the cognitive role of the physical object. Finally, we show how coherence is achieved by providing a seamless interactive space.
