Abstract

Web 2.0 convergence with the mobile web is shifting the very nature of the Internet. Local multimedia holdings generated in a mobile-networked society often don’t fit with library catalogs. Their methods of diffusion and discovery move away from those associated with the traditional library and into social networking and new devices. Local archive-building in this new context requires content fitted to the new devices, skilled people to interact with them, and libraries that understand new forms of information demand and consumption. In order to find its place in this context, the library must combine its traditional role as a dynamic agent specialized in providing access to bibliographic resources with a new role as an advocate for informal web content.

One of the main internet trends is the increasing access to information through mobile devices, especially smartphones. The so-called mobile web is affecting all areas, including very versatile uses for scientific activity. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the use that the scientific community is making of the mobile web, firstly as an information and referral tool, with an analysis of leading mobile applications from publishers of scientific journals, databases and reference managers and secondly as a research tool and a data collection tool, among others.

QR codes are an easy way to read information from mobile devices and allow direct or indirect access to information resources. For libraries, these codes can help to expand services and access to mobile users in simple and inexpensive ways: resource guides, practical information, direct download of documentation, multimedia, etc. The article provides examples of use and tools for building codes.

Throughout 2009 we have seen a number of technology trends that according to the views of most analysts will have a greater role in 2010. Growth and centralization of social networks, the explosion (and future decline?) of communication and real-time search, the proliferation of cloud services, SaaS and virtualization, the emergence of social software applied to Enterprise 2.0, the growing OS war in the cloud, increased internet access using mobile devices, and the emergence of other technologies at home and away, from 3D to augmented reality. Finally, we consider whether we’ll see in 2010 the beginning of the “death of the website concept”.

Accessing the Web from mobile devices sometimes entails difficulties due to the technical and physical characteristics of these appliances. There are several methods for improving the reading of blogs on these devices: on the one hand, readers can use an aggregator; on the other hand, bloggers can use free online services, install plug-ins in the content management system or create new templates. These methods and others that help to manage blogs from mobile devices are explained.

In the past year and a half, we have seen a forceful consolidation of what is called the Mobile Web. Parallel to its development, an ample number of devices (mobile telephones, PDAs, UMPCs, SmartPhones, etc) have appeared that allow users to interconnect and also access the Internet fromany place with a wireless connection. Mobility, and especially geopositioning, opens up new services and possibilities in leisure, culture, business, and work patterns. We are witnessing the beginnings of the Mobile Web, another whole new revolution for our paper world. If Gutenberg were alive, he would really be surprised.

The most significant developments in the field of mobile technology in 2014 are reviewed, with the aim of obtaining an overview of the sector and its market penetration in the library and reading worlds. First, major developments in terms of devices, operating systems, standards, applications and technologies are examined. Then we analyze their use by readers and libraries, both internationally and in Spain. To conclude, in a prospective exercise, we describe the mobility trends that we will see soon in our libraries.
