The aim of this article is to review Marchena’s ideas about Calderón’s theater, which fall within the debate about the author of El Alcalde de Zalamea that raged over the first third of the Nineteenth Century. The paper draws on the judgments and the anthology of Calderonian texts that Marchena cites and edits according to his original civil conception of Spanish literary history in his Lecciones de Filosofía Moral y Elocuencia (1820).
