Abstract

Con la publicación en 2011 del informe final del W3C Library Linked Data Incubator Group (disponible en Traducción al español de documentos del W3C Library Linked Data Incubator Group) se dio un paso muy importante a la hora de concretar los principios de linked open data al entorno de las bibliotecas, archivos, museos y centros de documentación.

Abstract

The concept of "big data" is explained as a system of analyzing large amounts of data to discover trends, patterns, correlations and even causality to generate predictions. This discipline can be adapted to the context of the daily work of the information professional dealing with "small data" and web analytics. Examples are provided of tools that support the management and analysis of huge amounts of publicly available data.

Abstract

This document shows a state-of-the-art in the information retrieval landscape, with special emphasis on recent trends, strategies and experiences during 2009, as well as research and development expectations in this field for the near future (2010). The paper first gathers a simple review about the growing importance and complexity of Information Retrieval in our discipline, deepening then about the challenge for Librarianship and Information Science for the second decade of 21st century: not only to retrieve information but also to “link data”.

Abstract

The success of information professionals in the coming years will depend on their commitment to research and development in the areas of identification, access, retrieval, storage, description and assessment of the vast amount of resources available. This research effort should be coordinated with computer scientists, not to seek their cooperation in specific technical tasks and developments, but to make significant progress in frontier areas of content sciences. Greater project participation by librarians is proposed, especially in European or international consortia, paying particular attention to the implementation of standards, advocacy of open access, exploitation of new interfaces, data networking and digitization. The process should include ethical issues, involve end users, promote resource integration platforms and extend formats coverage beyond text documents.

Abstract

A general overview of the different semantic markup formats and the existing technologies to incorporate explicit semantic information (microformats, microdata and RDFa) is provided. Services are described that automate, to some extent, semantic annotation processes (Sindice, Calais, AlchemyAPI and DBPedia Spotlight), while characterizing the complete cycle of this process in a particular CMS (Wordpress) using a specialized plugin (RDFaCE-Lite). Finally, in order to quantify the creation and connectivity of semantically marked content on the Web, the space formed by all Spanish universities (and a selection of 25 international institutions) is analysed with Sindice . Semantic page count and visibility indicators (inlinks, outlinks, internal and third party) are calculated for the sample. The results indicate limited presence of semantically marked content in the universities and highly isolated web visibility of this content.

Abstract

With the objective of achieving greater visibility for the research and scholarly contributions generated by members of the university community, the development of a content management system (cms) is proposed that would work with the Semantically-interlinked online communities (Sioc) initiative, managed within the academic library. This enables interoperability between the information systems of the library and the dissemination of information in social networks. Nexus is a tool that facilitates interaction between researchers and academics using microformats and Drupal as a cms. This paper explains the features of the service, its nodes and modules, and the services offered under the philosophy of linked data.

Abstract

Digital humanities researchers experience some difficulties in accessing and using computational tools which are meant to assist them when carrying out queries of texts analysis in their studies. This is due to the fact that information concerning tools in this field and their effective usage is not linked to the information about their location and utilization. Clarin IULA-UPF Center aims at compiling and relating required information in a catalogue of linked data in order to offer researchers an integrated way of accessing it. This article presents details about the design and selection of the materials and description tools included in the catalogue.

Abstract

A new system is proposed to design and format bibliographic information using linked open data and semantic technology. Two ontological models are presented. The first one is based on the bibliographic ontology LD4L. The second one is the new ontology BiblioOntology, designed to categorize by subject the resources of a university library. Using either ontology, users can publish linked open data (LOD) and to categorize a resource from its MARCXML. It also allows users to query the information by various criteria and enrich it with criteria from external sources. Finally, it serves as a provider to other sources, through a Sparql Point  service. The main contribution of the system is its usefulness for the integration, distribution, reuse, and open use of the bibliographic resources of a university library. Abstract

A review of software applications for managing digital repositories is presented. Information managers have at their disposal several alternatives beyond those that have achieved greater popularity in the area of academic repositories: DSpace and EPrints. Existing alternatives have evolved and implemented mayor improvements in their more recent versions, with the aim of adopting the latest standards for the semantic web and linked data. This paper provides a description of the new features incorporated into the latest versions of the most popular open-source products. The selection has been made using as a reference the information offered by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), Digital Curation Center (DCC), National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA), and Open Preservation Foundation. The conclusions of the study indicate that the combined use of different tools is needed to support a complete archive and digital preservation program, as no single application seems to be able to provide the features required for an effective strategy.
