Abstract

The most significant advances of the Bibliographic framework initiative (Bibframe) during 2015 are described, along with the proposal for a new version of the Bibframe vocabulary (Bibframe 2.0 draft specifications), and its impact on the core classes: Item, Title and Authority. Along with this, a synopsis of presentations given about Bibframe in 2015 and early 2016 is provided in order to give an overview of the status and evolution of the projects being generated around this initiative.

Abstract

Based on the approach of the role that documentary languages develop in the linked open data environment, two ontologies for publishing authority control files are briefly analysed: Mads/RDF and the GND ontology. We consider the need to contemplate the linked open data reality in a more inclusive and global perspective, in which not only datasets are interconnected, but also controlled vocabularies and description models.

Abstract

The Europeana project progress is presented, emphasizing its importance among other strategies of the European Commission. In 2011 important recommendations and standards were published that clarify the future development of Europeana. Documents produced by the W3C are highlighted and Spanish contributions, particularly from Hispana, are listed. The collaboration between Europeana and the Digital Public Library of America is mentioned. Finally, the differences between various concepts like open access, open data and open source are explained.

The semantic web has enough critical mass to expand its technological scope to content management systems (cms). Currently, an increase in the application of interoperable standards to publish large datasets is detected. Rdf, owl and sparql are replacing traditional developments based on relational database management systems for management and storage of information. Cms are beginning to use these technologies to publish content with semantic web formats, and to define mappings with elements of rdf vocabularies. In this regard, Cms also incorporate features to add semantic information into the xhtml code using rdfa and applying sparql to query data or incorporate external data.

Abstract

This paper shows some trends that are currently occurring in the environment of the semantic web. More specifically it presents schema.org, a project developed by Google, Yahoo and Bing for semantic markup using microdata, Freebase, a knowledge bank for structured information and Kasabi, a platform that operates into the modality of “Software as a Service” for the publication and commercial distribution of semantic data. It is possible see some technological divergence in the application of semantic Web standards with the development of new proposals as microdata, and the emergence of a market for linked data through publishing platforms that facilitate commercialization.

The importance for libraries, archives and cultural heritage institutions of open innovation on the basis of linked open data basis is discussed. As the web evolves into a global data space, libraries should provide their datasets using RDF technologies and open licenses to strengthen innovative services developed by third parties reusing their metadata and digital contents.

Abstract

This paper aims to determine the scope of application of SKOS in the Semantic Web. Controlled vocabularies registered in the The Data Hub catalog of RDF datasets that use SKOS were studied. In addition to establishing a typology of vocabularies, authors analyzed the issues related to open access to data through its direct download, its query through a Sparql endpoint and the existence of appropriate licenses. The existing level of interoperability through the definition of mapping relationships between vocabularies are examined. The study concludes that thesauri and classifications are more integrated into the open data environment while subject headings lists have greater interoperability.

Abstract

We show the first steps of the initiatives Open data and Linked open data as sources of innovation in the field of information management. As the Open Access  movement (OA) and the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) implied some years ago, these two  initiatives constitute a shock that reverberated in technological innovation and the structure of the Web. We present a global overview of open data  and national projects related to government data. Four Spanish local or regional administrations have already begun to release their data: in chronological order, Asturias, Euskadi, Zaragoza and Catalonia. In the case of Linked open data  we also provide a global picture, with 203 registered projects. We describe in more detail the work that the W3C is currently carrying out in the field of libraries. Finally we present the consecuences these new developments can have for librarianship and information science.

Abstract

Review of the concepts and technologies associated with the transition from a web of documents to a web of data. The role that public and academic libraries are playing or may play about big data, open data, and linked open data is described. The strategic importance of open data and linked open data (LOD) for the future of libraries is emphasized.
