Abstract

To explore the relative failure of libraries in the social we, the ideas of community and networking are compared, considering the associated concepts of cognitive surplus and network behavior aswell. The environment is one of a changing universe of almost instant obsolescence, where everything is for sale -especially to users, who give up their privacy. The conclusion: the keys to unlock the language of the network must be mastered in order to take advantage of the benefits and confront potential threats.

Abstract

Some companies have begun to restrict the use of e-mail with the conviction that the information overload it causes undermines labor productivity. But the problem is not the tool, but the interruptions caused by excessive exchange of messages, often with irrelevant information. Therefore, the real solution is to establish appropriate management strategies and avoid excessive communication. Some initiatives are committed to moving the internal communication to social media, although it tends to fragment the information required to complete tasks.

Abstract

Thoughts on information services strategies to fit with the routines of personal information management that users adopt in a digital information overload (infoxication) setting. The patterns of information use, as well as the breaking points of the information use routines that serve as creative instants of reorganization and streamlining of the burden of stored personal information, are the starting point of the proposed debate on responses to infoxication, both in terms of planning for resources and services and of guiding and training users. The conclusion is reached that in this information overload setting, regular archiving or discarding of information adds value to the information retained, but infoxication happens just at a time when no action is imperative to optimize limited analog space, given the marginal costs of digital storage or access.

Abstract

Information overload, and more specifically the overload and associated activity due to the large amount of email received and issued in our organizations, affects business productivity, efficiency, creativity and innovation. This article presents a practical experience of improved email management based on the development of guidelines and tools addressed to creating less mail and more quality, and managing personal and departmental inboxes more efficiently. The project’s goals, its implementation through workshops, and the main results achieved are reviewed.
