Abstract

Abstract: This article sets out to show an overview of the interest and the use of «political literature» in current historiography. The author also tries to see how these texts were also popular texts in regular use in the spheres where they circulated, specifically during the 17th century. This period of the early modern era evokes an increasing importance of «public opinion» and the strength of its impact, especially in periods of war. And although that these texts could not be read by everyone, they became well known through other forms of diffusion. The paper describes this by making reference to the instruments of this literature, to the creative authors and, finally, to the people who were the opinion leaders of their day. The text presented here links historiography in general, relating political history to the history of literature and culture, and vice versa.Key words: early modern history, Catalonia, war, literature, politics, first person writings, Europe.

Abstract

El presente artículo se pregunta si existía un cursus honorum virreinal para los nobles en la monarquía hispánica de los siglos XVI y XVII. Para responder a esta interrogante, y tras caracterizar brevemente la monarquía y la institución virreinal, se analizan las trayectorias de los nobles que ocuparon el puesto de virrey en más de un territorio de la monarquía. El objetivo de dicho análisis es averiguar dónde empezaban y culminaban sus respectivas carreras virreinales. Además de la dignidad de los territorios se considera el hecho de que la monarquía necesitaba de ciertas personas en momento de crisis o guerra, por lo que hay que ponderar si el paso de un cargo a otro respondía a dicha necesidad o si simplemente se trató de una promoción o investidura normal, realizada de manera sistemática en el tiempo. Para distinguir estos dos factores se problematiza si el paso de un virreinato a otro constituía una práctica habitual de designación política o si esto, más bien, implicaba situaciones circunstanciales y excepcionales como una guerra o una revuelta.
