Abstract

The character of Circe in El mayor encanto, amor presents, beyond its classical features, a particular conception of violence. An analysis of the phases that punctuate the progression of the play shows the func-tional nature of the violence exerted by the enchantress. This structural quality of the violence could be considered one of the most important aspects of the modernization of the violent female character in which Calderón engages.
