Abstract

This paper focuses on the role of the image as an agent for social transformation. The methodology adopted is a case study: the impact of the photograph of Aylan Kurdi, the three-year-old child drowned off Bodrum in an attempt to escape on a raft full of Syrian migrants. This is one of the most widely seen social photojournalism documents in recent times, and it had a huge impact on social media. The study applies an iconographic, iconological and ethical analysis to reveal the constituent parts of an image with the power for social change. In its main conclusions, this paper describes the potential for easy resignification of the digital graphic image as it symbolically transforms reality, and the power it has to generate processes of pronouncement and activism among citizens in digital environments. The results of the case study show that the value of an image for social change is achieved not only by the magnitude of the tragedy itself and the information that it registers, or by its formal aspects (iconographic), but mainly by being able to express a change of logic (iconological aspects) and to promote processes of reappropriation and denunciation. The ethical debate on dissemination shifts the problem from journalistic ethics to citizen responsibility.

Abstract

Gender Studies have placed a pivotal role in mass media studies in the last decade. Power strategies and the relationship that has been established among different stereotypes in TV are the main object of study of this paper. Gender relations are an essential field of analysis of social relations in the field of mass media studies. There is a need to rethink most of the gender constructions implying power strategies. The aim of this paper is to analyze the power strategies that make gender stereotypes possible in TV.

Abstract

The measures taken to adapt the ContentDm  application to users’ validation requirements are introduced, along with the collections in the Instituto Cervantes  image bank creation project. The project’s general characteristics are then laid out in a presentation. This is followed by a summary of the objectives and strategies inherent within the complex task of implementing a document manager which is suitable for both internal use to meet the needs of an institution’s personnel and for the publishing of images on the internet. Finally, there is an account of the suggestions which have been put into practice to further tailor users’ needs to the digital collection manager’s characteristics.

Abstract

Summary of the historical evolution of document management processes in the Spanish regional newspaper Levante-EMV from its privatization in 1984 to the present. First, it points out the historical stages that have been traditionally identified in print media archives, overlaid with the evolution of Levante-EMV. It then details the methods of document management that have been used in the newspaper archive, from manual document management to the integration of the archive in digital production process.
