Abstract

Spatial evolution in ancient Chinese villages is always one of the most interesting research topics in the field of architectural design, urban planning and history of architecture. Xi-di village exemplifies traditional settlements in ancient China. For many years, numerous researchers have explored its built form, origin and evolution process from different perspectives. This paper attempts to position the spatial evolution process of this village in the context of complex system theory, which views the process of space self-organization as a form of disequilibrium and non-linear development process. Through analyzing the mechanism of village space changes, we develop the dynamic evolution modeling based on the theory of cellular automata. The purpose of the paper is to provide a new perspective for the conventional architectural research of space self-organization.

Abstract

The experiment carried by the author in 2010 is to test if self-organizing systems could be systematically regulated according to the users preference for global behavior. Self-organizing has been appreciated by architects and urban planners for its richness in the emerging global behaviors, however, design and self-organizing are contradictory in principle. It seems that it is inevitable to balance the design and self-organization if self-organization is employed in a design task. There have been approaches combining self-organizing with optimization process in a parallel manner. This experiment strives to regulate a self-organizing system according to non-defined objectives via real-time interaction between the user and the computer. Particularly, cellular automaton is employed as the self-organizing system to model a city district.

Abstract

This paper proposes and validates a modified cellular automata model for determining interaction rate (i.e. number of car-following/overtaking instances) using traffic flow data measured in the field. The proposed model considers lateral position preference by each vehicle type and introduces a position preference parameter β in the model which facilitates gradual drifting towards preferred position on road, even if the gap in front is sufficient. Additionally, the model also improves upon the conventional model by calculating safe front and back gap dynamically based on speed and deceleration properties of leader and follower vehicles. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to determine the effect of β on vehicular interactions and the model was calibrated and validated using interaction rates observed in the field. Paired tests were conducted to determine the validity of the model in determining interaction rates. Results of the simulations show that there is a parabolic relationship between area occupancy and interaction rate of different vehicle types. The model performed satisfactorily as the simulated interaction rate between different vehicle types were found to be statistically similar to those observed in field. Also, as expected, the interaction rate between light motor vehicles (LMVs) and heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) were found to be higher than that between LMVs and three wheelers because LMVs and HMVs share the same lane. This could not be done using conventional CA models as lateral movement rules were dictated by only speeds and gaps. So, in conventional models, the vehicles would end up in positions which are not realistic. The position preference parameter introduced in this model motivates vehicles to stay in their preferred positions. Abstract

We utilized an Adjustable Ring-Mode (ARM) laser to achieve an almost fully equiaxed microstructure in powder bed Fusion-laser beam Scalmalloy®. ARM laser-built specimens exhibited over 90% fine-grained material, while circular laser-built specimens yielded less than 50% fine-grained material, using the same laser power, speed, and hatch spacing. To gain insights into these interesting results, we employed a Cellular Automata (CA) solidification simulation, incorporating the nucleation role of L12 Al3(ScxZr1-x) precipitates through a particle-based nucleation model. The simulation was coupled with the corresponding temperature field derived from finite difference analyses of the circular and ARM laser beams. The simulation results revealed a significantly thicker precipitation zone (equiaxed grains) under the ARM laser compared to the circular beam, primarily attributed to reduced temperature and cooling rates. The excellent correlation between simulation and experimental results demonstrates promising potential for the predictive application of the developed model. It can be effectively utilized to optimize heat source modulation and process parameters, thereby enabling the adaptation of microstructure and mechanical properties

Abstract

Collaborative mapping projects, such as OpenStreetMap (OSM), have received tremendous amounts of contributed data from voluntary participants over time. So far, most research efforts deal with data quality issues, but the OSM evolution across space and over time has not been noted. Therefore, this study is dedicated to the evolution of the contributed information in order to understand an emergent phenomenon of so-called collaborative contributing. The main objective of this paper is to monitor the evolutional pattern of OSM and predict potential future states through a cellular automata (CA) model. This is exceedingly relevant for numerous OSM-based applications. Descriptive spatiotemporal analysis of the contributions for the time period 2007–2012, using the city of Heidelberg (Germany) as a case study, reveals that early contributions are given three years after the launching of OSM, while after nearly six years, most of the areas are discovered. The simulation results for the validated CA model, predicting OSM states for 2014, provide clear evidence that most of the areas have been explored three years after people began mapping until 2010, and thereafter, the densification process has begun and will cover most parts of the city although the amount of contribution depends on the land use types.

Abstract

Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) not only enables the fabrication of metal parts with complex geometries in near-net-shape, but also offers the potential to tailor the microstructure and, consequently, the mechanical properties of the final product. In this contribution, we present our in-house developed simulation software SAMPLE3D (Simulation of Additive Manufacturing on the Powder scale using a Laser or Electron beam in 3D), which is designed specifically for simulating grain structure evolution during PBF processes. The core of SAMPLE3D is composed of a finite difference model and a cellular automaton model. The finite difference model is used to obtain the temperature field caused by an electron or laser beam. This temperature field is further used in the cellular automaton model to simulate grain structure development where grain selection as well as nucleation is considered. A range of information can be extracted from the simulation results, such as texture, grain morphology, and grain boundary arrangement. SAMPLE3D provides a way to get insight into the relationship between PBF process strategies and microstructures. SAMPLE3D has been employed to investigate the texture and grain structure evolution of various materials in different research projects.
