Abstract

The most significant advances of the Bibliographic framework initiative (Bibframe) during 2015 are described, along with the proposal for a new version of the Bibframe vocabulary (Bibframe 2.0 draft specifications), and its impact on the core classes: Item, Title and Authority. Along with this, a synopsis of presentations given about Bibframe in 2015 and early 2016 is provided in order to give an overview of the status and evolution of the projects being generated around this initiative.

Abstract

This article summarizes the main aspects of the evolution of Bibframe in 2017, including the internationalization of the project (which was intensified by the statement of the Committee on Cataloging: Asian and African Materials (CC:AAM) in support of the internationalization of Bibframe, the extension of the model to Europe, and the first real experience carried out by the National Library of Sweden. In addition, projects that aim to test Bibframe in production are also reviewed.

A paradigm shift is taking place in cataloguing codes. After the massive success of simple information retrieval systems like Google, some cataloguers are calling for a simplification of document descriptions. Coyle  and Hillmann  criticize the AACR update because of the excessive weight given to library traditions in the work that is underway.

The article discusses new RDA (Resource description and access) cataloguing rules, which are based on the FRBR and FRAD conceptual model. The basic entities (work, expression, manifestation and item), as well as their attributes and relationships are described, and RDA structure and substantial changes from existing AACR2 rules explained. New terminology, new cataloguing models, and specifically “the rule of three” are included, no abbreviations, annotations of numbers and errors, and use of square brackets. New MARC 21 fields are explained: the 264 field for publisher data and the 3XX field for content, media and carrier types. The paper addresses the application of these changes in cartographic documents, especially in the 255 field for mathematical data elements, containing a sub-field for scale, cartographic projections and coordinates, and in the physical description field, including record samples. The essential role in the RDA development and training of cataloguers for cartographic documents is carried out by an expert group called Magirt (ALA). The rules offer freedom of application for cataloguers and cataloguing agencies; therefore, their interpretation is required, taking into account national cataloguing conventions. The instructions have already been translated into the major world languages.

Abstract

Although many analogic audiovisual archives are still awaiting a digitization project that guarantees their preservation and public access, a massive generation of audiovisual content is taking place, once the source has completed the transition to digital production and distribution. The demand for an increasingly diversified production at TV stations is leading to the need to prioritize image retrieval from the archives for reuse. Efficient alternatives for automatic metadata extraction, indexing and searching are sought, and text information to describe images continues to be necessary. The documentary image processing is extremely costly in human resources, with dedication times of two, three or even more times the length of the treated material. In parallel, part of the audiovisual production is indexed during the production process by people other than archivists, librarians or information scientists. Therefore, a transformation of the traditional tasks carried out by the above mentioned professionals is becoming more evident; on the other hand, these professionals continue to be isolated and less hybridized than expected with other labor profiles.
