Abstract

In regions with an extensive waterway network intermodal transport including inland navigation is a good alternative for unimodal road transport. Intermodal transport networks exhibit an increased complexity due to the inclusion of multiple transport modes, multiple decision makers and multiple types of load units. A discrete event simulation methodology is proposed to understand the network dynamics and analyze policy measures with the intention of stimulating intermodal barge transport. The simulation model allows to quantify a number of network properties resulting from the interaction of freight flows. The intermodal hinterland network of the port of Antwerp serves as the real-world application in this study. Various aspects in the modelling process are discussed and a first potential policy is analysed. Document type: Part of book or chapter of book

Abstract

The potential impacts associated with the transportation of hazardous materials are important to shippers, carriers, and the general public. This is particularly true for shipments of radioactive material. The shippers are primarily concerned with safety, security, efficiency, and equipment requirements. The carriers are concerned with the potential impact that radioactive shipments may have on their operations--particularly if such materials are involved in an accident. The general public has also expressed concerns regarding the safety of transporting radioactive and other hazardous materials through their communities. Because transportation routes are a central concern in hazardous material transport, the prediction of likely routes is the first step toward resolution of these issues. In response to these routing needs, several models have been developed over the past fifteen years at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The HIGHWAY routing model is used to predict routes for truck transportation, the INTERLINE routing model is used to predict both rail and barge routes, and the AIRPORT locator model is used to determine airports with specified criteria near a specific location. As part of the ongoing improvement of the US Department of Energy`s (DOE) Environmental Management Transportation Management Division`s (EM-261) computer systems and development efforts, a Baseline Requirements Assessment Session on the HIGHWAY, INTERLINE, and AIRPORT models was held at ORNL on April 27, 1994. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the existing capabilities of the models and data bases and to review enhancements of the models and data bases to expand their usefulness. The results of the Baseline Requirements Assessment Section will be discussed in this report. The discussions pertaining to the different models are contained in separate sections. Abstract

The typical voyage of a barge transporting maritime containers inland, consists of visiting a set of terminals where loading/unloading operations occur. The required stowage plans must meet stability requirements during all transport phases and avoid costly re-handling operations. In this paper, we formalize this problem and consider a typical dry-port transport system. We propose a comprehensive mathematical model that seeks to maximize stowed containers. To solve it, we develop a hybrid metaheuristic approach, based on local search and an industrial solver. Numerical experiments, based on real-world data, provide insights into the performances of the proposed framework and current stowage practices.
