Abstract

En este artículo se pasa revista a la visión poco halagüeña de la crítica teatral del diecinueve con respecto al teatro calderoniano, la llamada «querella calderoniana». Estas conflictivas relaciones se ejemplifican en el caso concreto de Bretón de los Herreros y su refundición de la comedia calderoniana, Fuego de Dios en el querer bien. In this article, it is analised the reproving perception of the 19th theatrical critic to the theater of Calderón, what is known as «querella calderoniana». These conflictive relationships are illustrated by the example of Bretón de los Herreros, who adapted the calderonian play Fuego de Dios en el querer bien. 

Abstract

Our aim in this article is to make a synthesis of Alfred Morel-Fatio’s main studies on Catalan language and literature, as well as to define his work in 19th century Catalan studies, especially in France, but also in the rest of Europe. It is necessary to know that this French scholar had a leading role in the deployment of Catalan university surveys outside Catalan countries, as well as making significant contributions to the deployment of Catalan philology. So, we conclude that Morel-Fatio has the merit of being the first professor to introduce the study of Catalan language and literature into university. Apart from that, it is important to highlight the influence of its summaries on the history of the Catalan language and literature published in the Grundriss, because they were the main description of this part of Catalan culture available to European Romanists at that century. In addition, they contributed decisively to the development of modern Catalan philology influencing several Catalan philologists.

Abstract

This paper analyses the descriptions of the Catalan language made by travellers who traversed the Catalan Countries and, especially, the Valencian Country during the first third of the 19th century. It is also aimed at examining the linguistic observations and perceptions of these travellers about the Catalan language, especially about its internal unity/diversity, its classification within other Romance languages, and its use by the inhabitants of these territories. The works studied are not only travel books, but also those informative texts that serve travellers to guide and contextualize their itineraries: travel guides and topography and geography works, among others. All these authors come from outside the Catalan-speaking territories: there are Germans, English, French, Scots and Americans who, for different reasons, travelled throughout the Catalan Countries, described this territory and explained —with greater or lesser attention and precision— the language spoken by its inhabitants and its main characteristics.
