Abstract

International audience; This e-book gives an overview of the research work carried out within the framework of the MEDIUM project. Entitled“New pathways for sustainable urban development in China’s medium-sized cities », the MEDIUM project was funded by theEuropean Commission under EuropeAid program, and run for three years (09/2015—08/2018). Its main objective was to trainEuropean young researchers in the knowledge of urban China and to foster Sino-European scientific cooperation on urbandevelopment. Various means have been deployed to this end, including medium-term mobility schemes to conduct research inChina, and by co-organizing a series of scientific events with Chinese universities. Beyond scientific cooperation, the project has developed a pilot experiment: training Chinese students (or university students) to lead stakeholder workshops applied to urban planning, with a view to organizing consultations involving users of a targeted urban area.

Abstract

In an effort to curb air pollution, the city of Delhi (India), known to be one of the most populated, polluted, and congested cities in the world has run a trial experiment in two phases of 15 days intervals. During the experiment, most of four-wheeled vehicles were constrained to move on alternate days based on whether their plate numbers ended with odd or even digits. While the local government of Delhi represented by A. Kejriwal (leader of AAP party) advocated for the benefits of the experiment, the prime minister of India, N. Modi (former leader of BJP) defended the inefficiency of the initiative. This later has led to a strong polarization of public opinion towards OddEven experiment. This real-world urban experiment provided the scientific community with a unique opportunity to study the impact of political leaning on humans perception at a large-scale. We collect data about pollution and traffic congestion to measure the real effectiveness of the experiment. We use Twitter to capture the public discourse about the experiment in order to study people’s opinion within different dimensions: time, location, and topics. Our results reveal a strong influence of political affiliation on how people perceived the outcomes of the experiment. For instance, AAP supporters were significantly more enthusiastic about the success of OddEven compared to BJP supporters. However, taking into account location of people revealed that personal experience is able to overcome political bias.

Abstract

International audience; Purpose.The paper studies the progressive occupancy of parking capacity along the street by candidate users, under the user equilibrium paradigm. The situation depicted typically applies to a parking peak period.Methods.In our model, the parking supply is made up of capacitated lots situated along a spatial axis, while the demand is disaggregated continuously in both destination place and preferred time of arrival. Each user selects a parking lot and time from among options on the basis of their trade-offs between walking, driving, parking price and schedule delay. Efficient algorithms are developed and an application instance is dealt with in detail.Results.The dynamical equilibrium pattern exhibits parking lots “efficiency regions” in the plane of destination places and preferred arrival times. These efficiency regions are dynamic market areas with strong yet simple structural characteristics, making it easy to assign each parking user to his preferred option and to derive the lot saturation times. The latter are identified as the key state variables for the parking system, since they induce the lot efficiency regions. The equilibrium state is characterized as the solution to a fixed-point problem with respect to the saturation times.Conclusion.Our model improves upon previous parking models in economic theory, by adopting a higher resolution in space and time on both supply and demand side. The higher resolution is enabled by focusing on the street level, thus restricting the outreach of the model. Further research may be directed to extend the model to a network of streets, on the side of traffic assignment, and to study parking management policies, on the side of parking economics. Abstract

International audience; Purpose : The focus of this paper is to enhance our observation and knowledge of interurban road freight transport. It explores some possibilities for improving roadside freight surveys, usually used to gather origin-destination data. Methodology : To achieve this, new questions are added to a standard roadside survey form, and the enhanced survey form is tested through two surveys. The new questions relate to currently unobserved variables: the vehicle volume occupied by freight; the method of organisation (double crew, relays) used by the carriers; the existence of speci c logistical imperatives; and drivers' compulsory breaks. Results : The questions on volume constraint and carrier organisation prove to be the most informative. These two questions are thus two promising areas for improvement in roadside freight surveys. The questions about speci c logistical imperatives and driver breaks prove less fruitful. Conclusion : The paper concludes that it is possible, through minor modi cations in data collection protocols, to signi cantly enhance observation quality in road freight transport activity.

Abstract

International audience; Shared autonomous vehicles are considered to have a transformative impact on future urban transportation and especially Shared Mobility. In order to assess the transport-related impact of this new mode, various models and simulations are under development. The majority of recently proposed simulations are based on activity-based multi-agent approaches. Thanks to the disaggregated level of data in multi-agent simulation, the traveler decision making mechanisms might be individualized according the attributes. In this paper we try to take in advantage of this granularity in order to explore the impact of user preferences on the modal split of shared autonomous vehicles. To illustrate the proposed methodology the transport system of Paris is simulated by using an activity-based multi-agent tool called MATSim. The traveler preferences toward shared autonomous vehicles use are also summarized based on the literature review. Document type: Conference object
