Abstract

The ocean, the origin of life, the total area of about 360 million square kilometers, accounting for 71% of the Earth\\'s surface area. Ocean Freight has become the world\\'s most important import and export trade mode of transport. Our daily life is also closely linked with the ocean, the ocean food, marine-related products. It can be said that the ocean has become the most important part of people\\'s life around the world. However, the current situation of marine environment is not optimistic, marine pollution has become a very important topic in today\\'s society. The oil spill incident; the oil Leakage incident; or the chemical incident. All of these marine pollution incidents have caused significant and difficult recovery of the marine environment. So, how do we prevent and control the occurrence of these marine pollutions? How to restore and manage contaminated waters? This article we will focus on several major marine pollution incidents in the history of the world to discuss and analyze the pollution of the world\\'s oceans, how to prevent and control marine pollution, and how to treat the polluted oceans.

Abstract

The main objective is to determinate the feasibility of Dual-Fuel retrofitting for engines present in Short Sea Shipping vessels. To accomplish this main objective there are other secondary objectives: - Integrate future environmental regulations to this paper forcing its achievement in this study - Determinate present day technologies capable to accomplish environmental regulations - Definition of shipping routes to study the proposed viability - Determinate the study vessel to obtain its measurements - Study Dual-Fuel, and other main engine types - Study Dual-Fuel and Scrubber System vessel’s retrofitting - Review of bunkering prices to do comparisons and to create different future scenarios according to the possible price evolution

Abstract

This paper identifies weaknesses and opportunities in current Ecobono formulas (ecological bonus given to Short Sea Shipping users due to maritime transport lower externalities) using a SWOT analysis and presents an alternative European Ecobono. Among major findings we reached are the facts that weaknesses produced or inherent to current formulas as unfair competition between road carriers and budget limitation for the enforcement would be eliminated in case of applying a European alternative. The conclusion derived from the study brings out the idea that it is not possible to achieve collective European objectives by means of measures applied by individual member states.

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s13437-018-0143-6 This contribution investigates the economic benefits of using weather ship routing on Short Sea Shipping (SSS) activities. The investigation is supported with the development of a ship routing system based on pathfinding algorithm, the parametrization of the wave effect on navigation, and the use of high-resolution meteo-oceanographic predictions. The optimal ship routing analysis is investigated in a European SSS system: the link between Spanish and Italian ports. The results show the economic benefits using ship routing in SSS during energetic wave episodes. The rate of cost savings may reach 18% of the total costs under particular bad weather conditions in the navigation area. The work establishes the basis of further developments in optimal route applied in relatively short distances and its systematic use in the SSS maritime industry. Peer Reviewed Document type: Article
