Abstract

[EN] Increasing power consumption and CO2 emissions generated by large data networks have become a major concern over the last decade. For this problem, the emerging paradigm of Software-Defined Networks (SDN) can be seen as an attractive solution. In these networks an energy-aware routing model could be easily implemented leveraging the control and data plane separation. This paper investigates the impact of energy-aware routing on SDN performance. To that end, we propose a novel energy- aware mechanism that reduces the number of active links in SDN with multiple controllers, considering in-band control traffic, i.e. links are shared between data and control plane traffic. The proposed strategy exploits knowledge of the network topology combined with traffic engineering techniques to reduce the overall power consumption. Therefore, two heuristic algorithms are designed: a static network configuration and a dynamic energy-aware routing. Significant values of switched-off links are reached in the simulations using real topologies and demands data. Moreover, obtained results confirm that crucial network parameters such as control traffic delay, data path latency, link utilization and TCAM occupation are affected by the performance-agnostic energy-aware model. PildoLabs is developing a UTM system to coordinate manned and unmanned aircraft operations for emergency operations. This project describes an implementation of the third connection scheme described by the Low Voltage Regulation for the charging of electric vehicles in community parkings. This scheme allows to reduce installation and maintenance costs since all users share the installation and electric connection. Although, the fact that these types of installations currently follow the first scheme of this regulation, where each user performs an individual installation from the electric connection of his house, it is expected that in the near future these types of facilities will be prohibited and the trend is an installation as proposed. The proposed project is not only a novelty in that there are none similarly in the market, but also represents a challenge for the application of new technologies where a set of users must share and manage resources using communications networks, databases and control algorithms for the efficient management of the installation and the contracted power. The design has not been limited to the programming of these functions but has also been necessary in the design and implementation of the hardware of the charging stations following the restrictions of the current legislation.

Abstract

Free route airspace permits users to freely plan a route between defined entry and exit waypoints, with the possibility of routing via intermediate points. Flights flying in a free route area remain subject to air traffic control (ATC) for separation provision. This research evaluates an extreme future scenario of free route implementation across Europe. We consider the complete upper airspace of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) area as a unique airspace block configured with free route. The paper is centered in investigating the benefits for the airspace users, and in the study of possible increments of complexity of such configuration. In this research, fast time simulations are carrying out to discover how much flight time, fuel and distance aircraft can save with this free route configuration. In the other side, the paper explains the evolution of conflicts derived from potential separation losses between aircraft in this new environment. Separation losses in free route can emerge at any point of the airspace, which can require greater effort for solving them in comparison with fixed airways configuration, where conflicts are usually found in well-known airways intersections. The airspace configurations modelled in this study are the fixed airways structure, named as Current, and the future scenario, named as EUROFRA, where new navigation points are added. hieving energy efficiency has recently become an essential aim of networking research due to the ever increasing power consumption and CO2 emissions generated by large data networks. For this problem, the emerging paradigm of Software-Defined Networks (SDN) can be seen as an attractive solution. In these networks an energy-aware routing model could be easily implemented leveraging the control and data plane separation. This paper addresses the problem of optimizing the power consumption in SDN using an energy-aware traffic engineering approach that minimizes the number of links that can be used to satisfy a given traffic demand. Different from previous works, we focus on optimizing energy consumption in OpenFlow networks with in-band control traffic. Our approach also considers performance constraints that are crucial in the correct operation of SDN, such as bounded delay for the control plane traffic and load balance between controllers. First, we present a complete formulation of the optimization problem involving the routing requirements for control and data plane communications. To reduce the time complexity of our model in large-scale topologies we derive a heuristic algorithm. We present the TOTEM open source Traffic Engineering (TE) toolbox and a set of TE methods that we have designed and/or integrated. These methods cover intra-domain and inter-domain TE, IP-based and MPLS-based TE. They are suitable for network optimisation, better routing of traffic for providing QoS, load balancing, protection and restoration in case of failure, etc. The toolbox is designed to be deployed as an on-line tool in an operational network, or used off-line as an optimisation tool or as a traffic engineering simulator. FLOR will redefine the paradigms under which remote pilots and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems have been designed and operated during the last decades; i.e. a dedicated crew manages a single aircraft, indistinctive from being the latter manned or unmanned. Most of the existing and ongoing investigations related to the insertion of RPAS into air traffic have addressed the impact of operating a single aircraft. However, it has never been considered the advantatges of operating of a fleet of RPAS managed within a dedicated ground facility involving a specialised team of remote pilots. Currently, only the military applies RPAS in a large scale, and although in that specific environment the pressure to reduce operational costs is increasingly high, nevertheless the armed services do not have to face the pressure of an open market. FLOR intends to investigate the requirements for a new generation of RPAS systems that support a revolutionary operational paradigm: each pilot operates multiple RPAS in a certain phase of flight; pilots transfer the flight responsavility as the RPAS operation progresses. FLOR improves the way in which RPAS operators employ both aircraft and remote pilots, especially in terms of economic efficiency and safety. The improvements will come from multiple sources, such as a better exploitation of the vehicle availability as it will not be limited to the capabilities or duty time of a single crew. Further improvements are a more advantageous use of personnel resources. Each individual can be allocated to a certain tasks that better fit his competences and capabilities and those tasks may be adjusted dynamically over time. Pilots may supervise multiple RPAs during the extensive and uneventful cruise portions of flights, while may focus on individual vehicles to manage the critical parts of the flight, or to respond to emergency/abnormal situations. The ground based flight control of the aircraft fleet is improved by centralizing the RPAS piloting in a small network of highly capable infrastructures which will guarantee the desired levels of certification, fault-tolerance, and service continuity. Finally, from a safety perspective, the possibility of transferring the control of the RPAS for a change of pilot or to another piloting centre in case of need, will allow an unprecedented extra safety measure. The FLOR concept will prove effective for extensive commercial point-to-point cargo operations, but also when conducting surveillance operations, e.g. disaster monitoring with a fleet of MALE/HALE RPAS or operating a fleet of solar powered RPAS slowly loitering at extremely high altitude. This issue is often addressed as some of the most feasible deployment of RPAS, as those operations might be dangerous or exhausting for pilots in manned aircraft. Within the most recent European Commissions update of the Aviation Strategy for Europe the huge potential of drones in the sense of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) is highlighted. EC is asking for R&D in reducing risks associated to UAS. In addition EC sees the need for improving related technologies and operations to unleash their full market potential. FLOR paves the way for the efficient application of UAS operated as RPAS with respect to their fleet management and control. Peer Reviewed
