Abstract

The automotive industry currently faces four megatrends which are challenging the competitive environment: Connectivity, Autonomous Driving, Shared Services and Electric Vehicles. On top of that, aftermaths from the Diesel scandal are still noticeable. Therefore, the objective of this work was to find whether the Diesel scandal has an influence on the development of Electric Vehicles of traditional car manufacturers among the other trends. First, consumers were asked to fill out a survey on the attractiveness of and their attention to-wards Electric Vehicles before and after the scandal. It was concluded that EV demand didn’t change because of the Diesel scandal, even though the attention of consumers increased. A main reason therefore is the dependency of EV demand on financial incentives rather than en-vironmental concerns. Second, to measure the impact on EV development, selected employees from traditional car manufacturers were interviewed and the results were discussed with an industry expert. After collecting the drivers behind Electric Vehicle development, an indirect influence on EV devel-opment was revealed. To meet environmental targets set by governments or political unions, OEMs must focus on new technologies due to the lack of Diesel car sales. When establishing a connection between the research findings and literature, the dynamic ca-pabilities framework was not found to be applicable as the development and adaptation of Elec-tric Vehicles is mainly dependent from external surroundings. Thus, Industrial Organization as underlying theory was found to be suitable. A indústria automóvel enfrenta atualmente quatro macrotendências que desafiam a envolvente competitiva: Conectividade, Direção Autónoma, Serviços Partilhados e Veículos Elétricos. Além disso, os resultados do escândalo “Diesel” ainda são visíveis. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descobrir se o escândalo “Diesel” tem influência no desenvolvimento de veículos eléctricos de fabricantes dentro da indústria tradicional automóvel, entre outras tendências. Em primeiro lugar, foi pedido aos consumidores que preenchessem um questionário sobre a atratividade e a atenção destes para com os veículos elétricos antes e depois do escândalo. Concluiu-se que a procura de veículos elétricos não mudou devido ao escândalo “Diesel”, embora a atenção dos consumidores tenha aumentado. Uma das principais razões, portanto, é a dependência de veículos elétricos de incentivos financeiros, em vez de preocupações ambientais. Em segundo lugar, para medir o impacto no desenvolvimento de veículos elétricos, foram entrevistados funcionários, seleccionados de fabricantes de automóveis tradicionais, e os resultados foram discutidos com um especialista do setor. Depois de recolher os drivers por detrás do desenvolvimento do Veículo Elétrico, uma influência indireta no desenvolvimento de VE foi revelada. Para atingir as metas ambientais estabelecidas pelos governos ou sindicatos políticos, os OEMs devem-se focar em novas tecnologias devido à falta de vendas de carros a “Diesel”. Ao estabelecer uma conexão entre os resultados da pesquisa e a literatura, a tese das capacidades dinâmicas não se mostrou aplicável ao desenvolvimento e adaptação de veículos elétricos. Assim, a Organização Industrial como teoria subjacente foi considerada adequada.

Abstract

utomated driving depicts a disruptive technology in the automotive sector. LinkedIn (LI) constitutes herby the social media platform, which connects experts from all over the globe. Experts are active via the LinkedIn feed and within expert groups, however, engagement with the content can be described as low. This thesis aims to investigate this issue, by analysing factors which lead to engagement with Content Marketing initiatives amongst professionals on LI. Engagement factors are divided into the four categories: motivational factors to engage (1), measured with Baldus’ et al. (2014) scale, characteristics of a post (2), the influence of the topic (3) and the format (4) on engagement. Those factors are examined within three subgroups, users solely reading the headlines (1), users consuming the content (2) and users engaging with the content (3). A survey administered on LinkedIn leads to the findings, that professionals are predominantly interested in pure exchange of high quality information and that the engagement increases with the time the professional is in the field and with proximity to the actual research. Those users are best targeted in LI groups. Societal topics, such as ethics have a subordinate effect on engagement. Previous interactions (likes, comments and shares) with the content do not have an impact on the user’s engagement. Professionals utilize a diverse plethora of knowledge sources, where LI constitutes a supplementary online source, which can easily be exchanged. Therefore, the marketer has the obligation to provide timely and relevant content in order to avoid redundancy and stay competitive.

Abstract

Carsharing is a service that allows the rental of a car to the minute, providing more flexibility to the user. This service appeared in 1948 in Switzerland but it has been growing due to the awareness of Shared Mobility. Carsharing concept has been approached by several researchers. However, there is not so much literature about Portuguese market. The impacts of carsharing are known to be the reduction of C02 emissions since it contributes to the reduction of the number of cars parked and in circulation in the big cities (1), the inclusion of all fixed costs in the final price, as the user only pays the miles he drives (2) and the flexibility carsharing gives the users to move around in the city (3). This study’s goal is to understand the Portuguese perception of carsharing use, taking into account benefits such as convenience, environmental impact and costs considerations. It is also crucial to understand the level of service knowledge among Portuguese people, since this factor can influence the perception and a possible intention to use it. It turns out that most of the Portuguese know what carsharing is but do not know very well how it works. In general, the Portuguese people, whether users or non-users, do not see carsharing as a cheap service, but consider the service convenient. As far as environmental impact is concerned, attitudes differ. Users have a positive attitude regarding carsharing impact on the environment, while non-users have a negative attitude. This perception impacts on the attitude of users and non-users. While the former has a positive attitude towards the use of carsharing, the same cannot be concluded from the latter. Most users intend to continue to use carsharing, unlike most non-users who do not want to try the service. O carsharing é um serviço que permite o aluguer de um carro ao minuto, proporcionando mais flexibilidade ao utilizador. Este serviço apareceu pela primeira vez em 1948 na Suíça e tem vindo a crescer devido à popularidade do fenómeno da Mobilidade Partilhada. O carsharing tem sido um conceito muito abordado por investigadores estrangeiros, nunca tendo sido muito investigado em Portugal. Os impactos do carsharing são conhecidos por ser a redução de emissões de C02 uma vez que contribui para a diminuição do número de carros estacionados e em circulação nas grandes cidades (1), a não inclusão de custos fixos que a utilização de carro próprio acarreta no preço final- o utilizador só paga os quilómetros que conduz (2) e a flexibilidade que dá aos utilizadores para se movimentarem na cidade (3). Este estudo tem como objetivo perceber qual é a perceção dos portuguese face à utilização do carsharing, tendo em conta benefícios como a conveniência, o impacto ambiental e fatores económicos. Torna-se crucial perceber também o nível de conhecimento do serviço por parte dos portugueses, uma vez que este fator pode influenciar a perceção e uma possível intenção de utilização do mesmo. Conclui-se que a maior parte dos portugueses sabe o que é carsharing mas não sabe muito bem como funciona. Em geral, os portugueses, quer utilizadores quer não utilizadores, não veem o carsharing como um serviço barato, mas consideram o serviço conveniente. No que diz respeito ao impacto ambiental, as atitudes divergem. Os utilizadores têm uma atitude positiva quanto ao impacto do carsharing no ambiente, enquanto os não utilizadores têm uma atitude negativa. Esta perceção impacta na atitude dos utilizadores e não utilizadores. Enquanto que os primeiros têm uma atitude positiva face à utilização de carsharing, já não se pode concluir o mesmo dos segundos. Na sua maioria os utilizadores pretendem continuar a utilizar carsharing, ao contrário da maioria dos não utilizadores que não pretende experimentar o serviço.

Abstract

The project developed for Mobiletric was conducted to improve one of their core business, ProStations, which is a network of electric vehicles charging stations hubs with exclusive access for professionals. The goal was to find the factors affecting the optimal locations for their new charging stations hubs. Mobiletric plans to be the market leader of this segment that is expected to increase exponentially from 2025 onward when the three major barriers for electric vehicles are overcome – price, range, and charging infrastructure. During the project, interviews were conducted to major players in the electric mobility industry with the purpose of better understanding the current dynamics of the market and questionnaires were conducted to potential clients – electric vehicles drivers. We found out that the optimal location for new fast-charging stations in Lisbon is close to main roads and usual routes, like home-work route or TVDE drivers usual working routes. When compared with the distance to the center (Terreiro do Paço), those charging stations should be located in the peripheries of the city, with a distance, on average, between 4,5 kilometers and 5,5 kilometers to that center. However, drivers value more the charging station being available than its location (availability over location) and are not price-sensitive due to the lack of fast-charging infrastructure in the city. O projeto desenvolvido para a Mobiletric foi realizado para melhorar uma das suas atividades principais, as ProStation, uma rede de estações de recarga para veículos elétricos com acesso exclusivo para profissionais. O objetivo foi encontrar os fatores que afetam as localizações ideais para os seus novos hubs de estações de carregamento. A Mobiletric pretende ser a líder de mercado deste segmento, que deve aumentar exponencialmente a partir de 2025, quando as três principais barreiras para os veículos elétricos forem superadas - preço, alcance e infraestrutura de carregamento. Durante o projeto foram feitas entrevistas aos principais intervenientes na indústria da mobilidade elétrica com o objetivo de entender melhor a dinâmica atual do mercado e forem feitos questionários a potenciais clientes - utilizadores de veículos elétricos. Descobrimos que a localização ideal para as novas estações de carregamento rápido em Lisboa seria perto de estradas principais e de rotas habituais, como a rota casa-trabalho ou as rotas de trabalho habituais dos condutores TVDE. Quando comparadas com o centro da cidade (Terreiro do Paço), essas estações de carregamento devem ficar situadas na periferia da cidade, a uma distância, em média, entre 4,5 quilómetros e 5,5 quilómetros desse centro. No entanto, os motoristas valorizam mais a disponibilidade das estações de carregamento que a sua localização (disponibilidade sobre a localização) e não são sensíveis ao preço devido à falta de infraestrutura de carregamento rápido na cidade.

Abstract

The mobility market has constantly been exposed to innovation, and shared mobility solutions are becoming increasingly viable. The new offer of shared electric scooters has joined current offers such as bike-sharing or car-sharing, and quickly spread throughout the city of Lisbon, with a growing number of companies entering the market. This study aims to understand how this new mobility offer is being addressed in Lisbon, providing an overview of the service through the identification of the main characteristics of the users, the main drivers for using the service and the main barriers that may exist. Two methodologies were used - semi-structured interviews (12 participants) and an online survey (127 participants). The results show that the service seems to be more attractive to young adults, digital economy participants, people who value innovation and sustainability when choosing a mode of transport, and people who seek to save time on travel. The service is also considered enjoyable and as a way to spend pleasant moments. It is seen mostly as a way of complementing other means of transport and for short distances and not as a primary mode of transport. Being the main barriers: the price, since people consider that the service becomes expensive if it is used on a regular basis, the city's infrastructures, which people consider are not completely prepared for the effective use of the service, and the lack control of inappropriate parking of the scooters, causing dissatisfaction to users and non-users. O mercado da mobilidade tem sido constantemente exposto a inovação e as soluções de mobilidade partilhada estão a tornar-se cada vez mais viáveis. A nova oferta de trotinetes elétricas partilhadas juntou-se a ofertas já existentes como bike-sharing ou car-sharing, e rapidamente espalhou-se por Lisboa, com um número crescente de empresas a entrar no mercado. O objetivo deste estudo é perceber de que forma esta nova oferta de mobilidade está a ser abordada em Lisboa, fornecendo uma visão geral do serviço através da identificação das principais caraterísticas dos utilizadores, dos fatores que impulsionam a utilização e das principais barreiras que podem existir. Para tal, foram utilizadas duas metodologias – entrevistas semiestruturadas (12 participantes) e um questionário online (127 participantes). Os resultados revelam que o serviço parece ser especialmente atrativo para jovens adultos, participantes da economia digital, pessoas que valorizam inovação e sustentabilidade num meio de transporte e pessoas com procuram poupar tempo. O serviço é também considerado divertido e como uma forma de passar momentos agradáveis. É visto essencialmente como uma forma de complementar outros meios de transporte e para curtas distâncias e não como um meio de transporte principal. Sendo as principais barreiras: o preço, uma vez que as pessoas consideram que o serviço se torna caro se for usado de forma recorrente, as infraestruturas da cidade, que as pessoas consideram que não estão completamente preparadas para o uso efetivo do serviço, e a falta de controlo no estacionamento inapropriado das trotinetes, que provoca descontentamento a utilizadores e não utilizadores.

Abstract

While the electric vehicle market is growing more than ever, it is expected to slow down in the 2030s due to one major issue that is capable of decelerating its current strong growth and expansion – charging infrastructure constraints. They arise due to the fact that the existing electricity grid will not be able to accommodate the increasing demand in high density areas where charging opportunities are limited and the number of electric vehicles high. mov.e has created a digital sharing platform, that provides the base for the first collective electric vehicle charging system, and is connected to its IoT smart plugs, which simply replace existing standard sockets. After having been able to work on its idea with industry experts as part of an intensive 10-week incubation program in Silicon Valley, the team behind mov.e has not only received enough positive feedback that its solution is in high demand and technically proving its potential to speed up the electric mobility revolution, but has also decided on the business model behind its idea. It is now at the stage of finalizing its prototype. Until then, mov.e needs to figure out how it can best penetrate the market and how it can effectively deliver its solution to the end customer to eventually disrupt the way of charging electric vehicles and to provide the ground for an electric vehicle full-scale adoption for the years ahead.

Abstract

The progress of the global agenda for sustainable development, as well as increased concerns over climate change and global resource storage, are in the centre of this century discussions and concerns. Such concerns foster the demand for electric vehicles as these contribute to a more sustainable transportation system by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The present dissertation aims to study online communities of electric vehicles enthusiasts, understanding their attitudes, behaviours and opinions towards electric vehicles purchase intentions. Hence, netnography is considered the most appropriate qualitative research method to conduct this research. Results demonstrate that electric vehicles purchase intentions are affected by the consumers weighting of drivers, barriers, and mostly, perceived self-image. Further, this research shows that purchase intentions of electric vehicles are highly motivated by social influence. This study contributes to current academic discussion on the influential factors of this technology diffusion, unveiling interesting findings regarding the pre-eminence of perceived self-image and vehicle performance over environmental concerns, on purchase intentions. The desired change of behaviours and attitudes towards a more sustainable lifestyle, should be enticed at a societal level through Social Marketing. Governments should promote a more sustainable behaviour on the transportation paradigm by investing in the development of charging infrastructures and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles through stricter policies and incentives. Conspicuously, companies should leverage on governments actions and policies by advocating the futuristic and innovative technology, enhancing consumers perceived self-image to hasten electric vehicles diffusion O progresso da agenda global para o desenvolvimento sustentável e o armazenamento de recursos globais, estão no centro das discussões e preocupações deste século. Estas preocupações estão a fomentar a procura de veículos elétricos, uma vez que estes favorecem a redução de emissões de gases com efeito estufa e contribuem para um sistema de transporte mais sustentável. A presente dissertação visa, por isso, analisar comunidades online de entusiastas de veículos elétricos e compreender as suas atitudes, comportamentos e opiniões em relação às intenções de compra de veículos elétricos. Deste modo, netnografia é considerado o método de investigação qualitativo mais adequado para esta investigação. Os resultados demonstram que as intenções de compra de veículos elétricos são afetadas pela forma como os consumidores avaliam motivações, barreiras e percecionam autoimagem. Adicionalmente, as intenções de compra são fortemente motivadas pela influência social. Este estudo contribui para a atual discussão académica sobre os fatores influentes na difusão desta tecnologia, revelando a preeminência da perceção da autoimagem e do desempenho dos veículos em detrimento de preocupações ambientais na intenção de compra. A desejada mudança de comportamentos e atitudes para um estilo de vida mais sustentável deve ser fomentada através do Marketing Social. Os governos devem promover um comportamento mais sustentável no sistema de transporte, promovendo a adoção de veículos elétricos e investindo no desenvolvimento de infraestruturas de carregamento. Seguidamente, as empresas devem aproveitar as ações e políticas dos governos, promovendo tecnologia futurista e inovadora, potenciando a autoimagem dos consumidores para acelerar a difusão de veículos elétricos.

Abstract

This Work Project presents a case study to be used in masters and executive education Strategy courses to better illustrate the dynamics of competition in markets with demand-side increasing returns. Through the real case of Tesla, this project intends to evaluate the strategic decisions pursued by the firm in the nascent electric vehicle market to overcome the hurdle of critical mass and provide a platform on which e-mobility can realize its full potential. In the analysis that follows, we conclude that Tesla created a model that exceeds the conventional auto business to allow its vehicles to move along the technology adoption curve.

Abstract

Shared mobility, including ride-hailing services, has been on the rise, enabled by emerging technologies, and allowing for more convenient and flexible travel. The Chinese market is particularly attractive for ride-hailing as the country pushes to relieve its transportation problems, namely traffic congestion and subjacent economic implications. This study aims to measure the impact of ride-hailing services on BYD’s share price performance. Three different scenarios of disruption were analyzed, quantifying the potential decrease in revenues. Moreover, an alternative view was considered, taking into consideration the depreciation suffered by society as a whole and the rate of substitution of vehicles.
